I FEEL LIKE I'M TAKING CRAZY PILLS! AHHH!!!!

I've been around the block a few times.

I've had some companies, some awesome successes, some miserable failures, and through them all - I've learned a LOT.

One of the greatest lessons I've learned? THINGS CHANGE ALL THE [censored] time.

So here's my history.

I started with eBay, then I went into websites, then I went into affiliate marketing, then I went into doing SEO for people and made a crap load of money doing it.

Then ultimately I went back to eBay, whilst keeping some affiliate sites that generate some income - as I saw that was the funnest - and most profitable for me while keeping my sanity.

Then, I decided to start teaching people eBay and have built a site related to that using what I've learned.

All-in-all I've seen a LOT of changes on the Internet -- and I've seen Google come out with policies, algorithm changes, updates, changes in policies, etc.

I follow -- quite closely, the SOURCES of the Internet changes.... You know, the Matt Cutts', and his friends - I figure he'd be one to listen to.

I DON'T listen to people who do 'SEO' for a living. Why?

Well, I'll tell you why -- there are many types of people who do SEO.

People who KNOW what they're doing... (who are few and far between)

And people who do SEO the same way they did it in:

pre-2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2007 and a half, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2011 and a half, 2012, 2012 and half, etc.

And they do the same thing, selling the same product over and over again claiming that their tactics work STILL...

Like I said - the Internet ALWAYS changes...and the rules of 'backlinking' and 'saturation percentages' and 'authority' and 'content to code ratios' and 'meta keywords' and the like always fluctuate.

And next year there will be something else that 3,424,234 marketers will fight over-- where one will say 'I'm right' and the other will say 'Nuh uh! I am times infinity infinities!'

And the truth of the matter is, they BOTH WERE --- depending on the millisecond they learned their tactic.

But for as long as I've been around, here is one thing that HAS remained a constant.

Have a phenomenal product that people love and are willing to buy.

From there, you'll KNOW how to market it almost instinctively.

I get what you mean. I have been around the block for some time too.

And when I am proud of a product I am not ashamed to go out and make noise about it.

It took me a lot of time to get there. To align my head with my heart, and find things to sell where both parts are happily working together.

    It is a powerful experience.

And when you get that point, the details don't really matter.

And then your marketing looks ----- 'NATURAL'.

I think this is what Google's been talking about this whole time, eh? (And I'm not even Canadian)

They only want people/products that people have 'heads and hearts' behind because then they know that the marketing is almost 'instinctual' and 'natural'.

      Perfect? No.

      But 'natural'.

This is the secret sauce. I think many of us were at some point seduced by the promise of a faster, better, bigger, cheaper way to get rankings, traffic, conversions, etc. And it is these things that are always changing in reaction to Google.

Having great products, and great service (or content) has not changed, and always gets results.

Nice post. Good reminder for all.

Yet Matt Cutts spews a bunch of propaganda to scare people into buying into Google's omniscience while SEO experts test and base their ideas on actual results.

You really can't believe anything that comes out of Google's mouth any more than the latest "guru" flogging their new anti-Panda product.

  • While I agree that Matt Cutts tends to be very vague in his 'how to do stuff to rank in my Search Engine' videos, I do appreciate his basic tenants of website construction:

"Just give us good, non spammy stuff and Google will do its best to reward you"

very true words. There are still games you can play with Google, but they are becoming wiser and more responsive by the day. Good, quality, informative, FULL content, added regularly, is the best way to approach ranking in Google.

It's not enough just to add good quality content regularly to your blog. You need to get that content in front of your target audience and get them linking, sharing, liking, tweeting, +1'ing, pinning and so on to it. You need to get them on your site, engaged, and enjoying your content. I could write some of the best content ever written but if no one ever sees or interacts with it Google will not reward me with a favourable ranking.

This kinda plays into what we've been saying as well.

It's one of those 'do it this way because it's right' tactics.

But there are a lot of factors of 'well it depends on your audience, your placement, your source, your arena, your demographics, etc.'.

You may be right in YOUR situation, on YOUR site, with YOUR product.

But, when you have a product, a good, well research product that you know more about than anyone else --- then you'll KNOW how to market it.... and get your customers 'engaged'.

Yeah, you're right about constant changes on the internet!
We all need to adjust to them, because what was working
    in 2002. doesn't work now!

Beside awesome product you might have you also need to build
trust, because people will buy your product when they know
    and like you!

  • What might be sad is that people are making a ton of money on it.

My life changed when I heard a guy tell me one day: "Take what your good at, and sell it"

Do I remember the guys name?

No. Do I remember that he was Cuban? Yes.

From there - I went from selling exclusively on eBay to juggling selling on eBay and being an education specialist and having a successful coaching team. I've never looked back.

You won't go far boxing up crap.

You can make a lot of money, maybe even get a 6 figure check in a couple months.

But when you buy that Ferrari with it - and the bottom falls out, you're stuck with the insurance payments and nothing to show for it but a rented apartment building with an expensive car parked out in front.

Exactly, as in life, everything changes. If you can't keep up with the change, someone else will beat you to the punch. I enjoyed reading your post, thank you.

I think we are basically saying the same thing here. You need good product / content that is high quality / works and you need to be marketing it to your target audience.

Getting people to know, like and trust you is cool and all, however - if you're doing it backwards, you won't make any money regardless of who like and trust you.

Most of that comes down to branding yourself, but it's known that - leading with branding will not always create results, leading with results however, will ALWAYS create branding.

People will know, like and trust you when you demonstrate your expertise such as putting out a good product, and they'll continue to buy from you as long as your leading with RESULTS first, not branding.

What's the point of getting people to like and trust you as a marketer if you have nothing for them to buy that you created, or any reason for them to trust you at all?!

  • What you create and share, though, really IS your branding.

    Isn't it?

Aren't you essentially putting your 'brand' out there with your customer service, product, results, etc?

Yasssir, you're right about that, I was referring to another post on the logic of getting people to know, like and trust you. I hear people say it all the time, but sometimes no matter what you do or how much you break your back, people will still either like or dislike you. The best thing to do is just lead with RESULTS, you're customers will build the right brand for you and life get's much easier
