List Building: Traffic Case Study

Hi,

I'm building a list at the moment and thought it might be useful to people if I shared my traffic results. I'm not worried about giving this information away as my sources are far from secret.


I have tried two main traffic sources this week:
  1. Solo Ads
  2. Interstitial Adverts (Adfly)
Solo Ads
So my first attempt at driving massive traffic to the new list was a solo ad. I found a guy online who had great reviews and so sent my ad details. I paid $40 for 125 unique clicks. The seller over delivered on clicks and I ended up getting 72 opt-ins and one OTO sale of $9.99. This works out at $30.01 spent to get 72 opt-ins. This is $0.41 per subscriber. Not bad at all!

Interstitial Adverts (Adfly)
I next set up an advertising campaign on Adfly to show Interstitial Ads as recommended by someone in this forum. With VAT, I paid $6.72 for 14,000 impressions from proxy servers (cheap, human traffic). I was astounded by the results. Throughout the afternoon that this was running, I received 153 opt-ins! There were no OTO sales. That works out at $0.04 per subscriber! I was really pleased with this.

Summary
I was blown away by the response from the Adfly campaign. I'm certain that the subscribers from the solo ad will be more responsive than the subscribers from Adfly, but I will definitely be using Adfly to build lists quickly and on the cheap, going forward.

My landing page seems to have converted well (you can view it here) so I'm really pleased with that, but I will be testing out other OTOs as this one doesn't seem to have done too well.

I just wanted to share my results so that they might help other people.

What are your thoughts? Any case studies of your own? Do you know how responsive these subscribers are likely to be? Am I missing something?

      Wow, I didn't realise how good the results were until I read this. I'm worried that it's a one-off so I'll run the campaign again. The landing page is nothing special really, just some custom graphics and an ad copy I wrote.

      I'll keep you posted on the result I get from my next campaign with Adfly, running later today.

    I've used adf.ly in the past and it's a very cheap source of traffic but it depends on the results you get from that list.

    Deppending on the country, traffic can suck because at least in my country... adf.ly traffic comes from people who watch movies online (mostly teenagers who don't have anything else to do).

    Internationally... there are a lot of sources... but nevertheless, a subscriber is a subscriber so congrats on your results until now.

    Never used adf.ly traffic and will never use. I have red so many posts about adf.ly traffic, and posts was about bad quality and not responsive traffic. The subscribers number does not matter if subs never buy.

      Totally agree, it's all about the responsiveness of the list. I'll report back here after I've had a chance to really test the list.

    Congrats for that! I thought adf.lf won't get you anywhere with that wild traffic. Well there are other factor too, it depend on the niche really. Some people won't get away with adf.ly method of delaying a link, maybe that is the chance for your website to shine. I guess I can share my story in here anyway.

    I am using social network marketing for my traffic source. Even though it is free, I can generate around than 900 - 1000 traffic with my tumblr site. Of course my hard work won't betray me, I have to post more than 10 very good image post with a proper tag. I spend one or two hours a day for this.

    I hate to burst your bubble there dude, but that adfly traffic is useless and this will become apparent to you, hopefully sooner rather than later. I'd suggest you ditch adfly. What's the point in building a large list of unresponsive subscribers?

    Even solo ad traffic is suspect these days, but adfly? bloody awful, and will do a lot more harm than good for you in the long run. Wait and see for yourself. There's a very good reason that traffic is so cheap. If you honestly believe you can generate leads for 4 cents then you seriously need to brush up on your internet marketing.

    I didn't write this comment to piss all over your results. I wrote it because your so called case study will do a lot of harm for other newbies reading this thread - and that's just not right.

      Well, I guess we're all here to learn, so I appreciate your comments, although a little brash.

      My results shouldn't do any harm, as I am just being open and honest about what I am seeing. Whether or not it converts well remains to be seen, but I've mentioned that all along and will post my honest results here once I know more.

      I've been in internet marketing for quite a while now, making a good income, so I know that leads don't usually come cheap, but thanks for insulting my intelligence

      The fact is I'd never tried Adfly, I tried it, it's getting a good subscriber rate and so I'll try to build a relationship with them like I do all my list.

      Your landing page looks good. and you received a good opt-in rate. It will be interesting to see what the buy rate becomes.

      I was advised to stay away from adfly, because you cannot get traffic that is targeted enough. Also depending on where the traffic is coming from they may not be able to afford to buy your product. Again, let us know about your buy rate.

      The money is only in the list if you end up with a list that buys. So size doesn't really matter. It's the action they take.

      I like how people add a rudeness disclaimer like its supposed to make it better for being rude :confused:

      There are many ways you could have responded, you choose to go that route... Shame

      Also, I've never used adfly, why do u guys think it gives such "bad " traffic. Where do they get there leads...

    I've tried to build a list with adfly before and none of the subscribers were responsive. Solo Ads have always been my best method of getting responsive subscribers even if there are less opt-ins.

      I've made a test with adfly last year and had about 2400 sign up to my list.
      All my followup emails only generated only around $10 out of these 2400.
      I've promoted CPA offers, WSOs and Clickbank offers to them.

      Deleted that whole list.

      Concentrate on Solo Ads or give PPV a try for your list.

        Are PPV ads more targeted than Adfly? I thought PPV was all about pop-ups, pop-unders. I'm guessing it's all about where the advert displays, i.e. on what sites? Any advice on PPV, i'd like to try it out.

          I deleted my adf.ly subscribers too.

          Don't forget that the larger your list, the more expensive your autoresponder costs. It's pointless paying extra money to keep unresponsive subscribers on your list.

    Well I also used Adfly last week 5K visitors for $5. I was offering free version gaming script on my website. When my ad was active I got 29 downloads of the free version. I was very impressed with Adfly but in 29 download not a single user installed my free product. I'm disappointed with Adfly.
    My Conclusin - Adfly is great source to get traffic but the visitors are non targeted. If you want traffic go for it but don't expect conversions.

    About the adfly? those subs are worth nothing.

    just space in your autoresponder..

    However if you still want to build a list using adfly traffic, make your offer+ squeeze as GENERAL as possible..

    something like -

    "Learn how to make a monthly income in a single day working from home"

    and all that..

    the deeper you go with that kind of traffic, the more you lose.

    Well...to complete this thread, my results came in yesterday.

    I sent an email to ONLY the people that joined through Adfly, which was 310 in total by the end, costing me a total of $12.

    Overall, I had...3 people open the email, with no clicks.

    The email wasn't a promotion, but a freebie, with a great subject line and body.

    I appreciate everyone who wished me well with this test and hopefully you can take something away from it. Maybe there is still more to Adfly traffic. I used proxy traffic from all over the world, but you can pay more for more targeted traffic.

    As for me, I've deleted these subscribers (except for the 3 responsive ones!) as they are just taking up space in my autoresponder and lowering my percentages of opens and clicks.

    As for Adfly traffic, I'm now going to test it with some free CPA gaming offers, so will let you know how that converts.

    Maybe if you targeted just the UK or US you may have better results
    I would advise you if using to promote cpa offers to use your own landing page first so not to send 1000 people to your cpa offer and have no conversion

    I've done a few quick tests with adfly before and got about 2 opt ins from several thousand visitors.

    I then tried with a CPA offer wall populated with free gaming zip submit offers and proceeded to lose the rest of my money.

    However, if you test every possible option in adfly with enough different CPA offers, you might be able to make a profit.

    Adfly results - 2,000 impressions from Australia and Canada. Promoted a free online war game. The offer paid $1.10 per free signup. 0 signups! lol.

    If you can moniterise it even if its low ball like 2 or 3% the traffic is so cheap and easy to scale up you will make a profit
