Creating This Product

Hi everyone, I am creating my first product and I wanted your opinion of something.

Does it matter if I have an accent in my videos?

I lived in America for about a year (I was an exchange student in high school), so my English is fairly good. But I still have a small European accent, it is not strong and I talk nice and clear.

Do you think this will affect my product negatively?

I would like to know your opinion, thank you!

Btw, I am in the weight loss niche if that matters.

- Felix

What's your native language? You should target those in your native country instead of competing for a different audience. So lets say you're from France and you want to do a fitness product for women...you will want to target the French market and break it down into French women who wanna lose weight after pregnancy. You DON'T wanna make a product targeting Americans because that's not something you're familiar with, and so you shouldn't compete there. Too many people think they HAVE to target America for internet business. There's 180+ countries who have needs too. Get what I'm saying? So no, your accent is fine, AS LONG as you're targeting your native demographic. I'm not going to try competing with the German market just because I can kinda speak German!?

It doesn't matter, what matters is the content of your product and how are you able to communicate it.

    Hi Felix,

Just have a look around on this forum.

It's packed with many varieties of product creators from all
    over the world.

Don't think too long on this my friend.

You've taken action and created a product.

That's one of the hardest things for people to do.

Most never even get the plane of the ground.

Push on my friend you are at the right place to see evidence
that anyone in any country can launch a product and see some
    positive results.

    All the best
    Gavin

I recently reviewed a product by a Brit who sounds just like the lizard from the insurance commercials. I found it quite entertaining.

Some native English speakers have accents too. Sometimes so bad that I hardly understand them.
If in doubt I would always add a PDF transcription of the videos.
That way you kill two birds with one stone, you satisfy the people who rather read than watch videos and you provide the complete text of the video to people who may have trouble understanding your accent (at some points)

People will overlook a LOT if the info is good. Accents don't matter as long as you get the point across.

If the product works, if the videos are educative, you`ll get a lot of replies saying that you have a nice accent and that`s all.. I have an accent too, I`ve got a lot of comments saying that my accent is nice.

I don't mind accents at all as long as the words are clear. There are some New York accents I can't understand no matter how long I listen. The same is true of some US Southern accents. Just be sure people can understand your words.

Lots of examples of IM'ers with accents who have made video, audio products...as long as you can be understood and your information is good, it will not matter to 90%+ of your market.

That said, accent or not, video does take some practice and chops to get right...too long and boring means people will turn you off. Too wild and crazy, people will tune you out.

The trick with video is to deliver usable information to your audience in as concise and simply as you can...you don't have to cover every corner case, you can do that in follow-up videos, in a forum, etc...

Depends what country you are from. There is somebody here who has a very thick accent in her videos. I love her products but I can never sit through the videos that come with them (not needed to use the actual product!)

It won't matter. Good info is good info. Convey this via your videos and people will gladly return to see some of your old and new videos.

Some cause-oriented hackers recently hacked one of my websites. So I researched what they're about and then donated a large sum of money to the entity they hate the most.

The next time they hack one of my websites I'm going to donate DOUBLE.

As long as its not drunk Scottish or Irish you should be OK.

Note: I am a British citizen so making jokes about the Scotts or Irish is not racist, they make enough jokes about us English.

Hey, a foreign accent might even make your video more interesting. As long as you're clear and what you say is understandable, no one really cares. Just be authentically you; that's what counts.

It could actually go in your favor. Your voice will make your product unique and refreshing as long as your voice is understandable.

As long as you can be understood is the important point! One of my favourite product creators has a very thick East Euro accent, it makes no difference (it fact, it helps you stand out a bit).
