So much opportunity and so little time! How do you proceed?

Internet marketing is truly the creative minds playground. Millions of niche sites to be created, ebay drop shipping, selling ebooks through Amazon, affiliate marketing, and so many more options. Opportunity is truly abundant and we are all helping to build our generations great innovation like brick layers paving the first roads.

Anyway my question is how do you proceed in the face of so much opportunity? My personal method has been to label myself "CEO" of my current web property to encourage myself to put 100% of my focus on the task of building it into something great (instead of jumping from niche to niche as I have in the past with small successes.)

What's your personal strategy in the face of limitless possibility?

Try to find evergreen products that will pay a residual commission, but it is easier said than done and can get off to a slow start.

It's very tempting to take the quick cash of promoting the hottest trend, but they are usually short lived and don't provide a long term residual income. I wish I had put more effort into the residual income program I am in now when I first started. Every time a new shiny object came up I would put more effort into it because it was more fun and exciting. If I had kept putting my efforts into my first business I would be much better off.

Stay focused and master it whatever you are doing and once your heart feels you done enough then get out and dont get sucked in !

Move on to next game and play.

When years go by and you played many games focus on the best 3 and keep it stable growing it and becoming a true master and by having 3 will put your mind at ease as greed will bring destrction. so 3 is the way for me.

    My IM life story !

Just gave you my real secret away.

    Your welcome.

    peace.

I have been jumping from one initiative to other, some of them were quite rewarding but when you have many of them going on it is difficult to build something good quality and long lasting so lately I am focusing on building product and branding and hopefully with time it will be my only and main business.

I try to set ridiculous goals for myself and then comparmentalize these into smaller ridiculous goals. Example:

      - In 4 months I'm going to completely dominate abc niche
      - In one month, I'll have all the backlink resources to rank my sites
      - In two weeks I'm going to have 4 different websites serving different keywords in the niche
      - In one week I'll have all my keyword research done.

You should pick the method you see ourself enjoying more than the others. (That doesnt mean you HAVE to enjoy it though) just make sure you get it done.

Yes like you said there is so much you can do in IM, so many niches, and most of the times people get distracted and strayed
So instead reading a lot .. First think about anything you are expert and see if you can sell it,
Use it primary source of income to fund your main projects, this kind of strategy really works out

    Dear Net Junkie

Just read again the post of Traffic Outlet.

I totally agree, it is all about choosing the right niche, the right strategy and master it.

Easier said than done but that is where you and your focus come into play.

    In short:

    1. Focus
    2. Get a mentor (if you were learning guitar and were getting advice from a professional guitar player how much time you think you saved than figuring it all yourself ?)

    Best of luck

I always hear other marketers recommending blogger mentors for newbies. Would you mind explaining the concept and how one would go about finding a mentor.

        Well the best is:

        1. Try and decide for a way and niche to make it online.
        2. Well I apologize I actually said mentor but meant coach. So basically someone from that is already doing what you are doing but has more experience
        3. For exemple first time at a job there are people that know the some of the tasks you will need to do and by showing or advising you, this is making it easier for you to quickly master the new task - perhaps if you tried by yourself you could be months before knowing that actually there was a easier way...
        4. Finding one is up to you - if you start researching in niche that you have interested you will find one if you have the right atitude

        All the best

I divide my day into two. The first part I spend doing something that is guaranteed to bring in money - freelance writing in my case. The other part I spend trying out all those different things hoping one will make me rich one day... So far not much luck with that, but the writing part still keeps me and my family alive

    2 quick tips:

    - Find ways to "replace" yourself: Buy tools that save you time, Outsource repetitive things.

    - Track Everything (Know where your traffic / sales are coming from etc). Without this, you'll be wasting lot of time (and money).

I proceed by simply *choosing* the game I
wish to play; and mastering it.

I realize when playing any game, I can only
    play *one at a time*.

I can't, for example, play a game of chess
and checkers at the same time.

Technically, I could, but eventually you find
yourself 'stressed' and 'incapable' of enjoying
    the games you play.

I can love playing both, but I only play one
    at a time.

So it is so with the game of marketing, sales
    and entrepreneurship.

I made the decision to write (freelancing and
    blogging) and trade.

I'm only ever doing just ONE at a time for the
    ultimate pleasure of doing it.

The moment you start 'multi-tasking' trying
to get multiple things done at once, you're
    no longer enjoying the game...

    ...you're loathing it.

It became a job. It became work. It's not fun.

    So you fail.

Choose one game to play. Focus on it. And
be sure it's a game YOU want to play and it's
not about the money at all.

For mastery of the game you LOVE attracts
    money anyway.

But you are forgetting that women are so good at multi-tasking It is no problem for me to write an article, play online poker, watch TV and build links to my sites at the same time... At least I don't get bored of playing the same game all the time..

I related internet marketing to learning a sport. You can practice basketball, soccer, and tennis everyday but are you going to be better than the guy who chooses one sport and dominates that sport?

Why was Michael Jordan so good at basketball? Because he spent most of his day practicing basketball. He didn't care about knowing how to play other sports or anything else, he wanted to master the game of basketball and he knew that one day he would be successful because of his unshakable work ethic.

He did take a break from basketball to pursue a career in baseball but he brought the same attitude with him. When he was playing baseball that was the only thing he would do. He was not playing any other sports.

So, I applied this same mindset to internet marketing and you should do the same.

I knew that if I chose one method and practiced that every day the odds would be in my favor to become successful at some point. There was no guarantee how fast I would be successful but just by focusing on one thing I increased my chance of success and the speed of reaching that success.

Like many have said above...pick one method and try and master it. Think of a football (soccer) player who gets referred to as a "utility" player. He's good at playing in most outfield positions but he's not the best in any of those positions......you usually find such players on the substitutes bench.

Pick one method of making money and 2 or maybe 3 traffic sources to begin with and don't move onto other methods until you have them nailed down (easier said than done)

netjunkie you are so lucky to start off with some excellent advice from everyone above.

When I started out I was in a mess jumping from 1 thing to another and was information overloaded but you have done a wise thing making this thread.

Like majority are saying > focus and master 1 thing then move on.

    All the best to you.

    Peace.

The hardest thing is using all that AWESOME stuff you read or heard about and utilizing "pieces" of those things and to help your business in some way.

Every business is different ... but “Thinking is like a rocking chair: it gives you something to do but never gets you anywhere”

Anyways that my 2cents ... interesting thread thanks NetJunkie913
