Hi everyone, I would like to get started in website design - specifically for horse farms and those in the horse industry. Can someone guide me in a good direction of how I can get started in web design? I have dabbled a little in wordpress over the last several months and have made some simple websites but have never tried Photoshop or Dreamweaver. I'm not sure how people create such cool graphics for their headers -whether they use Photoshop or some other type of program.

I purchased Artisteer and have been using that to create some websites on wordpress.

Any advice would be much appreciated. I know a lot about the horse industry and a little about computers so I thought this may be a good way to do something that I would enjoy outside of my day job. I know a lot of people offline who could use a good website and know a lot of places I could go to showcase my work once I have a portfolio.

Thanks

    Hi,
Well, you would need to learn about web designing first. I suggest learning html and then css. Good source of information would be w3schools.com although a lot of people says they use bad practice (i disagree)
tizag.com is my absolute favorite place to learn so i definitely recommend that.

do you already have clients? if you do what you can do is find some cheap designer to code it for you.. then you just pocket the difference.. i hope that helps

For header design, you can go to istockphoto and pay $1 to get a photo, then use the xheader, which is FREE, to create a header. For wordpress website design, may be you can consider to invest a theme so to save your time. I use Studiopress.

      Good luck!

        Hi there,

This may help you, if not,no problem.
I have a link to a free eBook in my sig which will take you from blank page to multi page website in one day. It is a complete step by step guide with all the resources needed listed. The book has been used by some warriors before and they seem to like it.

        Regards,

        Mike.

I use Serif WebPlus X2 for some of my sites. Easy to use and costs £49.99 (search for a coupon to enter at checkout.)

Its price means that clients who want to maintain their own site aren't put off by the price.

I just checked out the website you made... very nice. I too have started to get into my first website, through the download from Chris Ferrell, it's fun but must put more time into it.

What do you think of the membership site... I think I should join. I think Chris in the genuine goods.

What is the newest version of Dreamweaver? Is this something I can buy online? Or should I try the local Best Buy?

            Thanks!

    Hi there,

Wordpress is a great platform for you to use to get started with creating your own website. There are plenty of themes that you can purchase or get for free and then customize them on your own.

What I would recommend is that if you wish to come up with a customized design, you can just download a simple free wordpress theme (please take note of the licenses that come with the themes) that allows you to customize elements of the theme.

Then use Adobe Photoshop to help you get started with creating your desired design. You can make use of Dreamweaver to help you to edit the CSS codes of the theme too. Do remember to take note of the dimensions of the various components of the theme so that you won't have problems with replacing the original images with your own design.

Dreamweaver is the easiest to use.

I have been using it for years and have never found anything better.

You don't necessarily have to learn all this stuff just because you want to write about the horse industry. Learning web development and design takes a lot of time and effort. Some stuff is not even doable if you don't have the talent(mainly design). Stick with wordpress if all you want is to have a website up and running.

Now if you want to learn take a look at delicious.org for tutorials, cheatsheets and online references:

As for Dreamweaver, Adobe offers free trials on their website:

    Good luck,
