Making money with information sites

Hi, i have a question and i would like to hear from you people with "actual experience" not what you have read or heard but what you have done yourself and succeeded or failed or both.

I know that there are people out there making money blogging and providing information, but the way i see it is that you have to be a certain type of person to actually really be a successful blogger, and make a nice living doing it, i might be wrong but it doesn't matter.

My question is if i can make really nice money with a informational website not in a blogging style, but simply lets say i do some research on a problem people have and i put up a site with helpful info. and tips and i lets say also promote a clickbank product at the end.

Lets not go in here into the finding the right niche or how to promote the product or how to get it to rank high, the question is in general on the concept of a information website not in a blogging style meaning its not in an engaging manner not connecting with the readers just putting the information out there that will help people with this problem, and promoting to them a relevant product, do you guys make money and i mean like 5k 10k a month from such kind of sites?

I have sites that are build around products and also sites that are "engaging". Both types make me money, but from what I've seen "engagement" pays in the long run - it could be social media engagement (encouraging people to share your stuff on social media sites) or simple comments - they help establish trust and give long term profits.

    • You are on the right path but wrong mindset.

This is my honest opinion from people who makes 1000-100000 a month. You need to have a structure properly laid out where you are focusing on helping people (like what Im doin for you) get answers not just sales pitching.

You can have 100K +subscribers but if theyre cold and non responsive its a waste of my time. I would trade 1 responsive highly committed lead for that 100K dead leads. Also those dead leads are not necessarily dead leads if you offer them a solution to their problem. Which is where a funded proposal is important.

I have my primary business that will give me commission from 1K -5K and I have my lower ticket high value products as well to build the confidence of the people that says "NO" to my primary business partnership. Some people have different levels of faith or risk taking than others.

You may also think that selling low ticket is the way to go because people can afford it right? Well if you buy a burger from mcdonalds for 5$ and you buy a burger from fine dining restaurant for $50 how much McDonalds burger do you need to sell if you chose not to sell the $50 burger? Let's say your competiton sells only 4-5 a month of expensive burgers? Thats $250 in sales. You would need to sell 50 burgers.

Remember there are different types of people out there who wants that burger badly enough and willing to pay for the price because they see the value of it.

Which brings to my point that if you have a list that you have good relations and responsive even if they only want the Mckdonalds burger sooner or later they will see the value of eating a Real nutritious delicious burger.

I hope my analogy did not make you hungry coz it did for me lol

Well, you have probability to earn that much mon y but you really have to provide people good information they really need. By it can be a slow process and you have to keep working on your site for a he y long time.

So you want to do some basic research on a topic, rewrite the content in your own words for your site, never update it again and make $60,000 - $120,000 per year from said site.

If it sounds too good to be true.....

  • Something automated like that is a small fraction of my fitness site where i need tons of subscription because the solutions will be generic by nature and not organic because of it being only predone info and not engaging.
Like my fitness site you can make a descent coin after a long time and after you have proven yourself as a credible source. For me i have to compete in bodybuilding, marathons, certificates achievement, just to impress the audience.

Either or you will have to have some recognition or also engage the audience for a larger price. I charge 300$ for one hour coaching .

Summary: it will take 60 subscriptions to beat my one hour session thats for sure!

I think you are overthinking things. You say you mean a site that isn't a blog but then you give examples of people who have a bunch of niche blogs and say it is exactly what you are talking about.

Both the examples you show are guys making niche blogs.

So are you talking more about your style of writing rather than the design of the blog?

Historically a 'blog' meant 'personal website' such as a mommy blog or tech blog where the 'voice' of the blog is the owner/writer.

Due to the power and flexibility of Wordpress, the original blogging platform, a blog can look very different from a chronological diary.

But many people still call review sites and information sites 'blogs', especially when built on Wordpress.

So it isn't clear what you mean when you say 'informational site that isn't a blog'.

For example, would you consider 'Lifehacker' a 'blog' or an informational site like you are talking about?

In general, if you mean small niche sites like those you referenced then, yes, they can still make money.

Note that even in 2010 these guys need 100+ niche sites to find a few winners.

The most important thing is your niche and keyword selection. You want low competition on the keywords so you can rank but they need to be keywords people are actually searching for and buying in to make money.

I would check out the Niche Pursuits blog for detailed case studies.

Yes you can but their are 2 versions you can implement. Small niche website where you approach 1 problem or larger sites were you approach multiple problems. Here is a case study

I had a network of 12 blogs dedicated to a particular niche with commissions of $10/sale. Each blog had about 10 Long 100% original, informative, engaging articles with aggressive on page + off-page SEO.

(These are not typical blogs where I posted on a regular basis, far from it - I only had 5-10 articles on each published at one go.)

On good months I've made as much as $12,000 .. and about 3K on the last couple of months before I sold it to the merchant.

Depending on the SIZE of your niche, your traffic strategies, offers, speed of optimization will determine how much you can make. You can setup 100s of websites like this - but don't make the mistake of depending on a single traffic source.

I make a living with information - I would NEVER build a business without engagement...sites - sure...but "engaged" traffic is sent to those sites which converts far, far higher than non-engaged traffic.

Here's another thought - and not only for the benefit of the OP, but anyone reading this thread:

Information sites (not blogs) may also be about professional advice e.g. legal niche, or technical info e.g. aircraft construction niche and for those searching online for a solution to their particular problem an info site like this could be precisely what they want and need to ease their pain, and buyers might pay handsomely for articles/reports/guides/manuals/videos/webinars etc etc which provide that information.

The OP refers to making 5k+ per month purely on affiliate sales which, imho, would be a challenge. However, I believe a site like this could provide regular income of $5k+ per month, ONLY IF there is a sufficent demand for what is on offer. But there is a big enough market out there to keep the physical businesses running profitably, despite their overheads, so there IS enough demand for real niche IMers to exploit, if the information and offer is right.

Bear in mind that professionals charge per hour, anything from $50 per hour upwards, (easily $300-$400 PER HOUR for experts) and to provide clear, concise, quality 'DIY study' type niche material which saves buyers paying for expert's advice it wouldn't take many sales to get to the income level that has been mentioned. A few sales per month could easily achieve this.

This is the 'high-ticket' end of the range and the sales page and buying process should reflect this, and of course the 'product' must be great quality and the accuracy and depth of the information must still represent value to the buyer. To the OP I would say 'yes, it is possible' - but not for anyone or everyone. It is the individual's choice.

Setting up an info site is easy, but in the long run, it won't make you a lot of money. People go to blogs because they trust them, not just for information.

So, in the long run, if you want to make even near your desired amount, I doubt that info-only site without engaging users that trust you would produce any real money.

I have an information site, not in a blog template. People crave information. They buy relevant products based on that information.
However unlike your intentions I do encourage user engagement. I want contact, I want comments. Why? Keeps them coming back, sharing info with their friends. Helps me to update with better information and content, increasing the overall user experience.

I hired a team here on the Warrior Forum to make be info sites that make money from Adsense or Aff sales. They made 7 sites on different subjects. The content was written well.

They ran away with the money and not do SEO for the sites.

I hired another company to the SEO. They did something wrong and my sites got slapped by Google.

So, I did not make any money doing that. The team I hired had many positive reviews. Provably paid reviews.
