Using "Google" in a domain name?

I always thought it was a massive no-no, but have found a decent number of pages with phrases like "googleadsincome", "googlewealth", "makemoneywithgoogle" and my personal favorite, the increadibly cheaky www.google-clickbank.something!

Even Wiki Answers has a page called ://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_does_Google_make_money

Could Google shut any/all of these sites down? And if so why haven't they so far?

Using a Trademark (that you don't own) in a domain name is always risky. Many Trademark owners will use legal action, others don't care. Google doesn't seem to care, but as soon as you start realizing success with that site, they will begin to take notice. They have the legal right to sue you for profits earned since the domain was in use.

Thanks Gene, that's what I thought, it just crossed my mind that the infamous clickbank product that claims to tell how to get free google ads used "google" in the domain name...

I just assumed that google would be a little bit harder on them

Many site flippers are making similar mistakes by storing their creations under a potentially risky trademark umbrella (twitter-, craigslist-, google-, etc-variations...)
For me, it has always been a BIG NO-NO!

Last time I checked google owned over 3,000 domain names and most of those came from others that registered the names. Google just took them.. Perosnally I would not risk it..

Here is a site that say 500+ but they own more than that ...

  • It is risky, but they often don't take any notice is my experience. Think about all the products with "clickbank", "google" and "adwords" in their name. It's obviously best to avoid but sometimes you just can't help it... (owner of googlesniper.com)

The ironic thing is that if you're running makemoneywithgoogle.com or whatever, you're probably sending them lots of customers if you have half a clue what you're doing. Coming after you just shoots them in the foot. - Not that it hasn't been done before.
