What exactly are these books about? Are they marketing strategies, dealing with finances, mindset, etc?

They're good "mindset" books for both success and finances.

Rich Dad, Poor Dad - It's a book primarily designed to change your way of thinking, so I would class it as a "mindset' book, although you can find marketing strategies and financial literacy in that book.

Think and Grow Rich - It's about knowing what you want and going after it.

I haven't actually read "The richest man in Babylon", although it is in my to-read list. I am currently reading the 'The 4-hour Workweek', which I also recommend.

I agree - and I'd like to add one more. Three Feet From Gold - it's based on Napoleon Hill's work with Think and Grow Rich. Think and Grow Rich really helped me and influenced how I approached my own book.

"Think and grow rich" has changed the way I think and my personality; in fact it has changed my whole perception of life. Apply those principles to your business and you will succeed.
One thing that is missing that Hill will tell you: If you are personable you will go a long way as everyone will relate to you and you will never miss an opportunity; if you are arrogant, flippant or boastful people will turn their cheek. You may think this has nothing to do with the internet but if you want to be the biggest you will have to meet people one day.
A little quote: “Personality goes a long way.”
My quote: “Think off-line flip it and put on-line.”

Great point there. The Internet is a new medium and it's clearly not factored into Think Rich but still, the joining of forces i.e the mastermind principle is no doubt done most effictively in person, even if the bulk of a persons work involves sitting infront of a computer screen.

      Are you serious?

I thought that was one of the worst books I've ever read. Not just about finances, but in any category. I thought it was nohthing but New Age hokum. I'm curious as to what you found in the book that was helpful. Not trying to start an argument or be a smart aleck; I'm genuinely curious.

      I agree with this addition.

This book has motivated me more than any recent book I read.

I liked Rich Dad Poor dad too but the 4 hour work week put the fire under my feet to get there. (and it puts it together in actionable steps.)

I already work from home so making the leap to outsourcing my business model wont be as difficult.

if you havent read it and you are serious about having a great lifestyle you definitely should get this book.

If I may add a couple: "The Science of Getting Rich" by Wallace D. Wattles, and "The Greatest Salesman in the World" by Og Mandino.

You can download the former from Official Web Site of The Secret and The Power. (It was Rhonda Byrnes motivation behind "The Secret".) Not sure if you can get all of the latter online, but you can get the main substance when you Google "Og Mandino Scrolls". You'll be missing the enchanting story around the scrolls if you go that route though.

      Good choice of books.

I'd also like to add the Book of Proverbs. If you'll study and read closely you'll discover all 14 principles of Think and Grow Rich is contained in the Book of Proverbs (written 5,000 years earlier).

Not surprising because it was written by King Solomon the Richest man in the history of the world.

He was so rich the Queen of Sheba, histories first woman billionaire, fainted at the sight of his vast wealth. See 2 Chronicles 9:1-8

This might be out of left field but I found "The Fountainhead" by Ayn Rand to be a life-changing book.

It's a brick of a book (700 or so pages) and many of the things I "learned" from this book are very subtle and continue to hit me from time to time. The main thing I feel the book portrays is the sense of going after what you want, regardless of the obstacles and common wisdom of the times.

Worth it to read, but I only recommend to those high volume readers among us.

The Brian Tracy book is especially good because it's not just about wealth creation but has great advice on health and relationships as well to make it a very balanced resource.

  • I would like to Ad that you should also read Og Mandino's Success University. It is basically 50 books, condensed into one. It has sections from Think & Grow Rich, and a lot of other success books. I have read a lot of them, and this ONE book pretty much summs them all up. Nothing like it! The book is divided by "semesters" and eventhough its a thick book, keep in mind, that it took the best sections of 50 other books to make each lesson. Good read, would recommend. Also if you haven't read Og Mandino's The Greatest Salesman in the World is Amazing!! You will be a different person at the end of the book.

I really like and recommend The 4-Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferriss, although my lifestyle is still very far from the title of the book, it made me ask the hard questions about myself and eliminated a lot of my routines especially watching/reading the news.

I was also immersed on the books written by Napoleon Hill especially his Think and Grow Rich, truly classical and foundational even to this modern times.

Two books I would highly recommend to anyone who desires to attain success are -
    • the original version of "Psycho-cybernetics" by Dr. Maxwell Maltz, and
    • "The Power of the Subconscious Mind" by Dr. Joseph Murphy.
Both of these books are essential reading, and belong in every warriors professional library.

Each of these works provide very clear and easy to understand explanations of how the mind works, how to steer the mind to attain any goal you desire, and make it clear why it's so important to stay focused on the outcome that is desired. They also make it very clear why it's so important not to get sidetracked by doubts, worries, and fears which are caused by looking at, focusing on, and anticipating outcomes which are not desired.

    Enjoy...!

I have read 2 of these books Think & Grow Rich and Rich Dad poor Dad, they totally help me change my way of thinking, I even have a small copy Rich Dad Poor Dad in my car so when I stop in traffic or sitting outside the shops when my other half is shopping, I always pick it up and flick through the pages. It also helps keep me on track.

I must read The richest man in Babylon, can anyone tell me is it worth the read?

Think and Grow Rich has had the biggest impact on my life. It helped me have the courage to start my own business and taught me how to focus and generate new ideas. My paperback that I bought 9 years ago is simply falling apart.

I also read Rich Dad Poor Dad, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. I know a lot of people who love the book and benefited from it but it did not work with my own "belief system" I guess.

For basic personal finance management, I would suggest Robert Kiyosaki books (e.g. Rich Dad, Poor Dad). For management practices, John Maxwell is the king! Following their principles helped me bring more value to my life.

I've read all 3 of these books and they are very good. Personally I'd replace "Think and Grow Rich" with his more detailed work "Law of Success"

Great suggestions! Several of these books helped me literally change my life. "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" is the book that really started me towards taking control. The concepts in the book are nothing that we haven't heard before, but Kiyosaki found a way to make them really resonate and sink in. (If you haven't read it yet, try his 2nd book "CashFlow Quadrant" instead...you'll get everything in RD,PD with slightly more detail).

"The Four Hour Work Week" was even more influential for me and really made me unemployable. This is what pushed me into pursuing Internet Marketing.

A couple other books I would highly recommend for anyone: "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand and "Getting Things Done" by David Allen. Both books are truly revolutionary, albeit in different ways.

Have read "Rich Dad Poor Dad" and "Think and Grow Rich." I am looking for "The Richest Man in Babylon" right now. Very excited to read it. Of all 3 books, perhaps the one which had the most impact was "Rich Dad Poor Dad".

    Hi owoadephilip.

One of the most important books is missing here though, in my opinion:

"Prometheus Rising", by Robert Anton Wilson.

This book by one of this centuries greatest quantumphysicists, goes through the evolution of the mind, and gives you a breathtaking knowledge of the way the brain works, and how you can take control!
After reading this book, you probable will have learned A LOT about yourself, as well as of the human kind.
So with that book as a foundation, all other selfhelpbooks (including the ones you mention), is much better understood, when the underlying processes is understood fully)

You can see it here: Robert Anton Wilson - Prometheus Rising

Books I would recommend that actually can be used in real life business are Seth Godin's Purple Cow. Farris' 4 hour work week. Amazing info there with actual resources you can use in a business.

3rd one hmmm have to think on it. So many others are good but not GREAT like the 2 above.

I've read Think & Grow Rich and it really changed my perspective on money and what it means to me. Basically, you can let money control you or you can control the money you have and make it grow.

I tried reading Rich Dad, Poor Dad, but I think I was in a different place in my life. I remember feeling like it was for people that already had money, but I should give it a chance now that my perspective has changed.

    Great suggestions!

While this book isn't necessarily geared towards making money, I've been reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and it's an amazing book. Old, I know, but the principals taught in it are timeless.

I have the think and grow rich book which is very good but my all time favorite book is by a woman named Heidi Grant Halvorson. The name of the book is called "Succeed: How We Can Reach Our Goals" It got a perfect score on amazon, it got 5 out of 5 stars on amazon by 16 people. Heidi went to Harvard I believe and she put all of her expertise and knowledge into this book which was just phenomenal. I highly suggest that anyone who is considering to take their business to the next level should definitely check out that book. It's done wonders for me.
