Methods for increasing Intelligence

Wow Gareth! That is one heck of a list.

I would like to add one old school approach. It could be considered under your heading of "breathing exercises", which is a little vague:

underwater swimming

The idea is that you moderately exert yourself while holding your breath. This causes a build-up of CO2, which actually INCREASES the oxygenation of your cells, and particularly, your brain (if you google the "Buteyko Method" you will find an explanation of the importance of CO2 in cell oxygenation, including some very compelling videos). The carotid artery also opens up, feeding a lot more blood to your brain.

The practice is mentioned in a lot of old books on intelligence and creativity boosting techniques.

I suppose it doesn't really have to be underwater swimming - you could try holding your breath a little while doing some other modestly strenuous exercise, but I think the act of being underwater creates a LOT of discipline! Also, you shouldn't swim so hard that you end up panting (hyperventilating) - this defeats part of the purpose. You should take a big deep breath, and then continue swimming underwater.

For swimmers - the alternate breathing techniques (where you breathe every 3rd stroke, or every 5th stroke, as opposed to every 2nd stroke) is similar, I think.

Another similar approach that has been mentioned for creativity boosting is to do drownproofing. This is another swimming technique, where you are face-down in the water, breathing very few times per minute. I think the combination of relaxing, floating, light swimming, holding your breath a little and (frankly) boredom all combine to allow your brain to go to more creative places. Especially if you drownproof for 30 or 60 minutes...

That comes under "carotid masking"

What would be really cool would be to set up a community of people serious about increasing intelligence and see who gets their IQ to increase the most

What helps me is Prov 1:7 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom."
The more I absorb the whole book and apply it, the more my intelligence increases! Am on my way ... slowly!

You mentioned Speed Reading twice.

How does reading fast increase your intelligence? Is it like when you read 400wpm instead of 200wpm then you're twice as smart or what? :confused:

What is intelligence anyway?

Some people claim that its possible to read at 20,000+ words per minute with comprehension.

This is possible because the brain is massively parallel. To describe this subjectively it would be like glimpsing at each page in a book for a split second and immediately having a detailed intuitive grasp of its contents and the meaning of its text.

The most effective means to be trained to achieve this is with deep trance hypnosis and speed reading software.

Learning should be a continuous process and the list you have here are all possible if the person is willing to try it. We are blessed with intelligence and it is really up to us on how to develop it. Our intelligence has no limit for as long as we develop it in the right way.

Interesting list but how would you go about doing all/any of that? Could we get a description of a few? i.e. how to get smart drugs? Access to a hyperbaric chamber? and psychic training!? I would do almost anything to increase my intelligence but these are kind of pushing it lol. From this list the only thing I can tell you what worked for me was my reading speed and I used "revitupreading" which gave me the foundation I needed to speed read.

I've always heard you can't fix stupid.

I believe there is a difference between learning and intelligence.
Some people can know a hell of a lot but not be able to put it to use except perhaps as a Jeopardy contestant..
Others can know very little but have the ability to think their way through a brick wall.

Ahh learning vs intelligence...

this is one philosophical debate you really just don't want to get into. How do you define what intelligence really is? Is intelligence the ability to learn? Is it something we already have? Are we born with it? Can we get more of it? Can we lose it? What the heck is it?!?!?!

It's funny you say people can know a hell of a lot and not put it to use...we see that all the time on this forum! Just because a person knows a lot doesn't mean they are intelligent or a good learner either.

There are so many ways this can go so I really hope no one enters the philosophical battlegrounds....hahahahahhaha

Being conservative lets assume each of these methods "when applied in the correct way" can add 1-2 points to your IQ.

This would make anybody a genius.

This is what mass media and the education system should really be used for.

A little information on them would of helped also...

the list is great I will start to look into some of that list to help me gain intelligence!

Yes I have since discovered Dual-N-Back

It would be great to invest some money and go on a world "Intelligence Increase" adventure, visiting scientists and doing training programs - while blogging and compiling all the results into a final product, video or book.

This was a great list. I didn't realize lucid dreaming was one of them though, I've had lucid dreams before and I didn't feel more intelligent. What I feel has ramped up my intelligence is listening to brian tracy and earl nightingale especially every day

You need to constantly use your brain in various activities like puzzles , reading , drawing , thinking etc . Intelligence will automatically increase .

I think while it's nice to have more intelligence, the successful people in life have proven over the years that high intelligence is not the most important factor in achieving success or happiness. Many experts claim that intelligence in itself can't be modified that significantly as it's wired into our genes.

However, what can be modified is emotional intelligence which has proven to be a very important factor for success. Unfortunately, this is also an area that 85% of the population is lacking but fortunately, it can be developed. That is why many companies have been spending lots of money on training their executives on emotional intelligence.

It is a very big list. But i certainly feel that yoga, meditation, reading, engaging in intellectual activities, exchanging views, hearing experts in every field definitely helps to improve our intelligence. Other important things are our sincere desire to have it, personal interest in it, concentration of mind and developing memory and putting things in practice can be of more use.

Great stuff here. To answer Jonar9, you can search "hyperbaric chamber" and find access to them in many metro areas - they are incredible and not weird-feeling or a weird experience. Because they are used so often in the medical field and by athletes wanting to increase their performance, they are easier to find than they used to be. And last time I checked you could actually buy your own for about 5k.

Oh and regarding psychic training, in my opinion it would be more practical to start with increasing your intuitiveness - Practical Intuition for Success by Laura Day is really great and works whether you think you have intuitive ability or not - everybody does.
