Is this a niche?

I'm still researching different ideas and keywords. I came across a two-word, keyword that gets 5000 searchs per month but the downside is it has 247,000 sites listed in Google. I checked the first page sites and they are not very timely, one is a blog post from 2003 and only has 36 backlinks to it. Several of the other sites are also in this same shape.

My question is, is this a viable niche? With the small amount of backlinks to these pages, if I were to submit 100 articles, could I get listed on the first page? Is this a niche you would target?

    Seems to me you won't need 100 articles to beat the other sites.

    One or 2 good articles with the keyword and anchor text plus some social bookmarking...digg it etc. and keep up the backlink work or outsource it.

    Check out what the competition is by putting quotes around the keyword.

    Go to google trends and see if it's on the rise or decline...just all the normal stuff you can read about here.

    But basically...go for it and see.

    Bottom line is that given the same exact page title that matches the exact keyword you are targeting, Google will award the high spot to the page with the most page rank.

    I always do a search to see if there are any posts with the same exact potential title in which all have page rank in every slot on the first page.

    If only the first result has PR then I know that If I can get PR1 even, then I am in slot 2.

    1. Have you made an exact search with quotes?
    2. Have you checked the keyword search with "AllInTitle"?
    3. Does the search show any PPC ads?
    The answers to these three questions will enable you to know if there is any real competition and also if a market exists.
