site speed when upgrading from shared hosting

If a site is taking 28 seconds to load on shared hosting what time range would you expect on the next step up? I know you can't be precise but I'm just looking to get an idea.

If you have shared hosting I would first optimize the site from plugins, caching, optimizing image sizes, and as far as condensing php and css files.

Next step would be CDNs/Cloud services.

Can you give more details on the site itself? Just because a site takes long to load, doesn't necessarily mean you need to upgrade - it could possibly be the host. We need more details..

This all depends upon your Website and what you decide the "next step up" actually is. Is it a semi-dedicated, VPS, or dedicated server? Also, why is your site running slowly right now? Is it really due to your hosting account or are you running slow plugins, for example? There are many considerations that must be addressed before answering your question. However, one thing is true: 28 seconds is way too long of a load time!

Are you absolutely sure the 28 second load time is (on average) the case with every visitor and not just your connection slowing down, maybe?

Beyond that, there's a lot of factors you could take into account before you go for an upgrade. You might not need an upgrade, just an optimization, possibly.

      rhinocl,

Try doing a speed test on pingdom: Website speed test

Depending on your location and your internet speed, it might be your computer adding a few seconds to the load time. 28secs is really really bad.

Also it may be your hosting service sucks like hell.

Its on shared hosting at Hostgator. It was running about 8 seconds which I felt was livible for a site heavy with images. Added just a few more menu items and a few posts with galleries whose images are a little large and it jumped. I think it's mostly HG although I shaved 4 seconds off it this morning. I did check it at WebPagetest - Website Performance and Optimization Test
I know there is more optimization I can do but I don't think I can get it down enough without upgrading or moving.
Strangely my own site at HG is as fast as it ever was though.

update:pingdom gave me 7.4 seconds -enormous difference from webpagetest.org
