I do less projects & campaigns, and more time preparing and researching them.

I could spend a week+ researching and planning a new website.

It depends what type of project I'm working on. If I'm writing a high quality ebook to sell on Amazon, it can take weeks of research (or only a few days if it's more of a short report). If I outsource the writing for an ebook or articles for a new website, then not much time on research is needed.

As marketingoasis said, it probably depends on what you're doing but...

I used to research things to death; probably scared to fail.

Now, I just START, ask for advice (in this forum) on what I'm doing, tweak, and keep going.

The answer of course is as much as is necessary. There is no minimum or maximum, and there is no way to fine tune it. You simply do as much as the task in hand requires to extract the information you need. Then the hard work starts by having to make it palatable and "must have" for your visitors/clients/buyers.

I've spent 36 months researching one of the books I've wrote and published. Yet on another occasion I found all the material I required for a complicated 40,000 word thesis I was producing for someone, within 2 hours. Needless to say it wasn't written up in 2 hours.

The money is in the research!

Your money on a project is made or lost before you ever begin.
A prime example is: Go rank #1 for one of the toughest KW's out there "weight Loss". Put up a site selling a diet pill, you wont sell hardly any. Now go rank for "lose 2 dress sizes in 2 weeks" and with a trickle of traffic you'll outsell the other one.
These are examples so no need to dissect them. But they are pretty right on. One is a buyers KW and the other is not so much.

This is ONLY one example there are hundreds that don't involve KW's too.

Your money is made before you start the project.

Well, depending on what am going to research, if it's going to take a lot of my time i do it during
    weekends or evenings after work.

If it's something of few minutes i just hit my research tool.

I only research when there is the need.
