I tried to look for the legality of a gif on your website.

I like using gifs on my blog. I know there are certain legalities for pictures, but are there any legalities with using a gif?

Thanks,
Dan

Whatever the legality, if the gif isn't watermarked (and you don't know site of origin), then you could probably safely use it without fear of legal repercussions. With that being said, make sure this is a widely shared gift, not one which is exclusive to a specific site.

I don't understand. GIF is just a format. Same as jpg, png, etc. All pictures are copyright protected no matter what format they are in. You cannot use any images unless you have purchased rights for them or get them from an open source creative commons.

But at the same time, these gifs have no copyrights most of the time. It's usually created from a gif maker site and posted anonymously.

Either way I doubt I will get into any legal troubles with gifs.

        Thanks for the responses.

That's great advice.... if you want to get sued!

All images (including gif's) are automatically copyrighted the moment they are created. If you did not create the image yourself, then you must get explicit permission from the copyright holder in order to (legally) use the image.
