When is Something Un-Ethical?

by Greedy

I was having a discussion about this with a new friend of mine.

He pointed out, he felt many niches online use unethical marketing techniques, and was wondering how other marketers and I draw the line.

I thought about it for a bit. How do I decide on a case by case basis with so many CPA/Affiliate products be tossed at me everyday?

I came to the conclusion, if I ever think or have to ask myself if something is unethical, then it is. And I steer clear.

Oddly, I thought it was a pretty good answer and a very live-able concept.

Anyways, happy late Fathers Day to all the dads out there.

    When is Something Un-Ethical?
We all have someone in our lives who we look up
to or for whom we want to do our very best...

If you're not sure if something is unethical, simply
    ask yourself... "Would my mother/father/wife/etc.
be proud of me if I did this?"

This... but also this cannot always be the right way since if someone's parents who are unethical raise their kids with their way, it means that the unethical for the rest will be normal for him... but most of the times, this is the right way to go ^_^

If you don't know when something is unethical then you've no point being in business, or employing others. You should be stacking shelves or flipping burgers under someone else's instruction.

Every lucid person knows the difference between right and wrong, good and bad, ethical or unethical, and we all get that inherent gut feeling when something is either borderline, iffy, or downright bad. This tells us "DON'T DO IT".

Those who go ahead and "do it" knowing it's not right are the sort who can't be trusted in any other walk of life; if you'd pull the wool over the eyes of a customer for monetary gain then you're just as likely to do the same to a friend, or even fleece a family member.

If you're that dense that you can't differentiate between right and wrong, then go out and rob a bank. Ten years or more in the slammer is adequate time to reflect both on the ethics of what you did, and learning how the actions you take will affect your future.

It's all about treating others the same way you would want yourself and your family members to be treated. If you always do that then you should be fine.

Unless ofcourse you treat your family members poorly...

Usually the law provides a good guideline as too whether something is unethical or not...If you're following the law to the letter, then by all means, make as much money as possible doing it.

When I taught Hunter Ed back in Nebraska, we always told the kids that law was something you did when people were watching and ethics was what you did when no one else would ever know.

There are things most sane people agree are right/ethical and things which are wrong/unethical. There is also some gray area where the lines meet. Consider this example:

You're an ardent hunter and an ardent conservationist who respects the quarry. You tell yourself that you don't kill anything you don't intend to use; killing for fun or sport is wrong.

You are out hunting pheasants. Shooting roosters is legal. Shooting hens is not, and getting caught with one carries a stiff penalty. Just as you pull the trigger on a nice rooster, a hen ducks into the field of fire and goes down. What do you do?

      > Do you follow the letter of the law, and leave that dead hen in the grass to feed the scavengers? This violates your principle of using what you kill.

      > Do you stick the hen in your bag, thus violating the law and risking a fine or worse?

      Consider this angle...

Instead of being the hunter, you're the warden. The hunter explains the situation, and you can see that he has counted the accidental hen in his bag limit. You believe he is sincere.

      > Do you let him off with a warning, and maybe confiscating the illegal game?

      > Do you write him a ticket, which he's indicated he will accept as the price of his personal ethos?

      > Do you throw the book at him, impounding his gun and vehicle, and locking him up until he can appear before the local judge?

Ethics is a personal issue which each person must decide for themselves.

The best advice? If it feels wrong, or you think you need to hide it, don't do it.

"Ethics" are quite commonly confused with "morality".

"Ethics", strictly speaking, are an established consensus shared among a group with some relevant commonality. What "you feel right doing, yourself", is morality, really, not "ethics" at all.

But people do quite often use the word "unethical", in particular, when what they actually mean is "immoral". Morality is subjective and individual. Ethics really aren't.

I guess something becomes un-ethical when you have to consider whether or not it's to the benefit and good future for a customer. In marketing, it should be pretty straight forward whether or not a product/service will have a positive impact on the consumer purchasing your goods.

Get off your high horses. This post is full of subjective opinions and nothing based on cogent reasoning. I'm gonna try to not gonna say anything too aggressive because it's gonna start something. The responses here are so naive it's unbelievable.

There's a hell of a lot more to ethics and morality than one's own subjective POV. But it seems to me that most people pass moral judgement solely on how it makes them feel. This is not the case, however.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's wrong, it just means that you don't like it. No, not everyone "knows" or has "gut feelings" about what's "right" and what's "wrong". Just because you sense some moral ambiguity too, doesn't mean that the action in question is morally repugnant. It most likely means that you have a higher degree of social conditioning done to you...and that's neither morally justified nor ethical.

The way I look at is ethics and morality is the simplest way I possibly can. I remove the subjective from it all. See good and bad, evil and righteous are still very subjective to the world in general....but there are two words that are not subjective.

      Create vs destroy.

If a behavior is destructive to myself, the world or others around me then I try really hard to not do it and not encourage that same behavior in others. I strive to create something meaningful, at every turn. I still fail often, but I'm happier and my life and relationships improved when I realized this concept.

      "When is Something Un-Ethical?"

I'll be more than happy to give a few examples. Allow me to elaborate on Un-Ethical tactics.

Pushing crappy products such as pyramid schemes. For example: Making false promises you will be successful in making hundreds of thousands of dollars with no experience etc. "Don't Be A Wuss", go all in. Or accused of being a "Wuss" for not going all in or telling them no thanks, it's not for me.

Other examples: Using blackhat techniques to outrank other sites instead of playing the game fair without the cheap shots. Flagging "Legitimate" ads on Craigslist or reporting "Legitimate" answers that are NOT spammy on Yahoo Answers.

Here's another good example: When you ask a targeted question on a specific problem you're struggling with to another marketer, they give you a smart ass response such as, I charge 150.00 for coaching etc. Even worse, is when you have paid for coaching or a monthly membership to that person's site, they give you that same answer. "I want your money".

Those are good examples of unethical marketing or unethical tactics.

When you try to mislead someone with the intention to take advantage of their ignorance you are doing something immoral and unethical.

Many people try to make money without really helping who pays them for a certain product or service. They may make some money for a while but this business model doesn’t attract repeat customers. Their sneaky success cannot last long.

If you want to build a solid business with repeat customers who will send you more customers (this is the wonderful power of word of mouth) you should always be morally and ethically correct.

This can get really messy quickly because of the whole SUBJECTIVE versus OBJECTIVE divide.

Some people draw the line at LEGALITY. If it's good enough to be legal, it's ethical.

I am not so sure about that.

On the other hand, some have such HIGH publicly proclaimed ideals (ideals they say OTHERS should follow) that everyone falls short and the risk of hypocrisy increases...

Treating others the way you'd like to be treated always worked with me but the problem is not everyone loves themselves. Not everyone had great parents. For some people, life is a game of 'If I don't do it, someone else will...' Their ethical compass is different. Are they necessarily wrong? All the time? In all situations?

It is immoral when I can't justify my actions to myself.

It is unethical when I can't justify my actions to the community or communities I live in.

It is illegal when my actions break a law.

It is unfair when I make use of advantages, that other people do not have, and use these advantages against them.

Most of the time I try to be moral, ethical, legal and fair. It keeps me out of trouble and I don't need to defend myself (yes it is the lazy way out).

On rare occasions I find I am unable to be all four of these. These are times where I have to think deeply about how I define myself.

I have found that people help people, who help other people.

In a dilemma, I ask myself, am I helping the person or people to the best of my ability.

If the answer is yes, I can sleep soundly at night. (What every lazy man wants to do.)

If you wouldn't appreciate it being done to you then most likely it's unethical. If you would be embarrassed if someone you respect found out about it, if your friends or your kids read about what you did by seeing it in the newspaper or if God is your Guide (which works best) and you know He wouldn't approve, then don't do it. If you realize after the fact that perhaps you shouldn't then don't do it in the future. Don't focus on undoing the past, it's what taught you to not do it again. It's what helped you to determine the boundary or expand your understanding. Lack of ethics generally only provide gain for the short term so don't compromise out of jealousy of an unethical persons gains. Sooner or later it fails. Banks, religions and what has been called health care (more correctly an industry) seem to defy that, but their day is coming. Look at the countries kicking Monsanto out, refusing their garbage GMO food, sometimes even by torching it. People are waking up to the lies and deception and taking down a giant. How many heads of banks quit in 2011 because they know people are waking up to their scam. They are trying to hide to avoid the spotlight on their unethical behavior. No matter how much financial gain you reap, it is never worth the price of going down in shame. Can't buy back your reputation. When you think of these things the line between ethical and unethical become clearer. Although it is not a definition, it makes it easier to find.

An ethical porn star gets tested regularly.

    But they're still producing porn.

    Ethics are relative.

In the early days of the Internet, search engines that allowed results to be placed based on a bidding system were considered unethical. Remember the huge backlash back when Yahoo first started doing this, back when they were #1? How dare they rank pages based on who's willing to pay the most! It was one of the biggest reasons that drove people to start searching using that "new" up and coming search engine known as Google.

Now it's considered a standard, acceptable practice.

So what's "unethical" about a CPA offer? Lets start with the incorrect use of the word "free". If you have to fill out a survey, or complete a paid offer to get something, it's not "free", it's compensation. Why is this important? Because, technically, the value of the item you're receiving should be taxed as income.

    So who's really being unethical?

Is it the company, who is typically less than upfront about the process of receiving the promised item? Or is it the person who receives that item and cheats the US Government out of their cut? My point is that in this case what's considered ethical will depend not on the actions of either party - but on your personal views of marketing and government. Not a "consensus", not a written law, just your personal views and nothing more.

Draw the line where you feel comfortable drawing it, because there is no right or wrong answer to your question.

Recently I had to struggle the same question.

I figured out how to turn the herd mentality into one group mentality.

The problem is, it can be done without the groups knowledge, and individual choice can be taken out of the equation.

The MMO niche is much better off with only the "herd" analogy to work with.

That reminds me of what a Supreme Court judge said when asked how he knew something was pornography. He said, "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it."

A comic later quipped that defining porn was easy - if it turned him on it was porn.

Some say ethics is rooted in community standards. I say personal ethics is more important. In some cultures, cheating on your spouse is considered normal and expected. I couldn't imagine doing it. For me it would be both immoral and unethical.
