Small Niche or Large, Where Should a Newbie Start?

2000 posts and you haven't ridden me out on a rail (yet)!

I see this debated a lot.

I believe it's easier and better for newbies to try to dominate a small niche(s) vs trying to compete with "the big boys."

This is for first time niche selection.

Opinions please!

Thanks for reading.

I think it's extremely hard to get a good, unbiased answer to this question.

One example from one area follows but there are many, many more like it.

Many of the people saying the MMO market is too hard, too competitive, etc. are...brace yourself...in the MMO game themselves.

Furthermore many of the current "gurus" have NEVER sold one thing online to any other market. They never had a "weight loss for post menopausal African-American women" product. Their first product was in the MMO arena.

So now why do they say that that's the kind of site/product newbies should develop versus a MMO product?

Is it because they are broke and have lost bunches of money and they are trying to save their fellowman from making the same mistakes they did out of the goodness and charity of their heart? I doubt it.

Is it because there is more money in "teaching yellow parakeets to sing the Star Spangled Banner"? If it was then why don't they go do that?

Is it because there is too much competition? Yes - including with them. No one would encourage direct competition that may hurt themselves and their families.

Is it because the newbie needs to get experience in other niches/markets first so that they can learn the ropes and get rich that way? If that was the case then why didn't they do it?

And it's like many of the other niches/markets don't need experience. For example, John can't ethically sell a MMO product unless he's making 5 figures a month for 2 years some may say. But he can sell a weight loss book, dating book, home improvement book, public speaking book, etc. with doing the right research and outsourcing. A double standard if you ask me.

Furthermore many of these people suggesting anything other than MMO sell MMO PLR, software or ads or whatever that work best with MMO so it's kind of a mixed message to a newbie.

I'm not saying people should or shouldn't start anywhere. I'm saying it's hard to get an unbiased opinion. Imagine going into a new town and telling the local car dealer you wanted to open a new car lot and you were wondering how the market was? Betcha the local dealer will not say much of anything to encourage competition. They aren't going to say - "man there is so much money here. Sure come on over, open your new lot and take some of it from me."

    Mark,

That's an awfully long post that makes very little sense.

    Or maybe I'm missing something?

It made a lot of sense to me... in fact, it was very good advice.

    Sorry for my nonsensical rambling.

Point is it's hard to get a unbiased answer because many people that make a recommendation like this have underlying motivations that may or may not be in the best interest of the newbie.

For example, If I sell MMO PLR in the IM space (a huge niche/market) then I may want everyone possible to get in this space so they can buy my PLR so my vote would be to go where the money is and the money is in huge niches such as MMO. My motivation isn't whether a big niche is good or bad for the newbie but padding my own pockets.

Likewise if I am making big bucks in a big niche, let's say weight loss, I may recommend that people stick to a small niche such as parakeet training because I don't want another competitor.

    Hey Brent

I completely agree with you. I feel it would be the best choice for a newbie to start out in a small niche rather than a larger niche. Larger niches, in my opinion, tend to have many distractions for the newbie to focus on one idea at a time.

    Hope my input helped out!

The larger the niche the means there is much more money to make. It doesn't matter in my opinion based on my experience what niche it is. I am in probably the biggest niches in the industry which is MMO and Fitness. And when I started I was a complete newbie and no techie as well.

But what made my success was having a good coach who has had success that guided me AWAY from his mistakes when he started and spend my work time much more efficient by not reinventing the wheel of success by proven systems that worked for him and other 6 figure earners.

The rest of the way to the top was sheer backbone with complete disregard from fear and procrastination.

Lots of trial and error to see what works and what doesn't

There is plenty of fish in the sea of large niches and not to mention it is evergreen and will never dry out because people no matter what age will always want to learn how to make money online.

It's best to start in a small niche if you can. However, if your area of expertise is in a larger niche -- go for that.
