Changing the dream
First, there's a scene when tech support shows up in the bar and says to Tom Cruise's character, "...it's very important to calm down...you must overcome your fears and take control of your life again...it's as easy as holding that glass...what if I told you that you can take control of all of this...look at all these people..they're all only here because you wanted them to be here..."
When I heard this I began to think about my life. I started thinking about the people in my life, who I've surrounded myself with. About the choices I make, the circumstances occurring to me. Everything in my life is a part of my creation, the people, experiences and circumstances are all here because i wanted them to be here.
It's what many call the law of attraction. What we put emotional power into, becomes reality. We place our order, what we want, through the emotional energy we project to the universe.
The question I found myself asking is, is all this in my life REALLY what I want? Am I living the life I want to be living?
Maybe you can relate. Look at your life, the people, experiences, situations, your job...do you really want those things? Because quite often we find we aren't living the way we want to. And we think, "I didn't want this divorce or this enemy or this debt or this job" so why did I end up with these situations and people?
True that we may not want those things really. But the law of attraction works on emotional energy...not intellectual. And most of us invest our emotional energy into the things we don't want, thus sending a sort of false message to the universe and essentially saying "I want this, my emotions are clearly stating that".
We do this through fear and fear based energies and actions. This is why overcoming fear is so important.
A good example of how we attract what we don't want so often is the way animals in nature behave. When prey runs, the predator chases. The animal is running away, essentially saying "I don't want to get caught and eaten!" But its fear-based action and focus sends a different message to the predator. And ends up giving it the very thing it didn't really want...it sent the wrong message, saying it wanted what it didn't, to be chased down.
It may sound harsh to say I've created the experiences or relationships or life I don't want through this empowering of fear...but there's a brilliant flip side.
And that's the second part of what I took from the film. Penelope Cruz's character says "every moment is a chance to turn it all around.."
You can change the "orders" you are placing with the universe at any moment, you can take control of your life, it's as easy as holding a glass of water. I believe it's what faith is.
But how?
We change our life the same way we created the life we don't want, with our energy. The difference is, we often create what we don't truly want by empowering the emotions of fear. Through our focusing on our fears and acting out of fear, we invest in fear and thus we place false orders with the universe, saying we want what our hearts truly don't want. The emotions are strong and so the message sticks...it doesn't happen instantly, fear is a weaker emotion and thankfully the universe doesn't just immediately create what we order..but after consistent focus on what we don't want we end up manifesting it.
The same is true of love...except love, the opposite of fear, is an exponentially more powerful emotional energy and in line with nature and the universe. It fits and delivers exponentially faster. So the question becomes at each moment, am I choosing this or taking this action based out of fear or love?
Think of it like a rushing river. The river represents the natural flow of energy in this universe, love. Love in every form is natural, think about two people who fall for each other and it just fits, it's just natural. Love is natural, easy, like moving the same direction as the rushing water.
Fear is like planting your feet in the river and trying to push upstream. You'll get "there" eventually, with a lot of effort, pain, and it will take a much longer time...which is good because "there" will be the place you didn't really want to be.
But when you release and go with the flow, a sort of surrender to the natural flow...you turn it all around instantly and move much faster toward what you really want. That's the beauty of turning it all around, not only can you instantly choose to and surrender to the flow of love, make choices that are out of love...but you'll see the results of this extremely fast.
It's about overcoming your fear, making a conscious choice to open your eyes, take a leap of faith...an action based out of love.
Love is much more powerful than fear. The emotions centered around love when activated, I am beginning to think are what most people call faith. I'm not referring to religion. I believe faith is love being translated into action.
It's this strength of love activating faith that can turn it all around at any moment.
For example, having faith in yourself based out of love for yourself, this alone can effect so many choices and decisions you make both subtly and outright in a single day.
So back to that question I found myself asking when I was watching Vanilla Sky... Am I living the life I truly want? Am I surrounded by the people I truly want around me? Do I find my life a struggle? Like pushing against the flow?
If you find yourself in a dream that has become a nightmare, there is a better way to live...to open your eyes...
Remember how Tom Cruise's character woke up from his nightmare? It was a combination of a leap of faith and overcoming his greatest fear all in one move.
It begins with love, love for yourself that empowered you to have faith in yourself to change it all...a moment at a time.
I don't in any way assume to hold all the answers to this process I'm referring to. I'm merely a student of this stuff myself..everyday.
But this is a beginning. And most people will never awaken from the nightmare of their life. So I hope this helps someone and gives you the courage to begin awakening, to begin facing your fears and making a better life for yourself.
I truly hope this helps you along in your journey
Namaste,
John Westbrook
