Calling wordpress experts main domain name change help please

Hi everyone

Well when I started with wordpress my main domain name was mydebtfreejourney dot org but I dont really use that now.

I have an addon domain marcuspassey dot com which is what I want as my main domain now and it has a customised header and paid theme( I dont have my header saved on my computer either). I really dont wanna bugger it up in any way I have to start my mentoring next week with Alex Jeffreys and need this site how it is without any mistakes.

I also need to update to wordpress 2.8 is that difficult?? as I say all stuff like this worries me incase I lose anything or my blog disappears, the thing that worries me is I have to remove the addon domains from cpanel and once main domain change has taken place add them back. What happens if my marcuspassey dot com has disappeared or not as it was?

This is what it says on the change domain form

WARNING: Because of cPanel limitations, make sure you backup and remove any addon/parked/subdomains from the account before submitting this form, or else this domain change will fail.
If you remove the addon domains through cPanel, the files for the addon domain will remain on the server. Once the domain name change has taken place, you can then readd the addon domains via cPanel and all the addon domains will go back to the way it was prior to removing them

Anyhow just wondered has anyone performed a domain change and added an addon domain back in its place?

cheers

marcus

Why don't you install a fresh wordpress on the new subdomain, download your blogs files, and upload them up to the new subdomain and when the new blog is tweeked to your liking just delete the old one or toss in a redirect?

You can save a backup that will upload and autopopulate, and will have your original dates on everything.

This way you will get a fresh upgrade of WP - which by the way has some really nifty new features - like for instance you can search plugins from your admin and install instantly without having to ftp anymore.

How many pages/posts are you talking about?

Jill, this may be a silly question, but could I do this with switching an already existing wordpress blog with only a few posts to a different domain? And then just redirect the old domain to the new?

Yes, you can. Here are the steps:
        1. Make a backup of your existing blog; i.e. download the WP files AND export your database (or simply use the "Export" feature in your admin panel)
        2. Install the saved WP files on the new location and make it a new blog (i.e. make sure it has its own database)
        3. Import either the backup database, via phpMyadmin or the exported content (whichever method is more comfortable for you...)

        4. If needed, you can place a .htaccess redirect at the old location to redirect any query exactly to the same post/URL.

Ok, you should be able to

      1. Back up posts from old blog onto a csv file.

      2. Back up the posts on your new blog onto a csv file

      3. Disable all the plugins on your main blog, and then upgrade. Might I suggest -

      4. Sign up for SimpleScripts | Automated Script Installation and Management - this will allow you a one click upgrade every time wordpress upgrades. There is a free and a light version. I have this for free on my host, and I can't tell you how awsome it is to upgrade, and if the upgrade goes funky I get the option to revert back to the old - but that may just be my host.

      5. Ask your server if you have an automated back up of your files, and when was the last time they did it - this way you can revert back if all hell breaks loose.

      6. Install the new Wordpress using simplescripts or how ever

      7. upload both of the csv files to fully populate your blog to look like it has been there a really long time.

      8. When all is done delete dot org or redirect.

You could also do a dummy test and create a subdomain like http:// test.marcuspassey.com and see how your install goes and loading up of new content.

What are you most worried about loosing? the template that is tweeked? You can back-up those files too from the server.

LOL, well, making your backups won't hurt anything. And I promise you will not blow up the internet if your site goes down. I did one time, but they fixed the problem after that.

I had to install a site 3 times when I went onto my first hosting and blog. After the 3rd time I felt very at ease moving files around and installing stuff.

I know it's scary, but sometimes you just gotta jump in there and play around.

      Who is your hosting company?

Also, worst case scenario I'm sure one of our local techies here will help you shift things around for a nominal fee.

    Hey Jill

Its just something I really dont feel comfortable with doing it,might get someone else to do it for now and learn later on.

I already had a panic with one blog and this blog is part of my new plans so I shall probably end up paying someone to do it.I do have a guy that sent me a PM to help me out just waiting on that.

Thanks for all your help people I shall bump this thread back up it I have not got it sorted.
