Advice for a fermium member site

*freemium

I run an online language community which is free to sign up to. Currently you can contact language learners from around the world and participate in groups.

I'm developing language courses for the site and language courses for iOS.

The site has a premium subscription members can sign up to

But what I want to know is what are your top tips for running a freemium member site? What should I take into account/avoid etc

Thanks!

Well it depends. What makes the premium subscription different or better? Or is that what you're asking us - how to differentiate it?

Just asking if there are any general techniques involved for successful member sites which have a freemium business model.

It is easy to lead people towards premium membership by limiting the access. As you run the learning website, you know the best which part of your courses are more and less important. Offer less important part for the freemium members. It is a good tactic. By this, people will become sure about your course's quality.

Well for plenty of sites they give you the information or part of the information for free but in order to get the 'good stuff' they want you to purchase a subscription or purchase individual products.

I'm doing something similar myself but if your free content is garbage then people will naturally assume that your paid content is no better. You want people to be amazed at what you're giving away free so that they'll think buying from you is a no brainer. Good luck!
