IM on Self Improvement Is Not Working

Would you agree with me that the space for self development in IM is overcrowded and making money is limited. The stuff you see is repeated over and over again. Give me your honest opinion.
How would you differentiate your IM and change the game?

    Hi Keen,

I believe people these days buys more and more self-help material (Books, DVD, audios...). And while it may appear overcrowded, the potential customers are growing each day too.

Something that works for me well is to sell my product as a modern, cool "gadget".

What I mean by a modern gadget is: Make it modern. Try to avoid the use of metaphysical stuff in your sales letter if you can (some people feels uncomfortable with some "new age" labels).
Try to sell it as science products for a better life (if your product allows you to do that, of course).

See, on one hand, a lot of people may say: "I will plan my day on this great, productivity-oriented, organizer!".

On the other hand, other people would say: "I will meditate, then I will visualize and will project my energy towards my goals using the magical power of my mind, and I will use this software to focus more on my goals".

Both groups are doing basically the same, but the 1st group will avoid metaphysical (or too psychological) labels.

There's still a lot of space out there.

    HTH,
    Gaby

    Hi Keen,

I disagree. Markets that are overcrowded and competitive do tend to yield good profits if done correctly. As long as your offer meets a "desperate need" of the market you are marketing to. You would be profitable. After which its then a matter of tweaking your system with upsells/downsells/ continuity programs to maximize profits.

I've taken a look at your product at Powerful Quick Tips For Personal Success , can i presume that thats the product you are not that successful with?

It could possibly be an issue whereby the offer you are giving might be too generic in nature.

But then again there are many other variables, are the numbers you get from driving traffic to the website bad? Is there traffic to the website etc?

All the best with your self improvement products. I'm sure you can make the money opportunities worth your while.

Oh and of course I'm in the self improvement niches too. =)

    Hi,

I agree with the overcrowded issue. Take 'weight loss' for example. 4idiots may be the most popular, but how many people are selling it? CB will not publish conversion rates because they know the numbers...my advice is to find an under served niche, no matter how small, and market to that. You will be amazed at the number of spin off niches that appear. All the best, allenjohn

It's not about whether a specific niche is crowded or not, but more about whether or not the way that you deliver it is in a way which people respond to.

For example, I recently read a post where the OP thought Joe Vitale was amazing and others thought he was a joke.

Yes the majority of self improvement is the same thing, but it is the way in which you express it that will determine whether or not people relate to you and also whether you are targeting the type of people who will relate to your way of communicating.

I think there's always room for new players.

I amaze myself just by reading this and other forums, to see how many new people get online every single day... and most (if not) all of them are looking for an opportunity to make some money, especially the way the economy is right now, every body is desperately looking for additional income. I have read cases when people have jobs and everything but at the same time, they worry they can lose all that any time now.

I think that there is an growing number of people who are becoming more aware or conscious and are seeking information about self improvement. Main stream info like The Secret, A New Earth and Oprah are also instrumental in the growth of this particular niche.

The space for self development in IM is not overcrowded.

A lot of people just don't know that they don't know and so they believe they are gurus when in actual fact they have yet to grasp the roots and foundational principles of success in IM.

Making money opportunities arise every single day. Just look around at the problems people face and therein lie a treasure chest of opportunity, but what are most folks doing? Selling the same "latest product" to the same people who are trying to sell to them!

It's crazy but it's the reality of the IM world as we know it.

Personally I sell a very small selection of select items few people are offering, and when it comes to content, I am even more selective.

I walk the talk and supply limited copies of my personal information products to people on my list ONLY. This is so that they in turn can offer pretty unique and valuable content to their list.

That's how I am going about differentiating my information and internet marketing and changing the game.

Look, it's darn hard work having to come up with new ideas or new perspectives on evergreen ideas however it is possible. You'll be motivated when you realize that the product you're trying to sell (which many others are also trying to sell to you) is available on Ebay or somewhere else for $0.01!

Rant and response over...I feel better now ;-)

While the second half of what you say is true.. If the first half doesn't have money or its too small of a market, then it may not be worth it.

      Thats right Bayo-

Its differentiate or die in this game.

Most people don't realize that is a key missing ingredient. That's one way how you compete in a market thats crowded. You need to be different, have a competitive advantage, USP, you need a strategy.

If you don't have a strategy... Theres someone else out there that does that will probably be taking up more market share then you are.. How else are these "IM Gurus" so successful? They have a plan and strategy in place for there business.. But they'll sell you the quick and easy fix to make money...

When you go in to war or go into business- its best to have a strategy so you don't die

One of the tricks with the self improvement niche is to dig deep and focus on addressing a specific desire or challenge. People don't want self-improvement, they want to look better, be more confident, attract better friends or partners, achieve more success in their career or business, etc...

Often times self-improvement is the way to achieve a certain outcome, but first, you must focus on the outcome and the target market - then delivery the personal improvement information to get there.

Stay too high-level or general in this field and you are dead in the water.

I would modify that to say MOST people. There are quite a few who are indeed looking at and for "self-improvement". My healing clients are proof of that every day.

I also disagree that Self Improvement IM is over-crowded. The trick to this pony, imho, is to create as unique a product or service as you can. Currently, I'm selling a flower essence and essential oil healing/protection spray that does fairly well and it's the only one of it's type on the market. Once I get he traffic coming in in a better targeted flow, the sales will increase.

I'm also working on an ebook/CD series that will combine self improvement/metaphysics with another well known and heavily marketed niche, that noone else anywhere is even talking about this combination, much less selling in.

Global recession has change the requirements for self improvement to a certain extent. Technology improvements have also bring changes to the way self improvements are carried out.
Expert warriors , do you have a different view or perspective?
