The Problem With Ioncubed Programs (PHP Apps / WordPress Plugins)

This is why i don't like ioncubed (encrypted) files (general php files / wordpress plugins):

Website currently under maintenance (Website2Backup App)

This is (or was) a backup app that i've used to do automatic / daily backups of some folders to DropBox / My Email account.

Now, as the site it's gone my app stopped working (seems that the app tried to connect with their site to validate the login info and as the site it's dead, it crashed).

If it wasn't ioncubed, i would be able to disable the login (would be doing it just to make the app "survive" for me) but now nothing can't be done.

App coders use IC to protect their source (i also have 1 WP plugin ioncubed) but the problem is that most of these apps stop working if something happens to their sites and Nothing can be done.

This is what i think i won't be buying a single Ioncubed app anymore (+ i'm also preparing to not using for my developments). Think of this if you're planning to buy a plugin that's protected this way.

Ioncube has nothing to do with your website not working. They just had a crappy licensing setup that couldn't recognize what was happening.

But if the code is obfuscated in any way, you have no way of knowing if the php code will stop working or blow up your whole website,

regardless whether it's due to crappy licensing or crappy coding or unscrupulous sellers.

    I'll detail....

    1. The App i've bought was Ioncubed (Encrypted source).
    2. The App was installed on my site.
    3. The app required (still requires) a license to work. I've entered it. The license was verified
online, against their site and it worked for over 1 year.
    4. Their site went offline.
    5. The app on my site seems to try to validate again...against a site that's Offline.

Result: The App on my site stopped working.

If the app Wasn't Ioncubed, i would be able to see it's PHP code and would disable
the login validation in 15 minutes. But as it's Ioncubed, it's dead.

Of course i'm not blaming Ioncube, just mentioning what could happen when you buy Ioncubed Apps as most vendors ioncube the login module (which usually validates account info against their sites).

Php Obfuscated code can be easily deobfuscated but as far as i know, it's not possible to do something similar with IonCube.

There is software that can do it, and there are fiverr gigs available to do it for you. I've never used them, and don't know their turnaround.

That being said, if the company had any indication that they would be closing their doors, they should have released a license-free version, regardless if it was ioncubed or not. I think it reflects more on the company/marketer than on the technology.

Take a look at Xcloner It's a free program that will do daily backups of any website, or selected databases/directories. There's a plugin version on the WordPress.org repository
