Graphics design is another option. People pay top dollar for professional banners and graphic advertising. Not hard to outsource but you'll want real samples from anyone you're thinking of hiring.

I think offering services in SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) can pay you well, most businesses want their websites rank on the top page of google. Do your own research and get a company that will pay you well as an affilliate.

In my opinion the easiest way to get started is to sell websites. Once you have done that you can upsell on the SEO services among other things.

Selling SEO can be a little harder to start with.

    I wish you luck.

Uh, excuse me sir...just one more question.

If I'm paying someone $1000 I'd like them to be an expert in that chosen field I'm paying them for.

There's been a plethora of great suggestions but we haven't had any confirmation that actress6 is a specialist in any of them.

And yes you can outsource things but that can only last for so long before you have a couple dimes left in your pocket.

So, actress6 I hope you have something that you are passionate about and reach your goal. But, only you can determine what that is.

That is how you think, but many people don't need to interact directly with the "expert" at something to be happy with the product.

In fact, most web agencies that sell in person to local businesses don't ever have their designers or developers meeting clients. Many of the salespeople and even owners of these companies can't do the work. They "outsource" it to their employees.

So sure she can sell a service and outsource it and make clients happy - it's pretty much what every web agency that hire designers, developers, and online marketers does. If you think you have to be an expert in something to successfully sell it then you are thinking too small.

Okay smart guy. So enlighten us on what exactly actress6 does for $1000.

Do you know? No you don't. How does she get her leads etc.

Don't know that either. Nope. Not an expert...ehh. But they have to have some kind of comprehension of what's going on in their business.

You like to make your customers "happy", you should be over delivering.

But, that's obviously where you're thinking too small.

        Bill

PS- Do you think the scenario in your post of agencies salespeople etc. is the reality of what's going on here.

        Wrong again smart guy.

        Yes it's true that she can be successful by simply outsourcing everything;
However, it would be wiser, and much safer, if she understand's her business inside-out, before handing over such important tasks to her outsourced staff.

I've had many times when one of my staff disappeared for a few days, for some unexpected reason. I was the one that picked up the slack for them, to keep the business running smoothly.

If she is selling websites, how will she know all the technical terms regarding website development? How can she effectively SELL a site to her clients, if she doesn't understand how the entire process works.

The best thing would be to be directly involved in as many steps of your business as possible, and understand it inside-out, while it grows.

YOU should be the one teaching and guiding your staff, on how everything should operate. You should mentor them, and they should learn from your experience in the business.

When your business becomes more stable and reputable, then you can start outsourcing more and more tasks to other people, putting less work on yourself.

Yeah, I agree with Bill. You have to be an expert in something to be able to offer your service in that something. No less. It's a must, simple as that. Become an expert on something that makes you excited and makes you want to learn and improve your knowledge and experience. You have to enjoy what you do.

Once you are an expert in one or few topics in your niche, you can do all sorts of things. Mainly you can teach and coach. Or create some incredible systems that would be helpful to people and will make you profits. Or learn to do something and scale it to produce great amount of help to people and great profits.

Where you would like to be? What your strengths are? What are you good at naturally? Have a think, you might find the answer where to lead your business.

Sounds like you have no idea what you're doing, but you want to make a lot of money doing nothing (outsourcing)...

You don't necessarily have to sell high-ticket services to make a good profit. Often times those people who sell things for $7-$10 make more than those who sell stuff for 50 bucks or more - simply because of volume.

    Hi,

I've tried to do that in the past but I quickly realized that it is a business model that is doomed to fail.

When the core of the business are not your strengths what happens is that you're at the mercy of the people that you hire. On odesk and elance, or other freelancing marketplaces, there is no loyalty because there is no work contract (I know because I used to work there).

If someone comes and pays me more to do the same work guess what, I'll leave your company and I'll work for the other guy.

This happened to me, I hired a developer for long time work and then at the middle of a project he was offered more money to work for someone else. He left the project and I had to refund the money to my client. Massive loss.

So like others have said, develop your skills first, allocate 30 days to study whatever you want to do and work on your portfolio. Then go and start marketing your new business.

You need to figure out what YOU can offer in terms of education, skills and talents, and then put it together as a package worth that price.

This site is blowing my mind. The more I read the more I'm getting excited about potential opportunities.

What would you suggest for a person with a technical support background? I'm very competent in desktop support and general technology solutions, but to date all I've done is worked for contracting companies. How can I leverage my ability in that area to go beyond just working for an hourly wage?

I've thought about creating a blog for helping people with tech related issues and then once the traffic is high enough, try to convert that into income. But outside of that I'm really not sure how to take advantage of what I know.

I'd love to be able to support myself and my family without leaving the house. I know it's probably possible, but I'm still a noob in IM. Any suggestions?

If you want to start a web design service, you need to try out designers from different outsourcers first. Try them out for a few projects before advertising your business.

Then learn and understand things about:

    1. PSD and CSS
    2. Converting PSD to html
    3. Converting them to CMS (joomla, wordpress, etc)

Once you know all of this you can now outsource the different parts of the
project. This can lower your cost as well.

Then upsell by learning how to do SEO, Social Media Marketing, Etc.

    Hope this helps

These services could be sold for that amount if you do it right.

      1. Fiction writing: With the current craze of Kindle, many people want to publish novels with their own on the cover. They are willing to pay top dollar for it. For example, you could charge $1000 Per 100 pages of A4. When you get the order, you then head over to Elance or Odesk and outsource the writing at a cheaper cost. But you must be organized and ready to manage the freelancers, because you may set deadlines and your outsource fails you.

      2. SEO: Webmasters are willing to pay that much to have their websites SEOd. There are white lable SEO companies (Just do a Google search for "white label SEO services") you could use to do all the work as you make your profit.

      3. Website design: Same as #2 above.

      4. Copy writing: If you can get a good copywriter, you can partner where you get clients at a higher cost and pay him/her their share and you keep the profit. With lots of products that need copy, you can get clients if you can position your self in their path.

I assume that you are going to be the go-to contact between suppliers and customers and that you are going to be the sales person.

You have to know something about what you're selling. Potential customers will ask you questions, and you need to know the answers. Web Design, Software Design, or App Design? The questions will be technical, so be prepared. How would you sell something technical to someone without answering the questions intelligently?

In addition, if you don't know anything about the product you are selling, it will be difficult to communicate accurate specs to the people you outsource to and you are more likely to get ripped off by those same people if you don't know anything about the products.

Offering such expensive service, you must be an expert on your chosen filed. Asking someone to Pay $1000 for a service that you want to outsource I think is not a stable business model.
