There is so many books out there that I can't just name one. But if I had to name an easy read and a book that someone could finish in a couple of hours i would say Og Mandino's "Greatest Salesman in the World." This is a wonderful book and it has life lessons that we all can learn from.

This is the reason why I asked everyone to name just one. I have so many books lying around that I just can't make up my mind which one to read first.

There is no shortage of great books to read. All of those mentioned here are worth their weight in gold. Just pick one and start reading. If it doesn't resonate with you, put it down and start on another. Begin reading one you can really get into, one you feel compelled to read. That will make reading easier and you are more likely to finish it. There are some books that just did not make much sense to me at times, then I would pull it off the shelf (sometimes years later), and it was what I needed at the time. Start where you are at and with what you have, or make a copy of what is listed here and go to your local library and check something out for free.

"Agreed!" Even "The Secret" is no secret - Solomon was the first to verbalize this truth in Proverbs 23:7 -

What all these other books do is to express these same truths in different ways, which helps us to grasp them.

We all have different learning styles - so one book will lead to one person's "ah ha moment", while another may not get anything at all out of the same book.

One of my favorite books is Jesse Du Plantis - The Everyday Visionary: Focus Your Thoughts, Change Your Life

Probably "Light on Yoga" by B.K.S. Iyengar - which describes
and instructs the reader in the practice of the ancient system
of self-development commonly known today as hatha yoga.

The impact it had on my life was more a function of the time
in which I read the book first, in my early 20s.

Is it the book I would recommend if you want to win friends,
    develop charisma, get rich?

No. Not really. I'd say read things like Dale Carnegie
and Napoleon Hill for those sorts of goals.

If you want to get fit and internally balanced as a way to
prepare yourself for success and happiness in life
I definitely would recommend checking it out.

I think the answer to this question depends a lot on your state of mind when reading self help books. There are some times when a books says exactly what you need to hear at the right time.

For me that was two books:

Way Of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman
and Journey to IXtlan by Carlos Castaneda

both classics in their own right.

Tony Robbins' 'Unlimited Power' had a huge impact for me.
Lots of practical stuff that you can use to actually CHANGE right away.

It introduced me to NLP and I became an NLP trainer in the end (although not doing certification trainings).

I love Catherine Ponders books, especially 'Pray and grow rich'. One of the first books to teach releasing. see ch 4.

Totally agree with Rich Pirate on "The way of the peaceful warrior" and another great book is " The Magician's Way" by William Whitecloud. They are similar in that the tell you to trust your instincts and you will never go wrong. Also, when you are in the flow of life everything comes to you without struggle, notice I didn't say without effort.

Agree 100%. I said in another post that "The Law of Success" is Napoleon Hill's major opus. He really goes in-depth into every subject that gets only a chapter in "Think and Grow Rich".

If I had to start with just one it would be
"Ask and It Is Given" by Esther and Jerry Hicks.

After that I'd read "What Does God Want" by
      Neale Donald Walsch

Then I'd tackle "Your lnfinite Power To Be Rich"
      by Joseph Murphy

These three have deeply impacted my life, the

To choose just one can be such a challenge.
As per Shaleniie, Earl Nightingale's "The Strangest Secret" is one of the best Audio's available.

Book wise I would like to submit:

    "Maximum Achievement" - Brian Tracy
    "The Alchemist" - Paulo Coelho
"The Ultimate Gift" - Jim Stovall

Of course there are many more, including what has already been suggested.

Everything listed so far by everyone would make a great place to start your library.

Same for me. I like how the rich man considered his investments to be his "children", and how they would go on to produce more "children" or investments. Very simple language to get the point across.

    I've read most of the books mentioned, and "concur" with em all! (except for The Millionaire Fastlane, I'll have to look into this one eric)...since the heavy hitters are already taken, I'll throw a lesser known, but just as powerful classic on the table;

"Your Greatest Power" by J Martin Koche written in 1953

He was a distributor or publisher (I cannot remember which for sure) for Napoleon Hill's books when they first came out.

According to Koche, our greatest power, is the.... "power to choose".

    Short but awesome book!

      "Talent is Overrated" is overrated.
At least the evidence against its central tenant is building up fast!
Is it however very very interesting and anyone ought to read it, or at least one of the short versions - all titled " ...something 10.000 hours something..".

The research behind all this is dealing with what the authors call "deliberate practise", which is what in their theory builds the talent. This is no doubt key to long term succes, but not the only key....

I love Richard Wiseman's "59 Seconds", because it's trying to get rid of all the new-age mumbojumbo in the self-help industry and actually focuses on strategies that are tested. Can't believe how many unsuccessful people are buying into self-help ideas made up by people who never had any success outside the self-help industry.

I don't usually like WSJ, but this quote is pretty great:
"For all those who are tired of the usual self-help formula--homespun anecdotes, upbeat platitudes, over-the-top promises--Richard Wiseman's 59 Seconds is just what the PhD ordered."
      — The Wall Street Journal

Oh, and the Bible. All the genocide, slavery, misogyny, imposed servility and superstition in there never ceases to make me thankful that I'm living today and not two thousand years ago.

Effortless Success by Michael Neill. This is a 6 Hour + Audio book, but in the style of a conversation with you. I have had this for over 2 years and must have listened to it 100+ times.

I now listen to his weekly radio show and subscribed to his tip of the day which are always very inspirational. In fact it is even a goal of mine to attend one of his coaching retreats.

I’ve read more motivational literature than I'd care to remember for the past 7 years. I think I've reached 100+ titles. I've been simply fascinated with this genre, and these books have really changed my life when I started to apply the principles in them. Plus, they kept me motivated and forging ahead.

I've read Brian Tracy, Tony Robbins, Dale Carnegie, Og Mandino, Susan Jeffers, Tim Ferriss, Maxwell Maltz, Napoleon Hill, W. Clement Stone, Wayne Dyer, the list goes on and on and on...

But out of all these books there is ONE that stands out which I cannot possibly compare it to any other book that was ever written on the subject.

    And that is...
    (drum rolls please...)

NAPOLEON HILL - THE LAW OF SUCCESS

Okay, it's over a thousand pages, structured in 16 Lessons, BUT I promise you it's worth your time investment. It has everything a book about success needs to have, and more. It will alter the way in which you think about success. It will motivate you, inspire you, uplift and energize you, while at the same time giving you the practical steps to achieve success, no matter what that means for you.

IMHO, all other books are but a pale shadow compared to this one.

Maybe I'm subjective and I might be exaggerating - but do a little bit of research and see what people say about it. Check out the reviews on Amazon, on Gutenberg (where you can also grab a free PDF copy of the book) and read a chapter or two just to get an idea of what it can deliver.

If you're a Napoleon Hill fan, you've probably already read Think and Grow Rich, which is a condensed version of Hill's philosophy of success.

Grab the audiobook version and listen to it in your car or wherever you feel comfortable, and experience the difference.

UPDATE: I've even found a copy uploaded by someone on Youtube:

The first one that did it for me (other than the Bible) was The Artist's Way: a Spiritual Guide to Higher Creativity by Julia Cameron. http://amzn.to/vghvRo It really helped me take a good look at myself when I didn't really like how things were going in my life and helped me change things from the inside out. (Of course, change from within is the only real kind of change one can make, but life is a process and it takes a while to figure things out.

many of the books mentioned in this thead I love, too. Nice list.

I read the novel of Myamoto Mushashi first and loved it. But the "Book of Five Rings" is my most motivational book. Ford Motor company knew the Japanese had a book they formulated their business strategies - it took years to get the name of the book. It also took years to find someone to translate the work because it was viewed as an national treasure.
Ford Motor Company got someone to translate the book so they could study what influenced their Japanese counter parts. The Book of Five Rings by Myamoto Musashi.

    3) Secrets of Building Multi-Million Dollar Businesses by Adam Khoo
    4) Master Your Mind Design Your Destiny by Adam Khoo
    5) The secrets of A Young Millionaire by Ray Ling
    6) Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill

None of these books above come close to "The Secrets" and "The Power", which I've just finished reading recently. These 2 books have the greatest impact in my life simply because it changes my life! If you have read "The secrets" you will certainly know how powerful The Law of Attraction is and how it can change your life.

I know that "Law of Attraction" kind of thing might sound vague for some of you. It's normal because it is something that we can't see and touch in our lives. But that does not mean it does not exist. After reading the book, my attitude towards my life have changed so much, and all sorts of good things comes into my life: my social life improved, my fan page is growing much faster than ever, my list FINALLY started to grow from ZERO, my online income shot up higher than before, great ideas keep coming to me and totally drew my attention to test it out, and I started to see some success in MMO market and in the process of creating my first ever wso, and much much more.

It gave me all the confidence to do everything I want in my life. I highly recommend you guys to read it too. =))

There are really two kinds of self-help books. Those that make you feel motivated are ready to go. And those that makes you do things in better way and get results, that makes you feel motivated. I tend to favor the later type.

Actually they tested the self-esteem theory and found it somewhat lacking: Good results in 9th grade predicted hight self-esteem in 10th grade, but high self-esteem in 9th grade did not predict good results in 10th grade.

So selfcontrol seems to be a better target for your reading.
Willpower (Baumeister) and the Willpower instinct (havent read it) are both easy reading and guides to the new willpower/ selfcontrol science.

"Awaken the Giant...." was a great book 20 years ago, but it is quite outdated now.

Not counting the cheaters that posted more than one book (minus pronoun), that's a lot of endorsement for 'Think and Grow Rich'.

If you haven't read it yet, make it your next book.

With that said, 'The Law of Success' is now going into my 'to read', and I'm picking it up ASAP.

First, you will need this book: "Your erroneous zone" from Wayne Dyer in order to take the garbage out. Then you are ready to raise to the top with "Think and grow Rich" and all wonderful books mentioned above.

The Bible. Even if you are not a Christian, you will be truly amazed. There is NOT ONE positive, constructive, or motivational self-help book ever written for any topic that is NOT based on what is already in the Bible.

If you would like to disprove this ... please let me know!

Crucial Conversations is still at the top of my list. Certainly there are tons of incredible books but this has to be, by far, the best book on communication I have seen. It details out in well written form how to have those difficult, emotionally charged conversations that could make or break you. Politics, sex, money, and religion seem to be the big four emotionally charged subjects.

If someone can find a better book than this please let me know.

I'm reading the Art of Happiness right now

Some of the best books that come to mind to me are:

      1) The Law of Success - Napolean Hill

      2) The 48 Laws of Power - Robert Greene

      3) Steve Jobs - Walter Issacson (it's a bio, but it has enough content to significantly help your life, motivate a reader, and demonstrate qualities and skills which matter)

      4) EntreLeadership - Dave Ramsey

      5) As Man Thinketh also has to go on the list

There are really so many books available in the market for self development, but most of the user don't know about the author before. After purchase they find nothing special in the book to read and something that let them gain self confidence to stand up in society. I was also looking for some interesting stuff over the internet and found one beautiful life case book that can inspire anybody. It's all about a story where A migrant courageous young man from Moldova walks for six months to reach a destination he knows nothing about in a new country. The author shares his real-life story, as it happened when he walked barefoot across Europe. Book is available on Amazon store, you can search "No One's Business: A Migrant's Barefoot Journey to Millions" and buy it with one click.

I think that each book a person reads would add to their life. For me, there isn't one book I would say is the best book written. There are just too many good books.

I read lots of self-help books, and all of them teach me something new. So I would say that it is a combination of what you need to the particular point in your life.

Think and Grow Rich is up there as many books have practically copied this one.

However, Rhythm of Life from Matthew Kelly, a few Og Mandino Books, The Monk who Sold his Ferrari, The Alchemist and The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin.

I could probably list a few other popular ones, too.

This is the reason why I asked everyone to name just one. I have so many books lying around that I just can't make up my mind which one to read first.
Seriously, just line them up, throw a dart and whichever one you hit, start there. Just be prepared to read it more than once and study it. When you don't study these books, they go in one ear and out the other with maybe one or two things sticking for a short period of time.

Study these books, don't just read them and you'll get what you're really looking for.

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. All books written since including the secret and most self development books are mere revamps of the all time classic original. God bless Napeoleon Hill.
