Why Is Everyone Always CHASING Security?

One thing I don't get about people is why is everyone looking for security? Why is it that people stay stuck in a job they don't like but feel it's secure enough?

Well here is a fact- There are no safe spots in life...You can't get out of life alive...It kills us all.

So are people truly trying to safely/securely make their way to eventual death? Do they want to die safely lol?

If you are going to die anyway...Why not die rich? Why not take that risk? Why not do that thing you always wanted to do? What do you have to lose anyway? This life will end for all of us some day.

Tony Robbins says that Security is one of the 6 basic human needs. He calls it Certainty but it basically means the same thing.

As a husband and father I like having the security of being able to feed my family and put a roof over their head. If I had no commitments in that regard it would probably be easier just to bet it all on black and take a big risk.

I also think that as human beings we need some kind of routine in our lives. I think it gives a sense of purpose.

  • Because they do not see the whole picture, but only parts of it.

Security does not exist. It is a myth. As long as you are a human being, there is no safety for you. Life can throw us into different situations any time.
We tomorrow can lose , car, house, girlfriend / wife, money ... even life itself.

Security basically means that you will know what will happen. But you can not know what will happen, you just assume. If you know what will happen to you, then you lose the opportunity to change. When you can not change, there is no progress, no practical, positive growth. So security means no progress, no growth, no excitement.

People chase what they cant have,
They are soo distracted by main stream society that tells them what car they should drive, how they should look and which drug to take,
They are living in a bubble,
Its not about dying rich, its about achieving all your goals,
    Luck be with us,

Excellent post, I think you have hit some really good points.

I think there are a couple reasons why many people act this way.

The first reason is conditioning. We are all affected in one way or another by what we see, hear, and the people that we are surrounded by as we grow up. Many many people grow up hearing the mantra of "get good grades, get a good education, get a SAFE and SECURE JOB, save your money, try and buy a reasonable house, invest through your 401k or similar retirement plan, and hope to be able to have enough money to retire after 30, 40 or even 50 years of working. If that is the blueprint we are given for how we should live our life, it will most likely stick with us unless we make a conscious decision to change it, and live our lives differently. It can be very easy to get stuck in the "rat race trap," and settle for what an employer decides to pay us, how many vacation and personal days they decide to let us have, the amount of holiday/christmas bonus we get, and what kind of retirement plan we get.

We are also influenced by the people you hang around and surround yourself with. There are individuals who grow up in a household where there parents or caregivers work during the day, come home, eat and watch TV for the rest of the evening, while repeating that process over and over for years on ond. It can be very easy to be majorly influenced by that type of lifestyle and begin to life it yourself. Whereas, If you surround yourself with winners, and people who are doing things with there lives, it will begin to rub off on you, and you will want to do the same as they are.

Secondly, I believe that our self esteem and self worth can have a large impact on whether we choose to settle for security. If we have a low self esteem and view on our capabilities we will be much less likely to believe we have the ability to create the life of our dreams. Unfortunately people grow up believing that if they don't get good grades in school, they are destined for a life of mediocrity. While grades are very important in many areas, it is not a true determining factor for how you are destined to live your life and how much money you will make. Some people believe that you need some sort of super power to live a life of abundance, or that massive success is only for a few select few. But in reality, we all have special talents that we were given as a gift from above, and we should use them to the best of our ability to create the life that WE WANT FOR OURSELVES, NOT THE LIFE OTHER PEOPLE WANT FOR US.

      I agree good post.

And you have to look at this from a psychological viewpoint also. People's brains are hardwired for short term survival, something that is in our genes right back from the caveman days.

This need for short term survival has created the rat race as we know it and most people feel if they step out of it, that is it, they will perish because they are out in the unknown. The FEAR of straying from the herd into the unknown is whats stopping them.

It has nothing to do with intelligence. Its all instinct.

And people are all different. I have agood friend who is literally very happy to be doing the same dead end 9-5er for the last 7 years. He doesnt like change and so he is okay with the security.

    I am complete opposite!

Interesting topic, it reminds me. I think Seth Godin or Mark Joyner wrote something to the effect of we need to start feeling insecure with security and secure with insecurity.

As was mentioned above. A sense of security is a basic human need. I guess the real question is how do WE define security.

I like Stuart Wilde's perspective on this:

Basically, if you want to make more money, you don't
go looking for more security because "energetically"
making more money requires more activity on your part,
which depletes your energy - and thus you start to
      feel less secure.

So the idea of financial security is a bit of a catch-22
because in order to move towards getting it you have
to put yourself on edge and take risks.

When you're totally secure you aren't motivated to do
anything - and if you don't do anything and the world
passes you by you may find your security disappeared
      while you weren't paying attention.

If you go all-out, all the time, however, always on the
edge and taking risks - you can burn yourself out and
lose perspective on why you're working so hard in the
      first place.

I have worked in security and there is something that every security person knows is that there is never 100% security. There is risk and ways of mitigating that risk. You will never have 100% security (totally risk free) with anything in life.

That being said taking calculated risks is a better way of looking at it. How much risk are you willing to take on. Yes it might bite you but you will learn from it also.

"Security" is what "they" say we should seek from birth.

"Get a secure job, get a pension, and retire at 65" Then you will have what? I'll tell you what "Some" money and "NO" energy to utilize it... Do it now, do it all, make it happen.

Thats how I live my life. Be Extraordinary.

Security is big business. Insurance companies would be eliminated if security were not so important. But you are right, no one is safe.
