If you go to search in wp new plugins search for security there are many.

  along with wordpress plugin's, you have to change the .htaccess file at the root folder of the site. Contact your hosting provider on how to change it and what content to put in to prevent the brute attacks ( you have to edit it from your cpanel -> file manager )

And if you haven't already done so, change the default admin name from admin to something else, change the user setting for admin so it doesn't post the admin name on posts and use a good (random) password.

I prefer iThemes and 2nd WordFence.
However don't install more then 1 security plugin that defeats the purpose.

Also biggest issue is to keep everything up-to-date and don't use weak passwords.

  Also understand that more content means the need for more frequent backups and better security. Don't go through 10 hours of work to secure a 2 page non money site. Back it up off site and have your host erase your site if it gets compromised. Then just reload from your backup.

Not seen the various plugins mentioned but if they don't lock out potential hackers after a fixed number of failed login attempts then install the Limit Login Attempts plugin as well.

Terry, there are a bunch of different things that you should be doing to secure a WordPress site. Everything from change username, security plugins, automatic monitoring of files. The best wordpress security is to NOT use wordpress. With so many creators of plugins, your security holes are never ending.

  I'm starting to believe in this more and more. I'm slowly converting all non-blog websites to good 'ole HTML.
  
  For the blogs, I'm using Incapsula (courtesy of Veerotech hosting) to secure my blogs before the malicious bots ever make it to WordPress. It's working great so far.
