Twitter Charging?

I've yet to seriously dive into marketing on Twitter, but I heard on CNN this morning that they're going to "start charging for some services" without really saying what those services were.

Will this kill a rapidly expanding marketing tool, or not make much difference? I suppose it's hard to say till we know what they are actually going to start charging for.

Anyone else heard anything on this?

    As much as I agree with those saying that Twitter will simply have to find a way of making money as soon as possible (the investors are not going to simply throw money at it forever), I am afraid that any kind of "paid accounts" might just drive users away to another really similar (free) service. It's not like there isn't a gazillion of "twitter clones" out there.

    It's not like they are going to start charging every user of their service. That would drive people away. They'll simply offer value added premium services that the majority of users will have no need to use and will not be affected by.

      They willl lose most everyone if they charge across the board. No way they would ever be that stupid.

      Like someone else mentioned... probably going to just go the premium service route.

      Never did figure out why they haven't put ads on that site. /shrug

    They will simply create tiers of additional services for the premium.

    It's like IM.. give your good stuff for free,and charge for the better stuff down the road.

    I don't think they're naive enough to not have considered this. It'll probably be monetised in a fairly smooth way giving people more options rather than less.

    They would be stupid to start charging, the whole reason people use tiwtter is because it is the latest fashion. Give it another year or so and they're popularity will fade.
