Anyone else having trouble with HostGator?

Hi Guys and Gals,

I supply the members of my club with free web hosting. And, because reliability of service is paramount - and in view of the well publicized problems with HostGator, since their purchase by Endurance International - I've now moved my member's hosting elsewhere.

And so, for the past three days or so, I have been trying to get HostGator to cancel my hosting account.

They insist on clients wishing to cancel to go to their cancellation website and complete a cancellation request.

So far so good - only ...

It's not working properly and won't register the cancellation request.

I've tried to do this five times over the last three days - all with the same negative result.

Now, given that HostGator are essentially a savvy tech outfit, I wouldn't have thought it was beyond them to fix this glitch.

But no.

So, I'm in the Catch 22 situation that they won't cancel my account without this form being filled in and I can't fill the form in cuz it don't work!

I've sent several tickets telling them about this and confirming my wish to cancel and all I've had back is a lame response saying they can't trace my cancellation request.

So it seems that Endurance International are so busted flat for cash that they are delaying my cancellation so they can take another month's hosting payment, which is now due tomorrow.

Meantime, I see websites everywhere enthusiastically advertising HostGator and Blue Host (another of EI's hosting companies), despite their shortcomings.

So I make this post not to gain sympathy (I'm big enough to look after myself), but to warn off any newbie Warrior thinking of signing up for HostGator web hosting.

A few months ago, I was their most enthusiastic advocate . But no longer.

Paul

why not just move your domain to another webhost

get your new webhost to move everything for you

and then cancel your hostgator account

Yes, that's exactly what I've done. It's just what you would think would be the easy bit - cancelling the account - that's the problem.

You are BRILLIANT ... it worked!

The reason why I never thought it was my browser (Morzilla) was because I'd successfully canceled my own personal hosting without any problem. So it's odd that the same web site was so fickle.

Anyway, thanks again for the suggestion.

      Warmest regards,

Also have you tried calling them directly instead of dealing with them through email?

I have a fantastic solution.. I keep this bogus broke prepaid credit card for companies just like that. Just update your billing card with them and let it go into a never ending cycle of declining.. then flag all their billing emails for the next 6 months as a way of saying "Thank You" for not taking care of your customers.

Pleased to hear you sorted it out, Paul.

(He's no mug, that Garrie ... just sayin').

I've always been very happy with Hostgator, and over the last few months, I gradually see this ever-increasing tide of unhappiness with them, problems with them, warnings about them, and so on. And I'm thinking that sooner or later I should probably switch those sites over to another host (which I'm hoping "another host" will do for me, if I'm very lucky and pre-pay for a year or two, or whatever?).

        It's worrying.

Good luck with your new hosting company!

Good grief...nice hit and run sig advertisement!

I purchased my first domain in 1996 and was a GoDaddy domain services and hosting reseller for almost 10 years --> even I learned NOT to buy their hosting. I still have tons of domains registered with GoDaddy...but I gave up on their hosting years ago when I saw tiny database driven sites slow to a crawl on some of their shared servers

I am sure some folks have had good luck with GoDaddy hosting --> but it most certainly was not me.

I have been with Hostdime for more than 12 years and I currently have two dedicated boxes with them that my money sites are on.

I also have 40-50 domains on a couple of Hostgator shared accounts, and while I have not seen any major issues, I do notice some slower than "normal" load times on one of the servers.

I love the speed and convenience of my manged dedicated servers and I am seriously considering moving all of my Hostgator accounts over to one of my Hostdime boxes within the next month or two.

      Cheers

      -don

Hostgator is great. I can't see the reason why you can just pick up the phone and call them when you have an issue.

I'm glad it's all worked out, I'm still hanging with Hostgator. Great customer service.

I am, for now, but less confidently and thinking about leaving.

Traditionally, yes. But certainly much slower now. And many people seem to have problems, these days, with their customer support ... (all in complete contrast to a year or two ago, but the changes do seem rather noticeable, and fairly widely observed, too?).

Yes, it's sad: Hostgator used to be the tops and I'd been with them for ten years. But, since being bought out, they've migrated many of the web sites from their bullet-proof servers in Houston to other servers in other locations.

And, in my case, many of my own personal sites were messed up in the process.

So my overriding concern was to move all my member's web sites before they too suffered the same fate.

Anyway, on a brighter footnote ...

Five minutes after my getting their cancellation notice to work, they emailed to say they had canceled the account. However, it would have been nicer if they had attempted to have been a little more helpful, sooner.

As it is, it was Warriors to the rescue.

So, thanks everyone for your interest and suggestions - particularly Garrie!
