I saw this little article this morning about what Gmail is now doing Gmail's Unsubscribe Button Could Be a Huge Blow to Email Marketers | Adweek

Your thoughts?

I'm not sure if this will be such a dramatic change for email marketers. If people want to unsubscribe now they can also do so with one click (well maybe 2)...

If people don't want to be on your list, what would be the point in keeping them?

I think the promo tab they introduced was worse than this change.

    The sky isn't falling.

The Promotion tab was supposed to kill email marketing. Hasn't yet that I've noticed.

Besides, if someone wanted off of one of my lists, I'd much rather they hit the Unsubscribe button than the spam button.

The likely effect is that a lot of people will moan and whine about how evil Google is and how they hate marketers, then the smart people will figure out a way to deal with it and move on...

So many marketers fear that unsubscribe button but should be embracing it as the best friend as it's really the way to tell the difference between a truly interested subscriber and one who would never really buy anything. If someone is taking the time to unsubscribe then they are saving you time that you would have put into marketing to them. The ones left on your list are targeted and likely to respond anyway.

I am not worried about it. As JensSteyaert stated, if they want to unsubscribe they will do so either way. I would rather have them unsubscribe than get content that they don't want. Keeping your list happy is key.

I don't mind this change at all. If the people on my list want off the list because they feel it isn't valuable, I want to make it as easy for them to find the unsubscribe button as possible. It will help clear the non-buyers off of my list without me having to do anything...

I decided a while back that it was more professional to have my from email address come from the site I'm promoting, so I simply stopped using Gmail for this purpose long ago and instead setup an email account for each of the segments I need them for.

That way I control the entire process and I just manage all of my email accounts with Outlook 365. It really easy for me now.

Of course I still have my Auto-responder account with GetResponse, I just use my own from addresses now.

Google can do whatever they want to as far as I'm concerned.

And if people are giving me a gmail email account on an opt in , It's fine with me if they unsubscribe, I think it should be up to me to engage them enough to want to stay on my list. I don't see this as any different than any other email address they would give.

I've used the "unsubscribe" button in my gmail account. I love it! I hate clicking the "click here to unsubscribe" link at the bottom of emails. I get alot of crap emails - cause i buy alot online. So this is a convenience for me. I'm sure the same is true for 93% (or whatever) of the people online who don't sell anything.

When Google gets it right, they get it right. I love this feature personally.

Worried about people unsubscribing to your list? The solution is very simple:

    1. Do a better job targeting.

    2. Provide something worth opening and reading.

The announcement was 20 days ago and I still don't have the button showing up on any of my gmail accounts. I guess it is a very slow rollout.

I do not think this is anything new? I have been using this function within my gmail accounts for some time now.

If a person is not taking any time to read or look for your information, newsletter etc. and they unsubscribe, they probably were not a good candidate for your products and/or services to begin with.

    To crappy email "marketers" maybe?

It will result in fewer spam complaints, which unless I'm mistaken, is a good thing.

As others have said, this is really no big deal. And AdWeek is making mountains out of molehills.

I think this will impact different businesses differently depending on the type of business, but overall, this is much ado about nothing. As others have said, if someone REALLY wants to unsubscribe from my list, I hope they do.

"Get off of my list!" Seriously. I don't want someone who doesn't want to be there clogging up my delivery and open rates. Not to mention, driving up my monthly fees with AWeber.

And as Christ30K mentioned, it's much better than someone hitting the unsubscribe button! People do that regularly out of ignorance or laziness. They have no idea how much damage they to do us when they do that. So kudos to GMail!

being a successful email marketer for almost 8 years now this doesn't phase me at all. People can already unsubscribe if they want.

No matter what you do or how good your emails are people will still unsubscribe, but if you focus on building a following and creating emails people actually like to read you'll be fine.

Things like this only freak out the amateurs and make my life a little easier, I'm sitting back making money while everyone is running around claiming the sky is falling.

People who freak out about something that small aren't cut out for a business based around technology.

I see this as a positive in that it'll make it easier for people that don't want to continue the relationship with you and are very unlikely to buy from you to unsubscribe.
