List building - one big list or split by themes ?

Hi warriors

Would you please help me with my dilemma regarding the list building. I am running a quite large website that is targeting webmasters and providing seo tools, articles etc. The main theme of the website is SEO but there are dedicated categories for adsense, adwords, internet marketing, podcasting, email marketing etc - about 30 topics in total.

Although i am running it for over 3 years now, somehow i never thought about building an email list there and use it. Don't ask me why - it just started as a free resource for webmasters and was making good money with Adsense and some affiliate sales. Dang, i just have looked at the stats and it was 3.5 million visitors that have missed the opportunity to subscribe

Anyways, now it's time to change this and i am about to set up an autoresponder and offer some cool free stuff for my visitors.

Now here is the main question - it is better to set up a global list for the whole site and have one big list of subscribers or would it be better to set up a list for each category and have several laser targeted lists ?

Somehow i think it is better to split it up as it would be easier to target the right people with right offers of their interest.

If i go the split route - is it still possible to email all lists at once WITHOUT sending duplicate emails to people that will subscribe for several lists ? I am using Aweber - does it offer such functionality ?

Thank you very much for your time

There is an option in AWeber to send broadcast messages to multiple lists. If an address is subscribed to multiple lists they will only receive one email.

Might be best to have one big list and also break it down into niche lists. Only stands to reason, the better you target, the more sales you stand to make.

Course I am no list expert

Ah, that's cool - so this problem would be solved

Yeah, that was my thought - i can send useful info only to the people that are really interested in a subject. But if all of them would subscribe to my "big" list, how would i break it down afterwards ?

You could start out with one big list, coming from your main site.

Then from there you could offer different themed info/surveys to build more tightly targeted sublists and find out who is interested in what. And once you find out what they want, just deliver it to them.
