What is the difference between the two? I'm new to Wordpress.. I've used my two current affiliate sites on Webs but want to make the jump to Wordpress as I've heard there are a lot more options and customization options.

WordPress.org allows self-hosting. You purchase a domain name and hosting and install WordPress onto your site. You can then create it how you wish. WordPress.com hosts your site for you. Also, you can use plug-ins on your own site, but not on WordPress.com.

If you are looking to have more freedom with what you do with your site, you are better off with using WordPress on your own hosting.

The key difference for marketing purposes is that wordpress.com is for hobby bloggers only: no form of monetization or marketing is allowed there, no affiliate links, nothing commercial, nor even using a wordpress.com blog to generate traffic to another site.

For the purposes for which 99% of people ask about WordPress blogs in a marketing forum, wordpress.com is therefore simply not an option at all.

It's like night and day. With your own wordpress sites you can do what you want, with the .org your sites can be taken away from you in a blink of an eye. You can't control what you don't own.
