What kind of freelance work can I do at this stage?

Hi, can anyone throw some ideas at me because I am out of work until mid summer and was hoping to do some freelance until then.

I'm a knower of everything master of nothing when it comes to creating websites, SEO, facebook, twitter, photoshop, marketing etc. Would it be best to just make websites for local people who are maybe looking for xyz but on a budget (I couldn't charge much with no certs).

No just an idea of how I would even go about utilizing my skills over the next few months to make an income.

Thanks a lot.

You can definitely build sites for people. Even a basic website is needed by many people. You can charge a small fee and have your income supplemented by affiliate commissions to hosting companies. HostGator pays up to $125 bucks per referral.

You could also try SEO. You don't even have to do it yourself, just outsource it to people in the Warriors for Hire section. Since you know the basics you'll know what you are talking about and will be able to get clients. Then you can just outsource the majority of the work.

At least you have some hobbies right? have you ever tried utilizing your (hidden) writing skill by writing niche for other people who have the same interest with yo? I know I have, there are some people who will pay me for some bucks by giving them a creative writing about some niche. Looking for client is not easy, except you now some good place to meet with potential employer such as oDesk, Elance, Freelancer, or iWiriter.

  • Byron,

Have you tried creating a profile on elance and bidding on jobs there? You could also definitely start out charging people for web design or marketing services. To get your foot in the door to doing work like that, you could always do a website pro-bono or really cheap for someone in order to get referrals. I know that may not be ideal if you don’t have any income but it is also a slow process sometimes. The other alternative is find websites online that are poorly designed and contact the owners about redesign work. Most of the time people know they need something better but also realize that it is cost prohibitive. If you approach them and offer services for cheap and let them know your story, chances are they will take you up on the offer.
I would also work on developing a good web presence like some social media accounts and maybe an about.me profile to showcase your skills. Even if you don’t have any tangible stuff to show, you can still write about what you know.

I read the article and it seems very well structured and with strong reasons and arguments. I think it is important for newbies to read a lot before starting to work.

If you have a skill such as website design then you need to find your market. A basic place to start would be somewhere like Fivver.com. This is only if you want to get experience and see if you enjoy creating websites.

Then you could progress to setting up your own website and creating a portfolio of designs. Placing an ad in the Warriors for Hire section might be a good step too.

    Good luck with it.
