Why does everyone want to be successful?

Personally, my definition of success is to achieve a high level of freedom so I can experience life to its fullest without having to worry about money or time.

My biggest motivation in life is to be able to see and experience as much beauty of this world as possible and live a life that's fulfilled.

What is success to you? And why do you want to achieve it?

Success to me is simple: I want to be able to spend more time with my son than I spend doing anything else. He is the most important person in my life, and I hate every day that I have to tell him "Daddy has to go to work now".

I agree you with you, Li. Money means freedom. But success is not money-- If you have become a person of character and you have a vision for the future that involves serving others, then you will always be successful no matter how much money you have. It's just that the money makes is sooooo much easier.

There are so many different definitions of success. I think we all each have our own definition. And we are all reaching for success for different reasons.

Some of use want to be able to be home with the family, some want to run the boat, some of us want to make more money.

We are all successful one way or another.

Why would you want to define it any way? To me, it's the Freedom. But you won't fine that out until you make a lot of money. At some point, you will develop your expertise and than you'll learn to focus on that. Thus, you can outsource everything else.

One thing that is clear and logical, when you have a successful business you will connect with people like yourself. That's called the *Universal Mind*. We all are just identical, but it's our belief system that separates us.

Lastly, we essentially fall into two categories, either you are self-employed or you are not!

There's actually 6 areas of "happiness" or "success" that people want...

      ..and that is:

      Health/appearance
      Relationships
      Your occupation or work
      Finances/wealth
      Personal/spiritual Development

I don't have my list in front of me, so I can't remember the rest, but that should give people a head start(they should be right ). (hint: these 6 areas of happiness are also a good place to start a horizontal niche).

Success to me can be summed up in one word (or sentence).

Evolve.. Success to me is to evolve in the 6 areas of happiness that all humans want to feel "complete"

There is no one answer to happiness.. It includes multiple areas and they must be fulfilled- to be at your pinnacle level...

How is having 0 dollars (or negative like most people) considered success?

Just helping people and having good character is far from success.

      Fulfilling? Yes, but successful?

      Think about this...

If you like to serve others (profit or non profit) then do you think you could do more with being wealthy (say like warren buffet donating 25 billion)(or bill gates donating most of his money to charity when he leaves)? Or do you think you could do more by being poor or in debt, like you suggest?

All things being equal- you are way better off having money and freedom than not. For the betterment of yourself, of others, and humanity in general.

Having character, vision, and serving others is the foundation, but the more money you have, the more freedom, the more options, and the more you can share with others!! Don't think of money as paper- money is FREEDOM. How can you be successful, if you don't have freedom or opinions? I may be wrong, but I think most people want freedom and optinons...

Please don't exclude money from happiness, because it keeps a roof over your head and food in your stomach-something that a lot of the world population is dying from... Feel lucky that you have money, a roof over your head, and food in your stomach, because many don't have even the basic necessities in life.

"you will always be successful no matter how much money you have."

Go head and tell this to the starving and dying children in the world. If I were in there position- I would be offended by someone that is rich in comparison saying something so naive.

They would agree, money IS important.. For survival- and happiness...

For me, success means being able to manage my time the way I want to; i.e., not having to think about a 9-5 job, being able to go out on my boat when I want to, and spending a lot of my time with my family.

Money doesn't buy happiness, but we have more choices, more time available in our hands and that, to me, is invaluable. Life is too short, therefore we should do our best to live it the way we want to.

I would think food in the stomach and roof over the head- is PART of happiness, right?

So true. Money doesn't buy happiness, but in today's world, without money nobody can do anything. Money is really the basis for survival.

Having money gives you the possibility to experience so much more of life. Money doesn't buy happiness, but without money there's no chance of happiness altogether.

I have the same view as well. My definition of success is having the freedom to choose and not worry about money.

Having money is only a means towards true success which is freedom. Many have the false perception of having more money created by the environment. But they don't understand what's the meaning behind it. What is the reason of wanting more money?

The true meaning of having more money is so that one can enjoy the freedom that they are entitled since birth as a true human being. Yet many are stuck in the money game, losing the freedom that they are entitled.

My quest for the freedom that is my birthright as a human is what drives me.
I want the expansion of possibility that financial independence provides. I don't like to not be able to do something simply because "there isn't enough money."
Looking for joy and fun along the way keep me going. Experiences that feel like flying where I just go through my day thinking "I am happy as a clam - this is exactly what I always wanted," remind me that the feeling of freedom I seek really is available in any given moment, regardless of how much money I have in the bank at the time.

I believe that success lies in fulfilling your life's purpose. True success has nothing to do with the size of your bank account. No one who knew my grandfather would have said he was anything other than wildly successful, however he never had money to speak of.

Now please, I realize that having enough money to provide for our basic needs of food, housing, and clothes is vital. So don't anyone go off on me about the starving children in Africa. But, me having a billion dollars won't help those children unless I USE that money (meaning I'll no longer have it) to bring relief to them. So, money is an exchange medium. It's only true value is in it being utilized, not kept. You exchange it for a lifestyle.

With all that being said, I choose to live a wealthy and abundant lifestyle and have sufficient riches to give money to anyone I choose, in whatever amount I choose, to make their life better. When I reach that amount of wealth, I will truly be successful in that aspect of my life.

There are several other life areas, such as family, health, spiritual, etc. that have very little (or nothing) to do with money. You can be successful or not in each area, independently.

Very true, but generosity doesn't always mean money - as you said, "True success has nothing to do with the size of your bank account."

The more I have of anything, the more I can give away. The more I give away, the more will come back to me.

You can't give away what you don't have.

Very well said. I agree that some success is measured by money which allows you to give to other as much as you want and it allows you to have the freedom to spend time with your loved ones, travel and see all the splendor this planet has to offer, etc. And as mentioned there are other areas of success, such as health, relationships, etc that can be measured separately.

    Hey Li,

I think you are right on target about success being freedom. That is the only thing that people want money for is to free up their time to do the things they really want to do. But then they get so busy trying to get enough of money to get they use up all there time and give up their freedom. In this since lif is funny. I just don't want the joke to be on me.

So yes I agree. The true success is Freedom

I'm sure that most of you will agree that two of the most successful people in history were Mother Teresa and Mahatma Ghandi, neither of them had two cents to rub together, but their contribution to this world will be remembered for ever.

Those two came to mind instantly, and there are many more examples, now I cannot instantly think of anyone who achieved that level of "success" because they accumulated a lot of money. You could say their abandonment of worldly goods gave them their freedom, there's a lesson!

Wealth does not just happen. It needs plenty of sacrifice and hard work. Look around and see how people behave in different circumstances. Pay attention to how they talk, walk and react to circumstances and other people. Notice also people's reaction to them. The key to self improvement is in knowing who you really are, how you would want to be and what you really want.

As you have known, man's thirst for success is undying. When a competition arises, we quickly fought our way back on top. Making success even more hard to achieve, but for some they are contented even if they achieve a simple goal in the prime of their life. Wanting more means the more challenges ahead. My motivation to be successful is freedom. I would love to wake up in the morning and not have to rush my daughter of to day care and not see her again until 8pm that night. I would love not having to plan my time to pursue my various hobbies around my work schedule. I would love to have the financial freedom to not have to constantly worry about money and bills.

    • Interesting question. Why do we work everyday? Why do I wake up every morning? These are some of the questions that you realize at the end of the day, right before you lay your head on your pillow. Or, when you take - or find - the necessary time to pause.

But why do we do all these things when we can stay at home, be with our families, and just take life as it is? For me, because we know better. We know the difference between what is good or otherwise. We know that each action will lead somewhere. And, because we are given options - choices. And we use it because we want to be better. This is why we want to become successful, in whatever sense we take the word 'success' for.

The ultimate success in my career - which is to gain financial freedom - has still yet to be attained. But, I am enjoying all the little successes toward reaching my career goal.

So, why do I strive for success? - because life's a bore if I just lay around being successful at achieving nothing.

If you're asking why we want to be "successful financially", we all have our very own reasons.

Most people would say the freedom. Money doesn't buy happiness, but a lot of happiness comes from freedom.

Therefore, money = lot of happiness.

Which is why I want to be financially free also.

I must agree with some of the replies that success to be means having more quality time with my wife and children before they leave home. Time is success, when I can choose to work(play) and sleep, eat, relax. THat is what I want.

There are so many people who are "successful" and unhappy, have a lot of problems, etc. I read a study that concluded that earning any amount of money above $50,000 per year in the US does not increase happiness. Once we have your necessities taken care of it's up to each of us to create our happiness. And that is what I would call real success.

Success is simple it's "having good health" without good health we can do very little. It's not money because, the more you have the more you need it's a viscious circle.

Society has brain washed us in to mortgages, loans, new cars, electronics for kids which makes them unhealthy, fast food and the list goes on.....

TV has killed the art of conversation, supermarkets have taken away the opportunity to buy fresh seasonal food..over processed food is unhealthy...

The chances are if you make a truck load of money you will be stressed, over weight and terribly unhealthy..

    It's fun.

Really...it's not rocket science with me. It's just...fun.

It's more than a challenge, it's what I live for. To have fun. Challenged 2nd.

The challenge adds spice to successes. The mistakes motivate to get
    creative.

I don't hate a 9-5 because of the people who I work with. I hate it because
of the boa constriction of creativity to "do as your told".

Most jobs are like this, and humans seek "Creative expression" above all else.

Money comes 2nd to it. Money flows with creativity, ideas, and action on those
creative ideas. It's the physical, tangible reward to ourselves for a job well done.

Success means freedom. Freedom spiritually. Freedom Mentally. Freedom Financially.

    Success Means Freedom

From what I have found over the last 9 years full time in Internet and Network Marketing not everyone does truly want to succeed, its only those with a real ambition who want the most out of life and have a really BIG reason why that keeps them so focused that they dont see any reason not too

For me, Success is defined by two things:

    1. Be happy at the end of each day with the way I have lived that day.

    2. To have enough money and time to do what I want, when I want, with whomever I want, for as long as I want.

    Great question Li,

To me success are these things.

    in the state of being

    Happy
    Healthy
    wealthy
    wise
    rich
    strong
    and free!

In every area of my life and the top areas for me are Relationships with my family and friends, my health and my wealth.

All money does is buy time so it is definitely nice to have enough money to cover your bills every month so that you have "Free-time" to travel and enjoy what is here while we are here.

    Great question!

So I can continue to travel.
