The Value of a Press Release

Greetings,

There is a lot of talk out there regarding press releases and submission services. There is talk that in 2013, this will be the new backlink.

Realizing that this is only one dimension, I am curious to see what others think in regard to utilizing press release distribution networks.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Josh

Certain press release sites give more authority to your link so yes, it is a great idea to utilize these. Much better than posting in forums or your web2.0 squidoo page.

I held a podcast just recently discussing this very issue with Sean Kaye. At one point the discussion turned to press releases. We both agreed that press releases, (much like article directories were) will be next to fall victim to the Google hammer.

In what way, and to what extent, who knows, only time will tell.

What we do know however is that press release services are being manipulated solely for SEO purposes. You've only got to take a look around at some of the cheap services being offered to see evidence of this. (let alone half the crap that's getting through prweb.com)

Press releases are valuable for market traction gaining for brands. On a side note, yes, it also happens to help SEO.

The real SEO should be non-manipulative social opinions, as long as the website conforms to content quality standards. That's all.

This is really interesting. I do see that there could be a downfall, just like any other ranking factor that has since been devalued by Google.

I guess the last thread you started on this topic got deleted...

So (again) Press releases are NOT the "new" backlink.

The trend in 2013 will be an increase in press release submission networks as we have continued to since an increased into the tail end of 2012.

A press release can get you links from places you just wouldn't get otherwise. They are very valuable.

I remember when press releases were for the press... to entice them to write about your news. Today, most people see them as a way to create backlinks and look more professional. It's too bad, because if more people took the time to use them the way they were intended, the impact would be so much greater.

      Brian,

That's very profound. Sad, but true. Everyone is looking for the next way to trick the search engines. That's just the times in which we live in my friend.

Press releases are more for brand building. I am presuming it can work wonders for a good product launch or very niche sites.

If you are focusing on just backlinks then you totally wasting your time (and money). Sure, the links can be very helpful to you.. but that's definitely not what PRs are for.

PR is a way to increase your awareness and building of a brand name. Backlink is just additional bonus to you.
