Difference Between 'Module' and 'Chapter'?

I'm planning to build a website which will be packed full of 10,000 word guides on a specific topic and I'm wondering whether or not to call each section in the guides 'Modules' or 'Chapters'.

I'm leaning towards using 'modules' as I want these guides to be very informative and how-to (although some guides won't be as how-to as others) - but I'm not sure if it's being used in the right context.

May sound a bit of a simple question for some.

Normally a simple Google search would give me a definite answer but not this time.

Here is the definition from Google of Module:

'each of a set of standardized parts or independent units that can be used to construct a more complex structure, such as an item of furniture or a building.'

and the definition of a Chapter:

a main division of a book, typically with a number or title.


What are thoughts??

Should I use 'Modules' or should I use 'Chapters'?

    It is up to you. They could be pretty much interchangeable depending on context.

    Also, how do you break down subsections?

    You could have 4 Modules with 6 Chapters in each module.

    Or you could have 4 Chapters with 6 Modules in each chapter.

    Chapters are (usually) more indicative of a book or written report broken into sections.

    "Modules" could be used interchangeably with "Chapters" but may be more flexible and not tied to a written book or report.

    Many courses are broken into modules which could include books, videos and classroom instruction.

    Also Chapters are parts of a whole whereas Modules could stand on their own.

    If a course was 4 Chapters you would expect all those chapters to be contained in one unit.

    But if a course was 4 Modules it is possible they could be 4 individual courses taken separately but related in subject or build on each other to a 'certification' after all moduels are complete.

      I think I might end up going with the Module idea as it gives a more learning and classroom feel which is the angle I'm taking with the site.

        I would normally associate chapters with a book, and modules to do with segmwnts of a learning product, so I'd go with modules!

    Module does not have mainstream use. It's pretty much limited to snake oil info products. I would stick with chapter, section or part.

      Totally unscientific and arbitrary, but for some reason I tend to think a "module" has an audio/video component in it, whereas "chapter" makes me think text.
