Has everyone gone to Wordpress or are there still people using static (standard) html web pages for landing pages?

I look forward to hearing your input.
Thanks

Are you comfortable with editing HTML? If so, I kind of lean towards using static pages for this purpose. Even with fancy themes like OptimizePress, I still feel I have more immediate control over my landing page if I use HTML.

So, I'm a web developer. I freelanced primarily as a Wordpress developer for almost a year and I find myself still building landing pages in simple html.

Wordpress is a sledge hammer and all you need is to hang a picture on the wall.

Wordpress can make a stand alone page to use for a squeeze page. Nice if you want to include other content on that domain. Simply use exclude pages.

    hope this helps!

Define "landing page"! - It can be anything, so you should be more specific: are you talking about the main page of a website, a squeeze page or a sales page? Wherever the visitors arrive - that's the landing page: they 'landed' there.

So, which type of landing page are you talking about?

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I was referring to a pure landing page where you bring a visitor to a specific offer or sale. The page may be separate from your main website.

Static pages load faster but wordpress is more flexible and customizable.

You can make use of those free static html landing pages; easily editable with your content

If you're not familar with html and prefer something more systematic and customzable then wordpress might be a better fit.

With WordPress, you can use the visual editor to edit the page or the html function to use html. All you need to know is how to structure the page so that it looks the way you want.

So, I think WordPress could be better.

I use Wordpress and make themes as well, one offs, all in wordpress, I also use Profits Theme, for my blog, I like that I can make a new page in WP and go all out on seo, and that page well be on the search engine in less then 3 weeks, like on the first page.

    Ok hope this helps you.
    Thanks Rob.

If you need the features of wordpress, go for it.

If not don't bloat your site down with it. It won't be helping you.

Many people are using wordpress and many are using static html. It depends what you are comfortable with.

Wordpress is easy to learn. No coding required. Lots of plugins and themes available in the market.

That's it. Exactly what are you looking for???

For squeeze pages and sales pages, I use my own hand written "static" (although they're technically not static) PHP pages.

This is because I can't be bothered to mess around with people's plug ins to get features that I can add myself

    Loved "Genericsteele's" sledgehammer metaphor.

I track everything that I can, and writing my own php pages makes it easier for me to track opt ins and sales, without having to go to some annoying 3rd party, and tweak the page as I like.

90%+ of my dozens of sites are static html, with embedded videos and other elements. I've got a handful of WP sites online as well; the challenge is I can quickly put something exactly as I want it to appear, using DW/static html in a few hours for a new site; where for WP it's a hassle to make it look exactly how I want, even with templates to modify... and for many new sites I don't need nor want to have articles and backend membership integrated (though for some of my more important sites, I'm moving towards that direction).

Each has their use -- for "main business site" I'd use a large WP site that's full featured, and take the dozens of hours to make it look like you want... for quick sites, html via DW is still best.

Static HTML (technically PHP) but, yes - for the pure reason as it loads faster than Wordpress and time is money

Keep in mind that when you use Wordpress to create a single page, you are not just creating a single page.

You are creating a database that needs to be called (and maintained), along with a platform that needs to be maintained and updated. Unless you feel particularly lucky, you'll need a few security plugins. Every your page needs to make another server or database call, you add to response time. If you use the convenient Fantastico installation with the default values, you also open your server to some security holes.

The sledgehammer metaphor was particularly apt.

There are many sites like Open Source Web Design (www.oswd.org) where you can download professional page templates and simply modify the content. For a one page site or standalone landing page, these make much more sense to me than a full blown Wordpress install...

Why? then, could I change some default value or manually would be better?

It depends on what the goal of the page is. If I want it to fit within my theme, I'll use Wordpress. If I want it to be different, I'll use html.

I would prefer to use static (standard) html web pages for my landing pages to have more control. Unfortunately, I do not have much html and programming knowledge so I am stuck with Wordpress at the moment. I hope to read some html books and use static html pages one day.

I do either wordpress or HTML using KompoZer to edit landing page templates. I have been focusing more on Wordpress recently because I use a plugin called A/B testing that I picked up from WPMUDEV that rotates my landing page themes and displays bounce rate statistics. I think I would prefer to use HTML as I do think it loads much faster and no one is going to wait more then 5 seconds for a webpage to load. I wonder if there is any easy way to get HTML pages to rotate.

if you have the knowledge to build website (html from scratch) then you should do that. if you want to create something fast for a short of period of time and you do not have the knowledge, WP is the way

HTML is faster without a doubt, but I now prefer WP and having things set up as an actual website (sort of), mainly because I target real businesses with some of my offerings (too many IM folks want everything for a few dollars, so I no longer care if they show up or not) and many businesses will typically discredit a landing page as soon as they see it. Also, the color red does not fly well with brick-and-mortar businesses either like it does with IM people. That's been my experience from my tracking results.

A single page with html more flexiblel if you want to use a landing page as a sales page.
If you use it as a squeeze page then it will be easier to use wordpress.
Optimizepress is reliable with a lot of options, fast customization and seo friendly.

As WordPress gets more complicated, I started to move away from it especially for creating simple landing pages. WordPress is definitely a powerful CMS that makes certain tasks a lot easier but WordPress isn't the single answer to all my needs.

WordPress can do static pages as well, so with proper knowledge you can get your landing page look the way you want with no HTML page needed.

The default values are well known to hackers. I won't go into detail because i don't want to do a clinic on hacking WP. Just know that because Fantastico uses a set pattern when setting up both the site and the database, it eliminates an awful lot of the grunt work in a brute force hack.

The best things you can do are to use unique usernames and strong passwords when setting things up. Even the manual install isn't all that complicated.

Why would you want to go through the hassle of setting up and maintaining a database-driven CMS to deliver a single static page?

With proper knowledge, you can get a plain html page to look the way you want it. You'll also end up with a faster loading, more secure landing page.

I do all my websites in WordPress now even static content sites. It's very SEO friendly and the huge variety of plugins allows me to do anything I want very quickly. Plus it makes updating the website much easier. Although, because so many WordPress sites are spammy I wonder if a standard HTML website might have benefits from an SEO perspective.
