I've been asked this same question over and over again..... Which will you go for between the Dot Com and Dot Net domain extensions? What do you really think is the major difference between the two apart from Dot Com being more popular, is there any other Advantage over the Dot Net? Your responses will be much appreciated.
#dot #net

I agree with what everyone is saying here but for me, i think there are no much advantage of dot com over the dot net except that its more popular.

Besides, some of the gurus like Darren Rowse are using the dot net and they are still popular.

My point is, if you can't find the dot com extension, then dot net is a good alternative.

The .net part can be difficult for many people to remember, so you will lose some business by way of potential customers doing a search in vain.

From a personal viewpoint I would recommend spending some time to find a suitable .com address, even if it means changing your original choice of name slightly. Well worth it in the long run.

What if you were unable to find a dot com, what will you do then?

I really don't get why so many people are against .net. Sure .com is always better but there are so many big business that use .net and they're still fine. I wouldn't recommend changing the domain ( if it's a really good one) just because .com isn't available.

most people remember the dot com when you are telling them and then they are supposed to go home and type it in.

If you are sending traffic via a solo ad or PPC etc., it should not matter as it will direct there anyways.

.com > .net -- It makes you look more commercialized, and professional. However if the keyword you are targeting only has .net domains, then go for it.

I find that ranking them is fairly similar in difficulty. The only time a .com comes in handy is when you are looking for the memorability piece for your site.

      This

If your only concern is something you are driving traffic to, then .net is fine.

If you are looking for long term branding, and ease of use (ie. there is a .com button on my ipod but not a .net) then grab a .com.

There is no SEO difference between .net and .com there is more often than not no price difference these days as well so in general i would say go .com.

But I only say this because of the 20 years of branding which ".com" has had. .com has a slight edge over the other extensions with public opinion due to this. The only exceptions really being .org generally being used for profit free organizations and of course .gov and .edu being government and high education.

  • There's no difference between dot com and dot net as far as page ranking purposes go but dot com has been ingrained in people's minds for so long that it gives the perception of more authority, even if it's not always justified.

As Jill said, if you are only looking at driving traffic via ppc, searches etc then it won't make much difference, but if you're building a brand name that you want people to remember then I would go with dot com wherever possible.

I think that most individuals will remember a .com more easily than a .net.

A dot net should just be a second option. Put all your efforts on trying to secure a dot com domain before you give up and move to dot net.

It's not a bad idea to try and look for abandoned domain names. Focusing on how to be really creative and not hurrying the process, it is quite possible to secure a reasonably good dot com domain. You can be sure that it will be well worth the extra effort and time you put into it. More so when you begin to seek traffic. In case, you just cannot get a dot com domain, a dot net one is a good second choice.

  • Dot Com is wired into our minds when it comes to domain names, thus they're easier to remember.

I agree. .com has more of a "normality" for standard users. .net is fine as well.. As far as ranking goes, .com or .net does not matter. Its more about content and providing value to the webuser.

Most people don't even bother with .net any longer. Neither does Google relative to .com. It should be .com or .co

If you're promoting offline, or branding then .com. Otherwise no difference between .com or .net. Although .com would be choice due to tradition and image.
