Hey everyone. I've spent hours (days) searching for the answer to this question with no such luck. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm trying to count the number of times that a link is clicked. Sounds simple? Apparently its not so easy...

The links that I am trying to track are cloaked and go to an external pages (I set up a directory with a 301 redirect).

I've tried event tracking but It doesn't seem to work well with the new universal analytics coding.

I've tried UTM parameters but this makes the hyperlinks ugly and doesn't seem to count all clicks.

I've tried google analytics plugin but this doesn't only seems to capture 1/2 the link clicks.

The only thing that I haven't tried is pretty links because I don't want to install any more plugins. In addition, I don't want to redo all of my cloaked links.

There's got to be an easy solution? I simply need to count the number of clicks without making my hyperlinks ugly. Any suggestions? Thanks.

WP Shorties is the plugin I use to cloak and count clicks.

Not sure what you could install that would count clicks if you don't want to redo all your current links but there are a few here that could be worth investigating.

Simple website logfiles will track all of this from your server. If the browser sends a HTTP referrer, then you'll have it. This is the more accurate way.

I use a link cloaker plugin from Wordpress for my tracking. Cloaks links and tracks the clicks that it gets.
I'm not sure what you mean by 301 redirect, but that's what I use!
