Using "#1" in site title

I've seen a few sites use a variation of "#1" in their site title. Was wondering if anyone knows if it can increase ctr significantly in searches? It's not real common, but I see it enough to make me wonder if it's a strategy to use to stand out in a Google search or something.

However, it also seems more like a useless filler where you can be using stronger keywords instead and would probably be more effective if your already ranking in the first page or two. Any experiences?

I sometimes use # in my email broadcasts to avoid using $ and it has alittle better opening ratte that the plain text. I have not tried on SEO though.

They used to use that when the optimal keyword domain was unavailable as a way of getting the keywords they wanted in an EMD.

That's not such a popular tactic anymore. EMD's don't give much of a bump these days.

What would they use "#1" when the pound sign can't be used when registering domain name?
