Common Mental Barriers

I attended a video training today by Dr. Jim Hennig and found some encouraging words on achieving peak performance.

Average People:
1) Will always think the most common way as the right way
2) Will always think practically and logically
3) Will always follow rules
4) Will always think to err is wrong

Peak Performers will always challenge the 4 things above.

Thomas Watson, the founder of IBM, said, "The way to succeed is to double your failure rate."

Anyone at the verge of giving up their dream after all the failure but hasn't given up and why?

The negative ME: "I won't do it anymore."

The positive ME: "I won't wake up tomorrow if I give up today."

    Very true.

Success is guaranteed if you keep failing.

Just make sure you don't keep failing at the same thing

If something doesn't work for you, try something else.

    Yes. Good message!
Don't forget the importance of the principle: "If it ain't broke... break it!"
It's the only way to get out of the "Average Person" category.

I've never heard of ""The way to succeed is to double your failure rate." but I like it so much....

I am not judged by the number of times I fail, but by the number of times I succeed. And the number of times I succeed Is in direct proportion to the number of times I can fail and keep trying.

A great mindset to have, esp as far as online
marketing is concerned, is to view everything
    as a "marketing experiment".

That way you can never fail.

How can an experiment fail, it was just an
    experiment.

I also like to think of this as "failing your way to success".

Many people are so incredibly afraid of failing at anything that they don't realize they've already failed PERMANENTLY because they didn't even begin to attempt reaching their goals (and probably never will!)

      One of my favourite quotations.

At first I didn't understand it 100%. However, it makes more sense if you truly appreciate that "failure" is something you learn from, and can propel you forward. Essentially, you're doubling your rate of progress.

      See this simple diagram:

      Success 1.0_______/________/___/________Success 3.0

      / =
      Failure/Opportunity/Stepping Stone
Maxwell Maltz (Psycho-Cybernetics) explains it differently, expressing that "failure" is "feedback." He likens the process of succeeding to a torpedo reaching its target by using "feedback" to correct course.

Absolutely, Paulie888. That's another good way of explaining it.

Thank you for the great thread, Swiminsoda.

Good quote. Its very similar to my favourite quote by Michael Jordan

"I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."

My life changed for the better when I heeded the advice of a wise old friend who, years ago, told me:

Love this thread so far... there's some great ideas in here despite being in its infancy.

Another thing worth considering is don't be scared to creep outside your comfort zone because it's the only way you'll grow as a person. It's also the only way you can grow your online business and it's a trait commonly found in many entrepreneurs. They're not scared of taking risks and often see a failure as one of the many stepping stones leading to success.

Do you think average people think like that?

    No way!!!

    Garry.

Wow, you guys hit a nerve with me.... Sometimes when I'm working on a project, I find myself doing anything and everything not to complete it, and just put it up and out there

I try to make everything perfect, and I just don't won't to get anything wrong. So, after awhile I find myself doing nothing. After a day or two, I have to literally force myself to just say the hell with it... Make the damn site live put up a Paypal button on it, and drive some quick traffic and see how it goes.

As a professional coach, the first thing we learn in coaching school is how to help clients overcome what we call GAILs -- Gremlins, Assumptions, Interpretation, Limiting Beliefs. Gremlins are personal mental barriers that always get in the way to moving forward towards a goal which really are just personal fears. Assumptions are mental projections of the past into the present which say that something that happened in the past will always happen again. Interpretations are stories we tell ourselves or the conclusions we draw when something has happened. Limiting beliefs are personal beliefs that we are often taught by our parents, teachers, or any other authoritative figure we grew up with that has made an imprint on our persona. All of these GAILs can be overcome with work and time to become more aware of who we really are!

Yea I've found that out. The more I've failed in life the more I learned. The harder the failure the more important the lesson learned.

Failure is a very important aspect in our lives. With this, it made us the person we are right now. It gives us guidance and a warning not to make the same failure again.

Thanks, I especially like the quote. It's too common for us to give up when the going gets tough. Sometimes there is a time to say it's enough and stop if it's affecting others or other reasons but there are times you have to preserver

There's nothing wrong with being "average." In most aspects of my life, I am average: An average singer, an average writer, an average driver, an average eater.
But in the ways that I am uniquely ME, I find my life's fulfillment and authenticity. And that is anything but average.
I never want to be an average Me.

There's definitely no right and wrong to this. Happiness comes from contentment it does, while there are others who need to be challenged to find happiness.
The speaker referred average as being contented. Some people might need perfection or not do it at all. The question posted was how would you know you're limit if you have never tried before.

Thanks for all the positive posts. It drove me to question my own limits against the odds. It's so easy to lose sight believing in myself. Here's one of the videos presented.
