Need some pointers for an authority site

I want to start an authority site/blog that has to do with a service people use. The service providers are about the same each state just different regulations etc.. But the work and everything is the same. I can easily target my state but the content could be universal state wise.

Should I stick to my state or go nationwide..?

Also how would I start something like this as in Seo wise...? Because people usually search there state followed by the service when looking for a service provider. Example: Miami "service name" Los Angeles "service name" etc because people usually search state specific for the service how would I make it nationwide?

I can write a lot of content on this topic I been in the industry for a long time and am very educated on the topic.so can do articles guides the whole package.

Any advise or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

State specific would probably bring in more targeted traffic, and produce more commissions/sales.

It really depends on your budget.
If you've large budget (to buy content, etc.) then the nation-wide authority site option is the way to go.
Otherwise, start with a narrow, state-wide reach by building state-specific site.

Do you think the domain should include the state...also the articles have the state + service keyword inserted into the articles...

        Thanks btw for the response.
