KEI VS Other keyword difficulty methods

I was just wondering what everyone's opinion is on this.

When it comes to deciding how difficult it will be to rank for a keyword I usually use a tool like SEOforFirefox or SEOQUAKE and make a judgment myself.

I know there are other methods like KEI and Money Word Matrix which focus on an exact search for competitors but I haven't found these successful. As far as I'm concerned it doesn't matter how many people come up for the phrase 'blue widgets', but how well optimised the first page and especially number one result is/are.

That's my take on it anyway. Just wondering what everyone else's opinion was as doing it this way is quite time-consuming esp. compared to a formula.

    You might want to check out this recent article that I published on keyword difficulty. I've had similar issues with finding good tools to determine how difficult it would be to rank for a keyword.

    First, i THINK this is another post which belongs in the PPC/SEO section, and earlier i already saw some mod going gaga moving many threads. WE HAVE A SEO FORUM, REALLY!

    Secondly, the old KEI (as far as i understand) is very outdated and not really reliable (anymore)...this includes other factors like "competing sites" which BASICALLY dont mean anything.

    You could really ignore all those numbers you get back from your keyword software and ONLY look at the top 10 sites, examine their PR, age, back links..this is the REAL competition. Even if your keyword has the greatest "KEI" and only 20 competing sites...what if you are up against 10 really strong contenders with PR6 and up?

    From that point of view...values like KEI or "competing sites" etc. are actually more misleading than they help.
