Thanks for giving this post a quick look. This won't take long.

I'm gathering some data. I'm setting up the launch of a brand new service/business opp in the Personal Development (self-growth) category. Just need your fedback on which of these would be your choice.

Thanks sooooo much for your help. It's appreciated.

My number one priority in life would be: (Please choose one)
1) More happiness
2) More time
3) More money
4) Other (please note a short description)

Thanks again everyone!

Well if you have money then you have time and when you have time to do things for yourself or for others you get happy... Don't now if it makes sense to you guys...

    I chose more happiness.

There's an old axiom about attaining things in life and it goes like this:
      BE - DO - HAVE
It means that if you are a certain way (BE) you'll act a certain way (DO) and then you'll have certain things (like happiness) in your life. Of course you can choose to BE any way you want and that would dictate your results.

I first heard of it in a marketing book. Most people seem to operate like this:
      HAVE - BE - DO
They want to have stuff so they pursue success and recognition to exclusion of all else. But what they usually end up with is, in the end, disappointing to say the least. Henry Ford was once quoted a saying that he was happier when he was just a mechanic. He died in ill health at 83 alone in his arm chair at his big empty house, called Fairlane, which was his estate in Dearborne.

Happiness No-Doubts, i worked in the niche for sometime its a populated niche.

BE-DO-HAVE is the way the universe functions, This can be understood only by Humans, hence we are called HUMAN-BEINGS, because we are BEING every moment, there is no other species in the world that is called Being, like dog-being, cat-being, etc, they are just called cats, dogs, etc :-)

Besides Being the right way is the key to happiness and happiness is the key to everything - Time, Money, Love, Fame, Power or any desire.

Happiness is definitely most important. I believe it is imperative that we have the right mindframe to attract money and success to us. T Harv Eker and other popular speakers/authors speak extensively on how money is a mind game.

Winning the lottery will give us more money, but it will not give us complete happiness

You're right about happiness not being increased by winning the lottery. I read a report where researchers found that a person who's lost the use of their limbs (paraplegic) is about on the same on the happiness scale as the lottery winner is after one year.

      Says a lot I think.

It took me more time to think and after I've read the replies I've realized that it will be more happiness. On the other hand if I were to choose without thinking, it would be more money because if I have money then I can just relax and be happy. Although it will be too good to be true.

While I think most people would say more happiness, I am actually going to say more money. If you have the money to take care of the day to day, the happiness is much easier as well as the time. I mean, I can be happy when I am poor and happy when I am rich. I would rather be happy and rich.

Not only that it allows me to do things for others and spread happiness to others.

My mom had a saying which I find that makes total sense.

If you are genuinely happy, then it might be safe to presume that you don't have any pressing problems and that your life is pretty good!

So, couldn't it be argued that if we all pursue happiness then everything else must fall into place? (having said that, I'd rather be miserable and wealthy than miserable and broke!) LG.
The way I experience genuine happiness is like an immune system. It may sag a bit because it's under attack by negative stuff. But then it snaps back to shape automatically all by itself. A type of self-healing if you want to call it that.

If the bailiff is at the door does it help the situation if your state of mind were to change drastically from steady happiness to something else? I've been in that situation and I've found that it definitely doesn't help at all.

Remember, there is a big difference between happiness and satisfaction. I may be happy but I'm not satisfied. There's just too much pain in the world for that. Too many good people that need some help.

      Thanks for your reply.

      Thanks Abul-Hussain for your reply.

I believe happiness is a state of mindset so I don't know about the "destination" or the "pursuit" description. Sounds like we have to chase after it or something.

If genuine happiness is part of a type of immunity, as I think it to be, then it's really a "discovery" more than anything else.

Also, once it's discovered then how can it go away?

Thanks for taking the time to write a reply. Hope everything is good for you in the UK.

At 19 years of age a friend and I left our home state and headed out to travel. We arrived one day just outside of Austin Texas where we parked our car in a national park and set up camp. I think we had about $700 between the two of us. After taking a week or so to enjoy the surroundings we set out on our job search.
Both of us found employment in the construction field in a short time as Austin was booming at that time.

The interesting thing though is that even though we both were generating income, we ended up staying in that park for another 2 months.
In all honesty, I don't think I have ever been happier than I was at that time. As happy? Yes. Happier? I don't think so.

I think people often forget the little fact that "Life Is an Adventure and Not a Destination".
It seems that one can choose to piss and moan and make excuses, or can enjoy what they have at hand while working a plan of growth.

Echoing what almost everyone has said here - definitely happiness. I believe that with happiness, everything else will fall into place.

And if I were to choose another top priority, then it would have to be "the power of letting go". Sometimes in life, we just have to know when it's time to let go and move on. The power of letting go is the best kind of power in this world... It frees you. So many people beat themselves up over things in the past and things yet unseen. Held back by their fears and insecurities, they can only dream of a happier tomorrow.

      Indeed. I totally agree.
There's a quote I like by Alfred D'Sousa that goes like this:

"For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, some thing to be got through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life."

Just my opinion but my priorities are in the following order:

    1) God
    2) Family
    3) Career (however you choose to make money)

Money isn't a prerequisite for a great life. The world is filled with people who have more money than most of us will ever see yet are unhappy and unfulfilled. I'm sure we all know some who make less than we do yet they live a very fulfilling life. After a certain point, money is just a case of diminishing returns.

I've always believed if you can't be happy in the current moment, changing whatever variable (whether money, relationships, etc.) won't make you happy.

These are my personal thoughts and I'm not trying to start a debate on anything.

I agree completely. If some "variable" changes, and then in turn changes you, that would mean that the state of your life is subject to all forces outside of you. Can't be a good thing.

The truly happy people I know don't have "happiness" as a goal in life. They aren't the most ambitious nor the very poor - they are often those who live a simpler lifestyle but their needs are met in terms of income and time. The priorities are not "more" but "sufficient" as far as money goes.

I don't think it's possible to become happy because you wish for it or strive for it. The idea that happiness is a constant in any life is a fallacy as it comes and goes - and often at times least expected.

But to enjoy fully the moments of happiness you have in life its best to live in a way that allows happiness to happen. You can't do that if you are worried about a roof over your head, or food for your family.

Get your life in order so you have the basic "stuff" you need covered and be thankful for what you have - happiness will find you.

Yet, I know that if I had enough money to get the bills paid, fix the broken heater (esp now that Winter is approaching), fix my chronic pain situation and actually be able to buy the grandkids Christmas and birthday presents (just to see their faces light up), I'd be so freaking happy (again), you wouldn't recognize me.

I've wanted to answer your poll with "more money," in spite of how hypocritical or shallow it sounds.

But Kay's post made me realize that it isn't about having MORE money... it's about having a "sufficient" amount of money, enough to get those stresses off my back so that I can return to the happiness I once felt.

Getting my life in order WITHOUT sufficient funding, however, is nigh impossible. Does this mean I am doomed to live the rest of my life unhappy? That can't be right...

Great reply Kay. I'm not sure how I should tabulate your answer but I think you're for "happiness". You just don't believe it should be one's goal. Perhaps you're right.

Happiness, I believe, should be something that's readily available to you 24/7. Like a diamond in your pocket you can choose to look at anytime. Or not. The feeling of a solidness in the gut that's always there and presents a kind of joy to you whenever you do something good for others is the source of happiness for me. It's so self-sustaining that I can carry on with my day and it's just there. Always

It's like chewing-gum-and-driving kind of simple.

It's true that worry can impede happiness but if it's there, as I've just described, then it tends to buffer the stress of such dire conditions and that causes happiness to be there even when it doesn't look like it's apropos.

        Hope this makes sense.

        Thanks again.

Interesting that the choice of "more time" comes up quite often.

I was reading the other day about how "time" only exists in the present. Not in the past and not in the future either.

For example, if we say that next week we're going to (blah, blah, blah) then when we get to next week it's going to be re-named.

        It will become... the "present".

        To put this in context:
What this all means is that we should do today all that we can because the other two labels don't exist in reality for us at all.

        Deep? Yeah, but cool eh?

        Thanks for your input nehaluck11

      Hi,

Time is Time and each day we have the same amount of time ( or of live )...So i can't have more time, but i can manage my time depend of my priorities...and no time is not Money - TIME IS TIME...priceless

What about Money? - Money is like a tool to get what you want or to live your lifestyle your desire...

What about happiness? If you get what you're really want, your desire ( your dream) your lifestyle ( no matter what it is ), happiness is at your door...As a man said : if you want to be happy, start by doing things that make you happy...simple yes but how many people apply this principle?

      What about my priority?
sorry but i can't give a priority because for me everything work together...If i get more money, i'll live more and more my lifestyle so more happiness and more time for my priorities...If i get more happiness it's mean that i started to make things that make me happy, and take the time to do it with when its necessary spend the money to make it real...
It's like a circle everything seem independant but everything work together...

If i had to do a choice i'll choose extraball of time - more than 24h/day like Yes you win 15 years more...Congratulations...but it's not a choice in the real life...because live it's like a bank a magic bank...
You get 86420$ each day in your account - But you have 2 rules - First you need to spend every $ by day you can't save money everything need to be spend at the end of the day...
Second rule - The bank can close your account like that without tell you when, why? just like that and you can't manage it...
So each day you receive 86420s of live, everyday...but it can stop like that...you don't where? when? why?
So what's the most important $86420 or 86420s of life...? great question
TIME because you can't buy TIME - you live time, you spend time...but you can't Buy it;:...NEVER...

      Maybe i should say Time...

      anyway..take care of your time...

Irrespective of money, whether I have a lot of money or no money, whether I'm thin or fat, whether I have time or not...I want to be happy.

Happiness is not a function of money or time. It has to do with your self-esteem & faith in yourself!

It seems that "more happiness" is definitely winning out. But how do people define "happiness"? Is there any way you could/would quantify it?
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[1127993].message }}
    • Profile picture of the author mobiusman
      Hi EIH888.

I would quantify happiness this way:

First and foremost authentic happiness depends on totally intrinsic (inside) things.
All that stuff that's outside of you (extrinsic) is capable of manipulating your state of happiness but that's more of an interruption from what I'd call 'media' (Everything your 5 senses can detect outside of you is media).

Happiness, real happiness, comes from the gut. That's where you feel it most. There are valid physiological reasons for that but I can't really get into it here. (My blog has that.)

Real happiness doesn't go up on a big high and only slightly modulates downward on any given day. Steadyness is a feature of real happiness.

Having real happiness should not be confused with satisfaction. In other words it's possible to be happy but not necessarily satisfied.

      Hope this makes sense,

      David

Great observation here. So true I think. Helping is giving of yourself. In the universe, like in the quantum world, everything is topsy turvy. You give away - and you get back in return.

I think that, with all the news reports about rich people and their troubles, maybe more and more people are beginning to realize that riches and wealth are different things.

Riches are material things and the happiness quotient on those is low because of its short life.
Wealth is about having things like good friends and loved ones, integrity, security in one's self that is not dependent on the economy or other factors in the environment.

We all need money. That's a given. But have you ever noticed that the very rich almost always feel they must find ways to give it away in order to experience the joy and happiness you and I get from taking the dog for a walk with our spouse.

You're all doing a great job here. Keep it up.

It's fortunate that you asked for other priorities than the two you listed. I think that it's a really interesting detail about human beings that when we think of happiness or what our top priorities should be, money and time for leisure come immediately to mind.

Very few people ever mention making their job satisfaction, love life, or relationships with friends and family a priority.

Consider which memory you would rather have on your death bed:

    1. That big business deal that netted you a small fortune.
    2. The time you got a bigger annual bonus than anyone else in your department.
    3. That time that you volunteered to help feed families on the street at Thanksgiving.
    4. The time that you and your spouse were sitting on the sofa and your three-year-old sat between you and said, "I love you mommy! I love you daddy!"

Now don't misunderstand me. I have no problem with making a lot of money. Things like item numbers 1 & 2 above could be great memories.

My point is that when considering happiness or setting priorities, too many people don't even consider anything but financial achievements or at least money is ranked so far above everything else that things like numbers 3 & 4 above are nearly forgotten.

    Hi,

I am going to say that money is my first requrement right now, but I also know that happiness is not dependant on money, but time can be made more available, in a manner if speaking, when you have moeny to pay others for services, etc.

However, I would say moeny first.

However, I know I need to be happy all the time, and that is something within me.

    All the best

Funny how this works sometimes. If you say you need more money to be happy then your happiness level will go up and down like a yoyo depending on your income.

Firstly, in the modern age you generally need enough money to survive. Note I say 'enough' rather than a lot. My aim is to earn enough money that I don't have to worry about it any more and then get on with those things money can't buy - but they do need allocated time. So money can buy time.

As you have mentioned, happiness is a discovery. I therefore don't even consider it in the same way I do money. I think you cannot be happy if it is conditional. 'If I had more money, I would be happy.' 'If I found a loving partner, I would be happy.' In my mind you decide to be happy where you are. It is the discovery that you decide to be happy NOW. I find I am at my happiest when I am moving forward so I ensure I develop every day (and that is so easy to do).

So, yes, more money leads to more time but I can decide to have happiness already.

      I think that makes sense.....
I'm not sure I'm following your thinking here. It looks like you're saying that you have happiness already so money comes forward in your selection of priorities.

      Have I got that right?

Happiness, in my mind, is a decision to take where you are. You decide to discover happiness in whatever you are doing now - as in the story of 'Acres Of Diamonds'. I guess gratitude is a large part of that.

Happiness is then fuelled by moving forward (not stagnating where you are) towards goals which then include money and the security, time and the benefits that can bring.

I am happy now because I appreciate what I have got and where I am going. Who I am and who I am becoming.

Money can clear time for you to enjoy the things 'that money can't buy.'

I think what I am saying is happiness is not quantifiable but money is.
Let me just back up here and say that happiness is not a physical thing like money is. Therefor it's really hard to "quantify" it by using the same boxing terms.

The theory that happiness is fueled by whatever we accomplish is an indication to me that the type of happiness you are referring to is only a cerebral (head-based) happiness not authentic ethereal (gut-based) happiness.

One type (cerebral) rises and falls depending on external happenings the other (ethereal) is much more stable. This is why we see young children playing outside even in a war zone.

Can authentic happiness be a goal? It's a search. When you reach the end of your search (my clients do it in just one day by using my H.E.R.O. eMachine) then you can say that you've reached your goal.

          Cheers!

    #2 for me. TIME

I am working my arse off doing a day job + IM in spare time, so that, ironically I will earn myself more time in the future. The idea is to work 2-3 days and earn enough to live off. What will I do for the other 2 days? Well thats my choice but I think it could be more enjoyable IM (e.g. making videos etc.) or self development, or being with nature, or helping other people become successful.

Lame for sure. Just check out most of the stories of the celebs. How happy do you think Tiger Woods is right now?

I agree with you that, when it's all said and done, we really aren't perusing success are we? We're really after a more lasting and abundant happiness.

In the end that's our real bank account balance that matters.

I think that all of these things are intertwined to some extent. It's easy to say, I want to be happy (who doesn't) - but do you have any idea what makes you happy, or your needs for growth as a person? Often, what we think will make us happy, is far off the mark. I had never imagined that managing a video store would bring me so much happiness. But the customer interaction and talking about something entertaining all day was quite enjoyable. If I hadn't just tried it for a job, I would have never imagined it to be so much fun.

You need time in order to realize the potential of achieving your goals. I've read studies which show that goal seeking is actually an important element to attaining happiness. If you don't prioritize this goal seeking then it could get lost amongst other things.

We all desire more money, but likely not for the reason we think. Now, that I've had some life experience I've learned to see it differently. I associate money with freedom rather than material objects. I would like to have more money, solely for the purpose of having more time and resources available to pursue goals.

If you look at these things as being connected, then there may be a way to present them in a format which is unique enough to stand alone. How about - "Be Happy, while building your business for more freedom." ? Just a thought.

It might be a cop-out simply because I couldn't choose one without the other. But I hope that it provided at least a bit of insight.

You know, after I made that last post I realized that I failed to address the question. I suppose that just goes to show how bad I am at prioritizing.

I really like the way you put it Mobiusman - that time only exists in the present. It's entirely true. The other aspects of time (future and past) are simply abstract concepts we hold in our mind. Concepts which we can only hold here and now.

Once it's put in those terms, I would have to say that priority becomes mastery of time. If you can maintain happiness right now in this moment, then you should be able to do it always, regardless of the numbers in your bank account.

Whilst I strapped for cash at the moment (very heavily in debt) my first priority would be more energy (physical and mentally (if that's the right expression)) and I suppose what the more energy would do is allow me to achieve more in the time I have.

In addition and related I would like more unshakable focus as distractions are also taking me away from my goals (and stealing my time)

I would say TIME because it's the only thing you can't get back. I also think that the three are pretty equal though. The more 'wealth' you create, the more time you have (if you do it right). The more time you have, the more happy you are since you can do the things you like, spend time with family, etc.

But time is number 1 because once it's gone, you can never get it back.

    I'm gonna say more excitement!

I can be pretty happy eating a chocolate cake, but that's not necessarily going to get me excited to jump straight out of bed.

I'm excited when I can be with those I love. I'm excited when I can travel to faraway lands (in Australia, everywhere is a faraway land). I'm excited when I can contribute to the lives of those that are less fortunate than me.

For me, happiness is important as well, but it just resembles being content with where we are. Whereas excitement means we're happy with where things are now, but we're also looking forward to the next adventure.

To live a life of spectacular excitement is my priority.

    2) I have plenty of time because money is no longer an issue
    3) I have plenty of money so I no longer worry about making enough
    4) Other: I guess my number one priority in life is to never say anything that might hurt someone's feelings, always be kind and offer a smile no matter what anyone does or says to me because they are having a bad day, and always let my friends and family know that I love them unconditionally. After all, the important things are not what we take with us when we go, but what we leave behind.

I'll take happiness over money any day of week. What is hapiness to me?

    1) Wealthy. Not millionaire....but enough so I do not have to worry about bills getting older.

    2) Free time. no working 10+ hours a day 6 days a week. Sorry just not on. Not lazy but I am no work slave.

    3) Health. This has to be the top priorty. Without health and fitness I am afraid everything else will not happen. I can't really do much from 6 feet under.

I see people getting so stressed out because they want to make a million next week. Chill out. Why do you need to mkae so much money? $1 million in the bank would give you about $25,000 pa. passive income. What about a 1 hour a day busienss that could make you $50,000, $75,000, $100,000+ p.a. income?

So, more time, more money, more happiness, more family? Which is it?

I think the key word here is 'more'. If you set a goal to have more of something then if you get just a little bit more than you have right now you have achieved your goal. If I have a goal to make more money and I make $1 more I have achieved my goal. The question is 'Is that what I really intended?'

If I am absolutely miserable and I have a goal to be more happy then once I am just a little bit less miserable I have achieved my goal. But is that what you really want?

I think the key to anything is to quantify what you want. Then BE-DO-HAVE is an awesome way to live your life.

Happiness is always the core goal. But money and time helps a lot!

If you have a lot of money but no time, then that is not good. I run into people all the time who want to take trips but can't because even though they are in a 6-figure job, they can't take more than 2 weeks off.

If you have a lot of time, but no money, that is no fun as well. You may be able to tour Europe for 4 months on a whim if you wanted to, but you have no capital to finance it.

My goal is to continually increase my money, while retaining my time freedom. There is no doubt that I could be making more money than I am right now, if I just spent an extra month a year working. But it's not worth it. The "delayed gratification" theory only works for so long.

My advice is, reward yourself now, stop waiting, and live the life you want. It's easy to make money online if you simply take action on the ideas. Then once you get it going you can live anywhere in the world you want, and work a couple days a week to sustain it.

Wow, your "quick post" really made me think...

I would initially choose happiness, but on second though I'm going a little deeper with number 4 (other). Our ultimate goal is to be happy. Everybody wants that. But do you know what makes you happy?

For me, I'd say "sense of accomplishment". I have all the time in the world and all the reasons to be happy... (not saying I'm unhappy) but I feel anxious all the time, worried about the future...

But every now and then something happens that gives a sense of accomplishment and completely changes my day! For me, this is the missing ingredient of "happiness".

I love how you talk about the feeling of accomplishment and how you noticed it's closely inter-related and is an "ingredient" of happiness.

As I posted before happiness stole the show by a huge margin in this little poll. I must say that I don't think that all of those that answered are UNhappy with their lot in life (although some may be).

But, if I was a betting man, I'd wager that all of them recognize in one way or another that the missing "ingredient" - as you put it - to happiness is what can only come from action of some sort. Even if the action turned out to be a flop something was done. Something was accomplished and that alone has some take-home value.

        Thanks for you comments.

Good choice. Health is important to be sure although I've read in Dr. Shopra's books that whatever happens in the mind can be expressed in the body.

What that means is that a mind that is preoccupied with stress and unhappiness could lead to a physical breakdown in heath. It is known that a person's immune system is weakened by such things as worry, regret, and a range of unpleasant feelings associated with a lac of personal autonomy.

      Does that make sense?

I'm probably not clear enough when asked if you thought there might be a time deficit in the world today.

          Words are tricky sometimes.

Like many words deficit has a few different meanings in English.
One meaning is "debt" and no, you're absolutely right, that would be quite impossible. How could you have a debt of happiness?

The other meaning is "shortage of something needed, required".
This meaning is pretty much what I meant and the reason I asked the question is because an overwhelming number of respondents to this post are telling me that happiness is their first priority. (Of course that doesn't mean that money, health, or time are not important - they are - but they are things that can have a benchmark level that, once reached, is often good enough to not hinder happiness.)

Just wondering if you think this indicates that, these days at least, authentic happiness in the world is something that might be described as a crisis of shortage.

SIDEBAR: About money. My generation as a whole (baby boomers) is the richest demographic in the history of the world yet I don't see a surplus of happiness pouring out from it.

I think there is a real swing happening these days towards intrinsic things over extrinsic material things. More and more people are finding that, after a certain benchmark is reached where the necessities of life are met, those (material) things don't add to happiness very much.

More happiness is a summary of all the other options you have given. As to be truly happy requires both materialistic and spiritualistic contentment

Top Priority for me is always health and love.

Then comes time - to spend with my 6-months old daughter... and money to enjoy the good things in life.

    So...

    1. Health
    2. Love
    3. Time
    4. Money

    Thanks again everyone!
I would rather to choose more money than more happiness. Let's face the fact that how long will it takes to be happy if you have no money? I don't know either, but for sure it will not take too long. I do believe in more money will lead you to more happiness.

Interesting reply Jamian and I do respect your point of view. I'm not trying to convince you of anything here but for the sake of clarity in the discussion I need to point out some things here.

Firstly, you are right about not being too happy when you have no money if your existence is threatened because of it. By that I mean you have no place to live or no food to eat.

My question may not have said so but what I am assuming in this post is that baseline needs for one's living are being met every month continually.

So, therefore given this fact having "no money" may mean different things to different people.

Interestingly, psychologist and author Mihaly Czikszentmihalyi gave a relevant talk on happiness on the Ted forum. At 4:16 into it he points out what his studies show about the relationship of money and happiness over many years.
Check it out and please come back and tell us what you thought.

    More Money.

I come from a background where I have never had real amounts of money in my life. I'm talking about, buy the things you want when you want it, kind of money. Living in a nice area with a nice house kind of money. Not having to worry about next months rent kind of money.

Money does not buy happiness. But money buys me a new experience which makes me very happy.

Money also creates more time for which I have to spend on the projects which I have interest in, thus making me happier.

The 3 go hand in hand. But to satisfy your request. Money is most important to me at this point in time.

I would have to say more money. I am sure if I have more money, then I can take all the time I need to spend it, and while I'm spending it, I can find some worth while cause to share it on that will bring true happiness. And if I have more money then I can take my family with me. I would love to take my children to a third world country so they can see how others live without T.V., and then maybe they will be more thankful for what they do have. Living the American Dream....
