A lesson learned in list-building

Hey folks.

Just realised I don't give back enough on this forum, so here's a big lesson I learned in list-building.

All this shit you hear the gurus tell you about giving your best stuff away for free is just that - shit.

I tried my hand in list-building a couple of years ago. I gave 'em EVERYTHING! I took my product apart and gave away everything in my product for free!

That product was selling well (and still is). With a good video salesletter, it was converting at 2-3% at $37. I was sending traffic directly to the salespage and making a good living. It was painful taking that traffic away and directing it to my list. The list didn't make me a single penny. I tried so many different things, but people just wouldn't buy from my list.

So eventually I gave up and went back to SEO and driving traffic directly to my salespage.

Now though, 2 years later, I've come back to list building. I'm now approaching it in a whole different way, and it's working great.

The secret, I've found, is not just in providing good information, but it's about being inspiring, motivating and interesting to listen to. I'm in health & fitness, so not sure how much this applies in other niches, but in health & fitness, if you just give e'm step-by-step lists on how to do something, they get bored, stop opening your emails, and don't buy your product.

If, on the other hand, you are interesting to listen to, you give your readers powerful new ideas, new ways of looking at things using metaphor etc, and are fun and entertaining, motivating and inspiring, people will follow you and they will buy your stuff. Leave the step-by-step stuff for your products.

If you're into creating your own products, don't forget to also be inspiring inside the actual product as well. As Eben Pagan describes in his Guru Blueprint course, you should always seek to... educate, inspire and motivate.

I suggest you inspire and motivate in your autoresponder sequence, then, in your product, do some more inspiring and motivating, and then educate.

People don't take action on your educational points unless you inspire and motivate them first. Every good article for example, always starts with something motivating. A good weight loss article might for example start off by telling you how this little known technique was used by the great gama of india to shed 200 lb of fat, BEFORE going into the details of the technique.

So yeh, find your voice, get good at writing, become INTERESTING in your writing. See how the pros do it and copy 'em. Go read the highest circulated trade magazines in your niche. If people didn't find these guys fascinating, they'd be outta business.

I hope you find this helpful.

Great post mate, I believe the trick to great email marketing is in the relationship.

The type of relationship you have differs in each market, but is always important.

With that said, inspiring and motivating emails are bound to make sales, no matter what niche you are in

The amount of information you give away for free depends
upon what you're trying to sell to your list of subscribers.

For example, if you're trying to sell your services, physical
products or software, then the more information you give
away that moves people closer to a buying decision - the
      better.

However, if you're selling INFORMATION products, then you
need to be very selective in the information you give away
for free and do it very strategically.

Too many people follow the advice of giving away tons of
great content and then end up with a list of subscribers
who expect great content for free.

      Dedicated to mutual success,

      Shaun

    Nice post.
I agree with Shaun on giving too much stuff away free.
I once gave away a pdf and video to my list for 52 weeks of the year, bu got very few buyers for my promotions.

Interesting to hear the OP's feedback and more from others in this thread about listbuilding. I have several lists and they don't convert nearly as well as sending traffic to my sales pages, either. Maybe I'm "doing it wrong"...I give tons of info away and maybe, maybe I've broken even on my aweber fees.

    Excellent post!!

This summarizes the core of list building.
    Create relationship and values.

Selling should be your last agenda.
The 1st thing in list building is to have
    Low unsubscription rate.
This show your list is willing to hear
    From you again.

Typically, I will only sell after few
    Buddy emails..
By then, my list is more
    Comfortable with me

This system works great for my list.

    Hey Snow...

Are you building a list of buyers...do you make them opt-in before downloading or accessing your product?

If yes...you are still list building...and creating a more valuable asset.

A list of buyers...and if your product over delivers you are also creating a list of raving fans.

Your list may not be as large a list as you can build with freebie seekers but it will convert much better if they love the product...

Initially you were inexperience about it and give out all you details for nothing, so you were told.

If you want to do list building, it's important you get a good copy writer to create your follow up emails for you. Once you neglect this aspect you are going to be creating a big gap between your list and YOU.

Above all, the list most be targeted.

    Well done on your discovery.

Nice post OP, one of my first problem when I started to build my list was the major mistake to target freebie people, not the buying people. So changed my tactic to get the people on my list after them buying my product. Then I knew I had a targeted audience willing to spend money and after that I gave them freebies mixed with selling them products.

You don't need a copywriter to write your follow ups for you. That would get super expensive super quickly and I doubt most people would be able to afford that. IMO you are better off writing yourself and letting people see your personality through your emails. Look at someone like Shoemoney if you're on his list you'll see his emails often have spelling mistakes and grammatical errors and sometimes don't even make sense but his personality shines through and you know that he kills it every time he sends out a promo email despite them not being super slick and polished.

    Hi good post
I don't think you have to be great at selling though. Good affiliate stuff comes with swipes to send out. I do think you have to be yourself though. I change a lot of swipes, to make it sound as though it's come from me. Strangely, the times I have given something away, were the times that not many people opened the email...I wonder why...

Comments like "add value" and "selling should be your last agenda," etc are kernels of corn from last nights meal...their context and original meaning is lost in a pile of poo. You wouldn't setup an auto body shop without knowing how to fix dents, would you? It is mildly helpful to have done it before you try to sell information on how to do it. :p

The OP has discovered that you don't sell features, you sell benefits. generally speaking, selling people what they want (benefit, dream) will always perform better than selling them what they need (work involved).

Depends. Can you write? Will your personality shining through lead to more conversions or less? If not, hire a copywriter, or follow snow's advice, and "get good at writing"

This reminds me of what Terry Dean recently said:

Who gets paid more today ...teachers or celebrities?

This isn't about who deserves to get paid more. It's about who actually gets paid more...
    And...
If you want to separate yourself from others today, find ways to mix in ENTERTAINMENT and not just content.

I've had a tough time getting started building a list, but it'll come on time. Right now I'm just writing and writing and building my blog and getting a few of my articles on EZA. I recognize how important a list is but the list just isn't happening yet.

    Hello Snow_Predator,

Thanks for the great info! As a writer (blog posting, article writing, author, autoresponder emails, sales letters), I always find that when you include interesting stories, metaphors, and accounts in your emails, articles, blog posts, etc., you will often get a better response and better interaction (which is definitely needed in our "social" world today).

Almost any type of information can be found if you look hard enough, as there are plenty of PDF documents, research papers, and more. However, the vast majority of people are not wanting to wade through tons of dry facts and try to figure it out themselves. Instead, they want you, as the writer (and researcher), to go through that data, figure out what these documents are telling you, and then present it in a fun and engaging manner.

By mastering this, you can get people to listen to you, trust in you, and purchase from you. This might be the greatest skill needed to really be successful, both online AND offline. That's why great writers (copywriters, and also article and book writers) can make considerable amounts of money if they learn the true secret of writing, interacting, connecting, and selling (without hard-selling).

Thanks again for the post and great info!

    Take care,
