Free methods normally take time to get good amount traffic to a website. Anyway, posting on related forums will help get some orders. Keeping the posts to the point and being helpful will help. Try free press release service to get news about your service to potential viewers. Use social bookmarking and social media marketing. Create pages/profile and make posts on related pages and keep your audience engaged. Google adwords is not free, but I think it might be some help for a site such as yours

do a search on google for...

    <keyword> "powered by vbulletin"

to find all the forums you need

You may also want to check out a tool called "no hands seo" its impressive.

Can you upload descriptions or PAD files to software review sites too?

and get reviews of your scripts on various review sites?

    Hope that helps.

What problem/need do your scripts fix/solve?
Make a list of the problems your products solve, then find where people are searching for those things.

Do KW research on the list of problems you compile, and create and promote content accordingly.

Use your own site analytics. Of the sales you have received, from where did they come? optimize your site for these things.

Join social groups, forums, etc. where people who need your services congregate.

Do a search of this forum for "free traffic" and read on.

I would definitely try a Press Release introducing your website/script! You don't even have to stretch somewhat non-news into valuable news - perfect timing. I was pleasantly surpised with OnlinePRNews the last PR I sent out. It was quite a bit cheaper than the "big guys" and the PR got picked up by enough places to get quite a few links out of the deal - which will help your site long term.

I agree with the others who've said most everything will take time if you're talking free. For sure do the Facebook/Twitter thing - you've already mentioned that so I assume you're already doing that to some degree...

What I would do if I were you is hone in on your niche to get traffic. If you want "quick" traffic, you can get it from other established sources assuming your script is of some value to them and their readers/users! Try "knocking on doors" and emailing the owners of some sites in your niche and see if they can promote your product. If it's not a competing product and it adds value, you may just have some very good results doing this. It's really amazing what some people will do for you for free if YOU JUST ASK!

Another idea is to do a Google search for your biggest keyword. Then, take the top 20-30 and use Bing's Site Explorer tool. Get a nice, long list of places where they're getting their links and see if there's any opportunity for you at those places.

Also, as you said you're selling a new script, I would check out websites that list scripts - I've never sold scripts before, but I'd have to imagine there are quite a few sites that list online scripts for sale! You may find quite a few places where you'll get a solid link for free and maybe some of that traffic you're after.

Last of all, I would just suggest that while you're trying to get traffic, think of links that will help you long term and vice versa. If you do things right, you'll get traffic and you'll be helping the long term value of your site!

      Good luck!

Find problems related to your niche and offer pieces of the solution in the form of how-to videos. At the end of the video tell them to get the rest of the content hit the link below and lead them to your squeeze page or even your sales page...

Depends what your funnel looks like.

There are so many things you could do. Promote your site on forums. Write a wiki about your site or how your site solves a problem. Press releases, on-page and off-page seo, social bookmarking, etc. etc.
