I prefer Mingle forum... it's a lighter plugin than Simple Press.

I know this post says WordPress Forum Plugin but I couldn't help myself to add this about something that isn't.

I use something that's not a WordPress Plugin, it's called Simple Machines and you can upload it through ftp and install it just as easily as WordPress. You then use a WordPress to Simple Machines Bridge Plugin to tie the two together.

Might be worth a look at.

I'm also commenting on this so I can follow the thread to see what experience other have had with WordPress forum plugins so that I can try others in the future.

You may come across something called Mingle Forum, but their website is full of affiliate marketing nonsense and far too much advertising; my gut feeling is to stay away from it given there are better choices, this forum post is full of dissatisfied users.

bbPress is from Automattic, the Wordpress folks and easily integrates with Wordpress.

I'm asking sorry to the OP as this isn't a WP plugin but I also use Simple Machines and it works without any hickups. I put it into a subdomain as it's not possible to run it inside WP.

8485marketing - could you PM me about that bridge plugin you mentioned. What does that plugin resolves?.

    Mingle for sure.

Currently using it with a few thousand members and 5,000+ posts and have never had a problem. My members also love how easy it is to use.

I was going to suggest Mingle also - very easy to use and very light. Also easy to customize and easy for users also.

      Cheers,

The one question I have is exactly how do you make money with a forum? Are you limiting it to selling items, using Adsense? I'm curious. I have seen so many forums and they seem to be places to interact, but not really a method of generating income.
Just curious if anyone here is actually benefiting from a forum (other than the obvious one we are one. ) :-)

By having a forum you gain members to your website. these members can be marketed to via email or through a special offers section within the forum. Membership fees to access the forum can also be applied. You can also charge other product owners to advertise their products within the special offers section. You can offer paid advertising in general too. Look at the top of this page for example, there's a banner ad.

Thanks, I appreciate your reply. I'm just not certain the income would offset the time it could take to administer the forum.
I suspect for some, especially niche-type forums, it could work well.

You are correct there. A forum is not a small undertaking and I would guess that the majority of forums out there do not make back the money and time it costs to run them.

The more popular a forum becomes the more money can be made from them, but the more time and resources are needed to maintain it.

One of the better ways to monetize a forum these days is to create a private forum where only those who have paid a subscription get access to the forum. It means you are not going to open yourself to all the spam and junk associated with public forums.

  • SimplePress, at least according to my tests and specific requirements, especially accessibility for viewers and members with assistive software and tools like screenreader software for the totally blind and magnifiers for the visually impaired, and also because social register, login and WP user mailing list integration functionalities are quite simple and easy to implement with SimplePress. More importantly: SimplePress support is excellent!

It really depends on what type of functionality you need. They each have pros and cons in my experience

Simpleress - excellent integration with WordPress out of the box, great "full forum" functionality, but can be slow when it gets busy

bbPress - also integrates with WordPress out of the box, is very simple to use, but has quite limited functionality

Vanilla Forum - outstanding speed and functionality, integrates with WP via single sign on (with some coaxing), great for complex functionality requirements.
