The Law of Attraction

Does anyone believe in this and practice it?

I am currently reading The Secret and it's extremely compelling. Like most who learn about the law of attraction for the first time, its a lot to wrap my mind around. At times I can see parellels in my life with what is being talked about in the book and really buy in. At other times I think the real secret is that The Secret is actually an incredible marketing case study on creating perceived value for consumers.

I'd love to hear other's thoughts and experiences with this.

It's make-believe, much like heaven and Santa Claus.

No doubt there is some hocus-pocus stuff in there. But the essential message is the same contained in the writings of virtually all great authors on success. Napoleon Hill, Earl Nightingale, Jack Canfield, on and on the list goes.

But then I believe in Heaven too.

Actually, that's exactly what the Law of Attraction teaches...or I should say what good LOA teachers teach Watch or read Abraham, for example.

        Agreed.

Abraham Hicks is awesome, even if he/she/it is a bit "cooky".

One of T. Harv Ecker's famous lines he says everywhere is "what you focus on expands". Which really is much like what LOA teaches. So yes, focus on the solution not the problem.

The week after I watched "The Secret", I got two checks for hundreds of dollars from a COMPLETELY unexpected source. I almost passed out! That was just the start.

"The Secret" is not positive thinking and that's where skeptics get lost.

The movie for me, at the time, was incredibly powerful. But it's kind of a primer. As others have said, there are many other places to dig deeper. When it hasn't worked for me, it's been because of my limiting beliefs, particularly during an emergency.

Can anyone suggest anything other than EFT or NLP for limiting beliefs? For one thing I want, nothing is working.

Exactly. I enjoy T. Harv Ecker's work. I just received the Secrets of the Millionaire Mind. I actually got it on eBay, hardcover in perfect condition signed by the author for $6 with shipping!

I enjoyed the audio version of this book that I had to own the actual copy. Looking forward to reading it.

I will agree on two things mentioned: the secret and santa clause are make believe.

Heaven however, you cannot say is make believe. We as humans are born to thrive spiritually, and if heaven exists to make our lives better then it can't be make believe, but rather one must have a belief in it.

The law of attraction does not exist, and neither does santa clause. However, I am a spiritually strong person and thoroughly believe there is a heaven.

      To the Original Poster:

The secret is what your intuition tells you it is. Do you think positive thinking will manifest reality in your life? Of course not. Life is a balancing act of good and bad, positive thoughts don't "attract" good things, they improve your ability to "create" good things.

The Secret's premise was used to create a high perceived value to a desperate market. The best thing the secret has done is create a curiosity in people to seek more understanding on self improvement, and the worse it has done is led people to believe it really works.

A person will waste their life away believing in this unless they seek out more substantial truth on the subject. Actions create results, not thoughts. Thoughts are what drive our actions to behaviors.

Thoughts cannot be controlled, only influenced. No matter how hard you try, you will think negative thoughts just as much as positive ones, but you can continue to influence yourself to only ACT on the positive thoughts and disregard the negative ones.

That is where the secret gets people hung up... they focus too much on controlling their thoughts, and not enough on action according to the ones that matter.

      Hope that helps

"The Law Of Attraction" is a rebranded counterfeit of the original and genuine "Law Of Believing" which was originally taught by Jesus Christ.

The original works with mathmatical precision, the counterfeit works, but it's less powerful and reliable.

    Just saying........

P.S. Gordon Gekko, aka (I forgot his previous warrior forum name?) is correct in that believing is an action word.

You have to take positive action on what you are believing to accomplish, in order for it to come to pass.

Positive believing is a spiritual law, it's an innate law built into the very fabric of life, and all peoples lives are influenced by it tremendously. Most do not know about it for sure and wonder why some succeed and some do not.

But those who do, and learn to operate it properly will be quite successful, there are no if's ands or buts about it.... it's like gravity, which is a law, its unseen, but it affects the physical realm.

The law of believing affects the physical of the person who operates it correctly in a positive manner.

I think you're a smart guy. With a lot to teach people. And that's cool.

However do you realize you repeatedly attract negative reactions from people? You keep doing it over and over again. You're attracting these "trolls" (or whatever you want to call them) into you life because of your beliefs and communication.

      Just thought you should know.

I think you're 100% correct. It is a frame of reference- a shell around LOTS of other important messages. Everyone here that has given their opinion is correct.

The law of attraction simply suggests the idea of self fulfilling prophecy.

In order to become the type of person that you're trying to attract, you, in a sense, have to become the person that you want to attract.

If you are trying to become a millionaire, you have to think and act like a millionaire. You have to figure out how they think, and think about business the way that they do in order to become like them and make millions. You have to "attract" other millionaires by the way that you behave and PURPOSELY find opportunities where you might "bump into" one of them, or get a chance to befriend them.

If you want to attract good health....you have to physicially and mentally make the steps happen in order to become healthy. Start exercising more, take some vitamins...that sort of thing.

LAW OF ATTRACTION = SELF FULFILLING PROPHECY = FINDING A SOLUTION TO A PROBLEM THAT YOU HAVE AND IMPLEMENTING IT = VIBRATING AT THE SAME WAVELENGTH = TAKING POSITIVE ACTIONS TO ACHIEVE POSITIVE THINGS

It's all the same thing, folks. You're all right. You all just explain the EXACT SAME concept in different words and from different perspectives.

If you think thoughts which make you feel good, then keeping thinking those thoughts. We want to feel good.

Notice, if we are feeling bad, that we have been thinking negative thoughts, so change it to some positive thoughts and we will start to feel better.

I have noticed that when I am in a good mood, often good things turn up for me, so, law of attraction or not, it feels good to feel good!

If you do research on successful people (especially interviews), in any field, you'll start to see the same themes mentioned over and over and over.

This is the essence of books like The Science of Getting Rich, Think and Grow Rich, Laws of Success and others.

It's not a fluke that very successful people have a LOT of traits in common, especially those relating to how they think and perceive the world around them.

So, to answer your question, Yes. Although, I think The Secret has some really hokey stuff in it such as when it tells you to 'Focus on checks coming in the mail and they will magically appear!'. That's just hogwash. But, some of the other ideas it outlines are directly from sources like the ones I mentioned above and I absolutely believe those to be true.

I am currently reading The Secret and it's extremely compelling.
"The Secret" was originally inspired by the book "The Science of Getting Rich" and very much influenced by the current work of Esther Hicks. However, "The Secret" was, by comparison, a superficial, commercial treatment of the ideas contained in Hicks' work. It in no way compares with that of Hicks or the even more advanced treatment offered in the Seth Material, by Jane Roberts.

As others have indicated, many of the concepts are not new and are to be found in the bible, as well as in Buddhism, Taoism, the teachings of Confucius and Hinduism, all of which appeared hundreds of years earlier.

The advantage of Hicks' work has been the clarity and comprehensive treatment of the ideas and less reliance on the use of metaphor. As well, the language is addressing a modern audience, whereas those who taught thousands of years ago had to deliver their teachings in the context of a culture and religion that existed at that time and in those locations.

Heresy was not something to be taken lightly, as the New Testament indicates. Also hundreds of years earlier, in 399 BC, the great moralist, Socrates, was accused, according to his indictment, "...of not worshiping the gods whom the state worships, but introducing new and unfamiliar religious practices; and, further, of corrupting the young."

After a vigorous debate, Socrates was required to drink the poison, hemlock.

So delivering a message which would be understood by the intended audience and also quell the fears of conservative leaders was not an easy task. To a modern audience, that message could easily be misinterpreted and misunderstood as we are not receiving it in the same cultural context.

The work of Abraham-Hicks has done a lot to bridge this gap, whilst acknowledging that many of the ideas have been around for thousands of years. However, those ideas can now be considered in the original language in which they were delivered - modern English.

The relationship between Esther Hicks and her associates (her contribution was edited out of the DVD for copyright reasons and it was re-released) and the producers of 'The Secret' DVD is explained in this video released by Abraham-Hicks, 'The Secret Behind The Secret':

Abraham-Hicks: The Secret Behind “The Secret”

The good thing about the Secret is that it opens you up to another side of this reality. However, the LOA doesn't work every time for everyone.

No LOA practitioner can tell me that they always get what they want even if they follow the instructions to the letter. They'll pretend like the LOA always work for them or that it failed them because they didn't believe in it enough. Others will say that they didn't get what they wished for because their wishes weren't in alignment with their true self, and I tend to agree with them.

If you want to get what you REALLY want from life, you should focus on finding your true path first. Trust the universe and embark on a journey. Follow your passion and live it every second of every day. Passion is like a compass guiding you towards the path to your true self; follow it and you'll get to where you're trying to go, but ignore it and you'll certainly get lost...

Follow your intuition and when you get a sudden impulse to do something, don't second guess it and go for it, as long as it's honorable. Life will bring the right people into your journey to help you achieve your goals and you'll start to live a more fulfilling and enjoyable life. Does it mean that you'll get the 300 000$ Mercedes Benz? No. Does it mean that you'll get the million dollar mansion? No. But I guarantee you that if you follow your passion each and every day until your last, you'll live a more peaceful and fulfilling life...

I've watched the secret and I have the audio book and I absolutely do believe in it. It's really all bible based so if you know your bible then you will see the same practices that they teach in the book.

I can say that since I have been using 'the secret' my life has changed for the better even when it comes to Internet Marketing! What you think about you bring about and the same goes for your business. If you think your business will fail, it will, if you think it'll be successfull, believe it and act as though it has already happened you'll start attracting things in your life to make it come to pass.

You don't know me, but the people who know me personally have seen proof of what having such faith can do. So with that said, good luck on your journey to a more fulfilling life with 'the secret'

You are pretty convinced in the power of the Law of Attraction. I'm open minded to the idea that there might be information I don't know about regarding the law. Would you care to explain your position as to how it works in your own words?

I will admit, it has been a long time since I have read the Secret, and it doesn't give the whole story as you've indicated. Tell me then, what is the whole story? Contrary to how you may think about me, I am much more open minded than I've recently shown myself to be.

Although others above have made a passing reference to negative thinking, its true significance in hindering our progress needs to be considered. A positive mental attitude will move us in the direction we wish to go, but it is also true we can be anchored by unhelpful thoughts that are difficult to shake off, delaying or preventing us from doing as well as we would like.

Much has been written about the need to think positively - Think and Grow Rich, Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude - for example. However, it is often not appreciated that how to deal with negative thinking - how to let it go - is of crucial importance.

The significance of the negative feelings which flow from negative thinking has been long understood as a destructive force. Anger and resentment, fear and anxiety, depression, jealousy, hatred, and others can bring about havoc in our lives. Just look at all the revenge-themed movies. A whole genre has developed justifying vengeful retaliation (think Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson, and many more, not to mention the lyrics of many popular songs).

The need to get beyond those feelings to be able to release positivity in our lives has long been understood and yet is often glossed over. The continuing need to cope with negativity needs to be appreciated. For instance, the parable of the Prodigal Son (a son demands his inheritance and duly spends it until he is left impoverished and forced to return home. Instead of casting him out as undeserving, the father forgives him) and the Lord's Prayer ('...as we forgive those who trespass against us') indicate that, even 2,000 years ago, forgiving those who've wronged us is a better way to live than by harboring resentment and burdening ourselves with grudges.

You will not be punished for your anger; you will be punished by your anger. - Buddha

Yet it can be easier said than done. People will cling to negative thoughts and justify them to the death. Just think of the bitter divorces where a wronged spouse vindictively tries to hurt a cheating partner - carrying past misery into the future!

In the modern day, a number of courses have developed which pay special attention to dealing with negativity. One such is A Course of Miracles, which famously deals with Forgiveness as part of its instruction. With Abraham-Hicks, Esther and Jerry Hicks spend much of the year traveling and conducting seminars entitled 'The Art of Allowing'. A lot of the material consists of showing how we resist aspects of our lives and how we can allow the better life we want to emerge by recognizing (and releasing) negative thoughts and by not resisting those things we cannot change.

Positive thinking is, in many respects, the easy part. For instance, if we are lonely and friendless, we are aware that having good friends can ease those feelings. Likewise, if we are impoverished, we don't need a CPA to tell us that possessing more money will help.

Yet our focus on the life we want is greatly affected by our preoccupation with other matters, including fears, doubts, anger, sadness, etc. We allow those feelings to direct and even dominate our lives.

If, however, we were unhindered by negative thinking - free from thoughts and feelings which were counter-productive - our true desires and potential could be freely expressed.

Putting the Law of Attraction into effect is not just about positive thinking. It is also about letting go and allowing what is to be, freeing us to move on.

The greatest amount of confusion (and argument) around the whole law of attraction subject has to be about whether action is required.

I would say that it is best to assume that action is always required (play safe). At least... by taking action, which mostly involves interacting with others, you are increasing the chances of manifestation (achieving your goals). It is important to close the range between yourself and whatever it is that you want.

In the same way that just thinking about something doesn't guarantee it's manifestation, the same can be said for just doing hard work. You need a multitude of different ingredients to bake this cake.

      Prep. Dissolve your self-limiting beliefs
      1. Thought (focus on what you want)
      2. Emotion (this can be achieved by Visualizing)
      3. Belief (assume that it will come)
      4. Action (Interact with others)

However, there is more to the above process. If you have limiting beliefs about yourself, you won't have the correct foundation in order to get the process working for you. So, you have to correct this first. This can be achieved using various methods, such as EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming).

Also, it is good to think of other people as "Sacred" (like yourself). This way, you are able see through the myth of "constant" competition. This will arm you with an attitude that will better enable you to "Add Value".

Motivational speaker T. Harv Eker explains to those who attend his various workshops that instead of trying to sell to people, it is better to find new ways to help them.

      Forgotten Teachers
One of the first modern teachers of what we now call the law of attraction, has to be Neville Goddard, who lived in the early Twentieth Century. In fact, his teachings are still considered by many, to be the most powerful, even today.

      The Power of Intention
As for mind power alone, there is actually some evidence suggesting that we can influence things outside of our physical bodies. In the documentary "What the bleep" trained meditators changed the ph level of a container of water by 1.0. This effectively changed the water from Drinkable to Poison. They did this without touching it!

These threads are going to continue forever until everyone can agree on what the definition of LoA is.

The 'no' camp seem to think that it means thinking positively about something will bring it to you. That's only part of it.
The 'yes' camp realise that you also need to take physical steps (action) toward your goal, and that is an integral part of the LoA. No-one who understands the LoA will tell you that action is not required.

Once the 'no' camp realise this, these threads will become redundant.

Like I said in my post... The Secret movie/book itself is just a kindergarden class into LOA. It's enough to peak the interest of those who have never seen or heard of it before and, hopefully, get them to learn more and do more.

So with any introduction into a new concept you will have a debate and opposing thoughts and views. This applies to anything... if someone posted the concept of transmission of voice and data wirelessly through the air before this was commonplace you'd have the same arguments with some saying it's possible and others saying it's not, yet I'm doing it right now. :-)

The Secret is both very good and just junk.. I like the secret but most people misunderstand it.

I like to think of the secret as the kindergarden class of the law of attraction. It just gives you a taste but not enough to be actually that useful.

So for those who have never heard of it, or gave it a name, it is wonderful. If the secret affected just one person to take control of their life and do more with it. To finally stop blamming the world for where they are in life and actually do something themselves to make a better life, then I say the Secret did it's job.

The Secret created an entertaining basic look at "getting off your ass and doing something which in turn others will see and will be attracted to you because they are seeing you're doing something with your life and not just being a lazy bum".

For that, I think the Secret it great. I own the book and the DVD. They are a part of my collection. Even though I enjoy the work of Napoleon Hill 1000 times better the Secret is what it is and I'm happy it was created.

About a year ago I came across another video that consider to be my favorite. I have watched this video a dozen times. I don't know if anywhere has heard of it... It's called "The Yes Movie". I don't want to post a link to it because it's not free, but a quick Google search will bring it up. I found The Yes Movie to be amazing. So insightful into some of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world! Loved it.
