  I was receiving about 50 spam comments/registrations on my blog everyday, once I ranked it, until I installed:The Stop Spammers Plugin.
  
  This plugin is awesome because it uses several different methods to stop both registration, and comment spam to your website.

Akismet is very good but it's not enough sometimes. You may use one of the captcha plugins to protect your website from spams.

Get a security plugin so you can ban ips that spam you. Then just add a captcha form through the security plugin. That seems to stop most of it for me.

  I use WP captcha free. It will block spam without having to resort to captcha.

You may want to consider installing the Disqus plugin. This plugin will "force" anyone who would like to comment to login to the social media account for him or her to comment to your blog posts. If the person doesn't login to his or her social media account, he or she won't be able to comment.

I am using this to my personal website. It's been almost a year now and I haven't received any irrelevant comment so far.

What's the niche of your website? Is it in the health or finance niche? Websites on that niche are getting lots of spams from linkbuilders.

  I see. Well, maybe your website's domain authority and PageRank are good that's why those spammers can't stop trying to their luck to get their spam comments approved by you.
  
  Better yet, give them some legit options. Create a page that contains the details on how one can submit a guest post on your site. That's a free article for you and free links for them. But, of course, set some quality guidelines on what type of articles you only accept. You don't want your site to be penalized just because of irrelevant articles.

Akismet is not great in my opinion. The 'smart' spam bots evade it and depending on the volume you can still get a ton of spam posts.

One of my favorite plugins, to use in addition to Akismet is this one:

WordPress › Stop Spammers « WordPress Plugins

For web host spammers, like quadranet, I also IP ban their entire ranges.

I use Akismet and I have been very pleased with it. I can not think of anything that I do not like and it is does very well at catching spam. In my opinion you can not go wrong with Akismet. If I can be of further help let me know.

add acaptcha to your login, registrations and comment pages. which will drastically reduce spam from your site.

Comment Spam is a big problem, more so for popular websites with traffic, There really is no 100 percent method of blocking ALL SPAM, having said that there are some really great methods of reducing the amount of spam.

I know everyone believes that Akismet is the answer but the truth is the problem should be stopped before the spammer ever gets to your comment submission form.

When I started uninstalling Akismet I actually saw spam posts go down...

(to be fair I do use a custom solution so I really do not need or want Akismet)

I have been testing this out for weeks and only a handful of spam comments have even made it to my inbox.

let us know how it goes, would love to hear how effective other plugins and methods are.
