Is A Team Really Needed?

Teamwork not only allows a person to do what he couldn't otherwise do; it also has the compounding effect on all he posses- including his talent. If you believe one person is a work of God (which I do with all my heart), then a group of talented people committed to working together is a work of art.

Whatever your vision or desire, teamwork makes the dream work.

Working together with other people toward a common goal is one of the most rewarding experiences of life and having worked with teams of people with former employers and my current business venture, I want to share a few things I've come to realize about teamwork.

1) Teams involve more people, thus affording more resources, ideas, and energy than an individual possesses.

2) Teams maximize a leaders potential and minimize their weaknesses. Strengths and weaknesses are more exposed in individuals.

3) Teams provide multiple perspectives on how to meet a need or reach a goal, thus devising several alternatives for each situation.

4) Teams share the credit for victories and the blame for losses. This fosters genuine humility and authentic community. Individuals take credit and blame alone. This fosters pride and sometimes a sense of failure.

5) Teams keep leaders accountable for the goal. Individuals connected to no one can change the goal without accountability.

6) Teams simply do more than an individual.

It's common sense that people working together can do more than an individual working alone. So why are some people reluctant to engage in teamwork? It can be difficult in the beginning. Teams don't usually come together and develop on their own. They require leadership and cooperation. While it may be more work on the front end, the dividends it pay on the back end are tremendous and well worth the effort.

The true measure of team leadership is not getting people to work. Neither is it getting people to work hard. The true measure of a leader is getting people to work hard together!

Michael Jordan said it best, "There are plenty of teams in every sport that have great players and never win titles. Most of the time, those players aren't willing to sacrifice for the greater good of the team. The funny thing is, in the end, their unwillingness to sacrifice only makes individual goals more difficult to achieve. One thing I believe to the fullest is that if you think and achieve as a team, the individual accolades will take care of themselves. Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships."

After a friend and I started helping each other candidly move our business's forward (we are in the same business in different locations) we have both eliminated all of our business debt and leverage ourselves into a place where we work very little and make a ton more.

We were talking about it Wednesday while we had lunch in the city. We laughed about how effective we became once we opened the gates of 2 peoples minds and resources.

    Good post.

The sum of two brains is not 2, but a lot more. The key is looking for people of the same mindset to work with. Sometimes, you need people to brainstorm with. just what may have seemed a stupid statement sometimes could trigger some powerful thoughts in you mind. Yes, A good team is important. Just make sure you do not get yourself a group of people but a team. Huge difference.

I love that quote from Michael Jordan. Great post and I agree 100%

I have had one consistent partner and many other short terms partners along the way as I have built my business for the past 3 years. It is awesome how each of us has played to our strengths and become very good at our unique talents. By doing so, we get WAY more accomplished than any of is could on our own.

The most challenging part of having a team is establishing leadership and then preventing sensitive money issues (or decisions about money) get in the way of a successful business team. I have been lucky in this regard and the team continues to flourish!

Whether in the workplace or on the court, or even amongst members of a community, effective teamwork can produce incredible results. However, working successfully as a team is not as easy as it may seem. Effective teamwork certainly does not just happen automatically; it takes a great deal of hard work and compromise.

Great point and being a fanatical basketball fan, I can't help but think of the Miami Heat and their coach.......Everyone (the fans and media) had all these great expectations and high goals for almost a perfect season not realizing that even if you have a team of superstars, teamwork still doesn't always happen automatically.....As you say, hard work and comprimise....lots of comprimise is need, especially if you're in a position of developing leaders.

I like teams no doubt and think they're very powerful. But I built up several online businesses without one. So while it's very helpful to stimulate thought and action I don't think it's required.

Perhaps it's more important for some compared to others. For me it's helpful but not necessary.

There are some very interesting comments here on this topic, from so many different members. Ironically, the "vote" based on these comments is about 7 to 2, with seven people in high favor of team-oriented performance. Only two individuals truly mention that success, especially in today's ONLINE world, can be accomplished just as easily and often more effectively, via the single performance approach.

As for me, I have done it both ways, and I perform well with GROUPS, yet also do some of my best work, as well, when operating in a single capacity. No one can argue that "There is strength in numbers," or that "No man is an island."

Yet, the flip sides to these statements also ring true, and that is what goes to make this an interesting topic, as well.

Teamwork, in many ways, is analogous to the concept of marriage, wherein...

It is great and becomes even more magnificent when its members are dedicated, talented, and willing. On the other hand, a bad, mismatched, or ill-intended grouping only serves to make single performance more appealing and productive.

Let us not forget that "successful" team construction is also a matter of blessings, good fortune, or luck. Sometimes in life, try as you might, the most "appropriate" or "best" team members simply do not come along at the right time. In such cases, an individual who is an excellent performer, can do just as well, in single-handed fashion.

Thus, both teamwork and independent performance maintain their bad and good perspectives.

Excellent quote from Jordan. Its seems to be easy enough to make a few hundred dollars a month, but the big paydays require a team effort and patience. Hiring a VA has allowed me to focus on the bigger picture.

No one who's achieved great success as an entrepreneur or internet marketer reached their goals on their own. When you first start out, the budget is tight so you tend to handle everything yourself. Focus on small attainable goals and those fruits will provide the support for bigger projects.

Every successful person I know has a large team working for them, I don't believe for one second that it's coincidence that these people just happen to employ a large team and are all just happen to be millionaires.

Warren Buffett's companies employ 250,000 people, and the guys worth $50bn plus and Berkshire has assets under management of $300bn.
