Nulled Scripts & Pirated Plugins: Are They Worth It?

Before you go downloading nulled versions of paid plugins from the web, just remember this...

The guys who "nulled" the script (a.k.a. broke the code encryption that the plugin developer may have done to protect their code) is not doing it necessarily as a "us vs them" or "take that you greedy developers who charge for your plugins". It's not a Robin-hood style attempt to take from the "rich" and give to the "poor".

I've myself witnessed this over and over again on others' web sites. If you use a nulled script, the script soon starts broadcasting: "Calling all hackers - Hear Ye, Hear Ye! Come checkout this vulnerable WordPress site". Soon the hackers come calling with their baddest of intentions, and you can guess what happens next to your web site: Bad, bad things.

Here is a great article that goes into the aftermath of using a nulled script or plugin, and the real reason why most scripts are nulled. Like the adware/malware that comes with free .exe downloads.

good point, Ravi, like cracked software loaded with trojans...I would expect many nulled scripts to have "backdoors" also coded in them for identity theft and wp hacks. and no dev support. always buy retail from original producers, 100% of the time. good article; thanks... esp. point re password leaks/spam/backdoors being hidden in obfuscated code.

And the funny thing is, one person who had been using a nulled version of our plugin actually blamed us when their site got hacked and pr0n links were splashed all over the web site.

And only upon further investigation did the person reluctantly reveal that they had actually bought our plugin online from someone claiming to sell them a "developer's license".

Some would call that "poetic justice" ;-)

It really depends on what you use that plugin for and how much do you trust the "nuller". I know it`s not a really popular thing to say here, but some plugins are really high priced for what they actually do.

This raises some interesting morality questions.

That's like saying "Stealing cars is OK, but depends on where you would drive that car to, and how much you will trust the car jacker."

Just because, say, a BMW is expensive, and maybe costs too much for what a car actually does (basically take you from one place to another) and maybe one doesn't wish to pay for it - does that mean it's OK to steal someone else's car?

I'm sure no one thinks stealing cars is OK. So why then is it OK to steal when it comes to software? Just because something is digital does not make stealing acceptable - or legal - regardless of how good (or bad) one thinks the product is, or whether the software developer is overcharging for it :-)

No matter what anyone tells themselves, whether they steal a penny from a cash counter, or download "expensive" pirated software - it's still considered stealing :-)
