Can you monetize any niche?

here is my problem,

i have websites about poetry, writing, stories and etc. but i can not monetize them other then adsense. cpa and selling stuff doesn't convert well in this niche.

so i have the traffic but i can not make money from it. so should i just leave these sites and go for other niches?

thanks!

If you have traffic and Adsense, then that should be fine...
Adsense work well in each niche as long as you have traffic.

If you left this niche and went to another one, you're leaving money on the table. I'd suggest you keep AdSense.

cpa-money, when you say you have the traffic, what's the figure we're talking about?
Around how many visits do your site or sites get on a daily basis?
If you mean hundreds or thousands of visits per day, then, there's really a good traffic passing through your sites.

You got to find the hole of the net. Have you checked on Google Analytics about the keywords used by people before they found your site? Perhaps, your site is optimized with those keywords that people often use but they don't find what they're looking for on your site.

I think it's time to have someone evaluate your site's Google Analytics report.

Keep these sites. But, if you want to make a higher performing site choose a more commercial niche.

I think poetry is probably the hardest niche imaginable. Many poetry books only sell a few thousand copies at most, unless you're Maya Angelo or Shel Silverstein. Hard to get traffic to the site unless you're the reincarnation of Emily Dickinson. People just don't "get" poetry and the ones that do are few and far between.

I'd want to monetize them as an Amazon affiliate, myself. (And with some information products about writing, which I agree perhaps aren't going to have high conversion-rates.) It's not much, but I'd expect it to be better than AdSense.

Adsense is much better than you think. All depends on the niche of course and if advertisers are paying enough money per click to make your revenue per click respectable.

With amazon, you can probably give away free Kindle books on poetry or with poetry in it which will drop your cookie, then you'll get credit for any sales you've made from that cookie in 24 hours.

However, you'll have to sell a BAJILLION dollars worth of crap at amazon to make any commissions worthy of being excited about as they start at 4% and can go up to a whopping 8% after you sell hundreds of products.

Adsense is easy - you get traffic, a % of people click the ads, you get paid.

Adsense has been very good to me - much better than amazon. However I'm driving 7K+ visits per day to one of my sites with over 10K page views per day.

So with adsense, it's a volume game, unless you have sites about life insurance and health insurance.

However, with amazon it's a volume game as well. And you don't get paid unless you make the sale. Adsense is just on click.

I believe any niche can be profitable. I'd look into selling physical items (books, posters, pictures, bookmarks, etc) with your poems on it. Items would depend on your target market.

Take a close look at your top competition. How are they monetizing their sites? Are their earnings paying the bills or is it just weekend spending money? Are these sites the only ones they own or do they run a larger network of sites? These are all things you need to research before you go any further.

    Hi cpa-money,

I do agree that all niches can be profitable, but the exact amounts might vary greatly depending on the exact niche. Like what roblawrence mentioned, poetry is relatively hard to market, mainly because the demand and target market is pretty small as compared to other forms of literary works, i.e. novels, etc.

That being said, there probably is still room for hope. What I would suggest, apart from looking at your competitors, as mentioned by DubDubDubDot, is to focus on the target demographics of your target consumers. Understand how their purchasing habits, and their preferred modes of consumption or browsing. After that, tailor your products in those mediums.

You mentioned other forms of literary works apart from poetry. Writing short stories and novels are a much more marketable product than poetry, so I would recommend you perhaps focus on writing stories and novels, and then insert your poetry pieces at the front or at the end of the bool (provided the content is relevant to the main story). That way you can get your poetry work out there and be seen.

    All the best,
    -Hum

      Some valuable advice by Hum....
Another one - subscription sites concept might work as well, as if this this a niche and valuable content then consumers would be willing to pay for the content.

      Best of luck,

    How about selling poetry books?

Look at other poetry websites and see what they are doing.

You should try to better optimize your ads like solo ads or affiliate with poetry writers.

Your site can also be a way poetry writers promote their stuff.

I always give newbies the same advice when first starting out.

In the beginning, it's better to enter and market in the profitable niches.

Not the niches that you have a passion in, but the niches where you can MAKE MONEY.

I have to respectfully disagree with you on this one Malcom. Simply because entering a niche that makes a lot of money but doesn't appeal to you will make marketing it more and more blah, which equates to a loss of interest which equates to less marketing which inevitably equates to no money.

On the other hand, if you are in a niche that you are passionate about, that you have knowledge and experience in, that holds your interest, you won't soon consider it a chore and lose the desire or drive to market it.

      Make sense?

I personally feel that there are some niche markets where there are more buyers. I will tend to choose a niche market which is very competitive as this means that there are many buyers in the market. For your current market, I personally feel that you will need to have huge volume of traffic coming to your website so that you can earn good income from your website.

Since I will be doing the work anyway, I will choose a market where there are buyers and I will build a list with it. Just my 2 cents.

Any niche can be monetized with Adsense. Experiment with your placement of ads on the page. Another idea is to sell blog posts or pages to other site owners who may want reviews.

I think you should focus on more profitable niches like dating, MMO, etc so you can sell products in addition to adsense.
