I spend about $50,000 per month on banner ads and so have a great interest in this question!

The answer is that there is no catch-all answer. Results vary wildly according to the creative treatment, the time of year and the sites that the ad appears on.

My results, and I stress that these are for my campaigns only, show that on average the two best performing sizes I use, by far, are skyscraper units: 120x600 and 160x600. The very worst - with a click through rate of about half the best two - is the standard 728x90 leaderboard wide banner.

Narrow horizontal banners and box units fall in between.

As you can see, my results seem to directly contradict the Marketing Sherpa industry averages.

I guess the question that leads on is why would I continue to use sizes that seem to perform poorly?

The answer is that on the right sites, they perform very well - and some sites that pull good responses don't offer a full range of banner shapes and sizes.

Averages only tell you part of the story where testing and tracking is concerned. You need to look at individual cases as well.

Actually, no, they are not. Not necessarily, anyway. It depends on what you are trying to do, the tone you are trying to set and the audience you are trying to reach.

For the corporate campaigns I'm running, banners are about 100 times more cost effective than other advertising methods. And a darn sight easier to manage!

  • What is performance? Click through? Conversion?

For me text always outperforms both, but I do use banners. And as long as they are above the fold and well placed and of reasonable size they seem to pull pretty consistent but low click throughs.

I'm a marketing consultant when I'm not Interenet marketing, so it is for a range of clients. That isn't the point though - I was only pointing out that so-called industry stanrad results are not necessarily indicative of the results you will see. More's the pity!

i think placement in relationship to content is more important than the actual size.
The more "in your face" the banner is, the higher the CTR.

As far as my experience goes, 336x280 is the best for blogs. This should be blended with the content. My friends have said the same.

When it comes to Adsense, I hear people saying that 336x280 is the best. But I don't have much experience with Adsense so I cannot comment about it.

Want better results? Make your banner ad appear as though it's a video. Saw that on a site the other day and thought, "Wow. Why didn't I think of that?"

      Hastily-assembled example attached.
